Darth Eggplant
I guess this can mainly be a thread for the upcoming movie. I wanted to talk about cats today. And I want to ask UK forum members a question, but before I ask my question, some useless trivia to pass a few cyber seconds. Did you know that the word 'cat' is actually a modern day variation of the latin word catus? yes in ancient rome, the roman word for these fuzzy creatures was catus (ask a latin major for singular and plural and tense phrasing) even more cat trivia, in ancient Egypt, the word for cat was mew. yes just like it sounds, those clever ancient egyptians, don't mince words, the creatures make a mewing sound so that's what they called them. so if and when you ever or have ever made a mew noise to imitate or get the attention of a cat, you have been perpetuating arcane knowledge and ancient wisdoms without even knowing it. now a question I have for UK forum members this question is based on something I read, was it a type error, or maybe it's a brit thing. the ancient egyptians called cats mew, and we make mewing noises but we also say the word (or at least here in North America) we say the word meow. as in another name for the sound a cat makes, but I saw in a book with a famous UK author the word 'miaow' was this a type O, or is meow (american) and miaow (brittish) and lastly since the movie is coming out I have this to say. I am very frightened, and can not go. Mike Myers is very scary. even Jim Carey as the Grinch was cuddlier. (and better cast) Mike Myers has two major flaws for the role. (A) he is just plain NOT FUNNY, I mean they might as well have gotten Jerry Lewis to do the part if comedic standards in this production are so low. I have seen a trailer or two and have caught Mike myers tiredly using both Docotr Evil's voice and Fat Bastards. wow some originality there, way to go Mike. and the second flaw is (B) he is too short, and the make up is hideous. the cat in the hat in the books is tall. a tall person should have gotten the role, someone with long limbs and the comedic prescense of a giraffe. the actor who plays Kramer on Seinfeld. or either brothers from everybody loves raymond. ray is better suited. or ryan styles from the drew carey show, any tall, lanky comedian, not a fat puddgy cat. and again the make up. Gollum and the Teletubbies are cuter and sexier than this cat in the hat cinematic creation. mo Mike Myers has ruined the experience for me. now the goldfish is cool, and thing one and thing two look just like from the book, but then they go and stick a small yappy dog in their. there was no dog in the story why do hollywood hacks always have to add something? (like the gratuitious and stupid ring which Aragorn wears in the LOTR trilogy) that bugs me to no end, it detracts from the importance of the one ring and frodo's journey and the three Elven rings in peril because of the one) and here is Viggo wearing it cause some dinkus prop person designed it. same goes for Arwens filigree puke piece of jewelry she gace Aragorn. man if iI was Aragorn I would have chucked it a long time ago. he is suppose to have a cool green elf stone, not some peuter\silver babble. anyhow I digress. yes I am deeply afraid of the movie cat in the hat; especially since it has not even come to theaters or just is; and they have already signed the contract for a sequel. another thing i dislike; smug cocky hollywood hacks trying to force feed you something whether you like it or not. and the last tirade since this is a cat\hat\and other post; another grand hollywood venture into the realm of done that, seen that, there is a new Ben Stiller movie coming out, it is called Along Came Molly (staring ben and Rachel from friends) this is Something about Mary all over again. Ben is a likeable loser with a crush\love on for someone so he gets involved with them, and whacky\romantic hijinks are sure to follow. oh yes add dumb pet tricks along the way. mary has that dog, or her room mate did, Molly has a blind Ferret. anyhow, that is your cat trivia\movie review for today. Swoosh
Wow....ehhhh... I think Mike Myers can be very funny, but I agree that this isn't the right role for him. He had funny skits on SNL and the Wanye's Worlds were funny, but a lot of his other work is annoying. That's where this one falls in. To me he sounds like a nasally Rosie ODonnell as the cat...and his jokes are pretty lame. I haven't seen the movie...just seen a bunch of clips, but that's the vibe I'm picking up. And here's everyone's favorite kitty... Swoosh

BongoBob
It's been getting really bad reviews. And the one thing I heard that turns me off the most about this movie, is that the cat in the book was just funny. But this cat is just plain mean. He destroys the house, for gods sake. wtf? Neverhoodian
I don't see how they could make a Cat in the Hat movie funny. The book pulls it off marvelously because the illustrations are cartoons. Besides, the Cat in the book has an old circus master charm to him. He's a lovable guy. (tomcat? ) Its obvious he wants to have some fun, but he makes a mess in the process. Besides, he cleans up afterwards, saving the kids from what would have been a nasty punishment by their mother. There's no way to convey the same feeling in a movie. Real actors simply cannot convey the same emotions and feelings that the book's characters do. Instead, the Cat will come across as selfish, callous, and overbearing. Also, how are they going to take a relatively short story and turn it into a full length movie? Simple: add gobs of new scenes that were never in the book, aren't relevant to the story, cheapen the feel, and rob the story of its vitality. I was not impressed with The Grinch as I knew I wouldn't be, (if a friend hadn't insisted on showing it to me, I would never have watched such lowbrow tripe) and I know Cat in the Hat will be just as horrid, if not worse. I'll wait for the Return of the King for a quality movie and stick to watching Chuck Jones' cartoon of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas to make Dr. Seuss' legacy come alive instead of defiling it.
