But are you willing to spend your money (or your parents) every year to buy all the latest new game systems?

erm? But that is how the whole thing works. If it didn't we would all be playing tank on atari home entertainment systems. I actually didn't realise how BIG the original GBs were until i saw one in a shop last week, they are about twice the size of the GB colour and 3 times the size of the SP.

I think it might be a close thing between the DS and the PSP, but (assuming nintendo doesn't do their usual thing and manage to mess up a sure winner) i think the DS might edge it.

Graphics:

PSP has better 3d graphics, but having a GP32 which can play doom and a few other 3d parts I can tell you that there is a limit to how much difference extra 3d detail makes on a tiny screen. The N-Gage showed this as well, it had far better 3d graphics than the GBA, but most 3d games just don't work well on a small screen.

Games:

I'm sure Sony will line up a huge set of developers, and they do have a big catalogue of PS/PS2 games to convert... but the DS can play GB, GBC anf GBA games out of the box, which gives it a big head start, especially among the huge number of GB owners who already have collections of games. Of course Nintendo also have a quite cool back-catalogue of games to convert.. Imagine Ocarina DS or Goldeneye DS.

Control:

Not sure which will win here... playing fps games witht he stylus sounds like it might work, thought he PSP has an analogue stick that might be an improvement. I'm just a little worried Nintendo will only use the stylus/touchscreen for cute gimicky paint type games.

Media:

Still don't know much about the storage capabilities... but although the movie playing capabilities of the PSP sound cool, i'm not sure how they will work.

It definately can't play dvds. I assume the mini-disk format it uses won't take over from dvds...

does that mean you are going to have to buy films on the mini-disks, meaning you can only watch them on your PSP? I can't see many people doing that if they are over a few pounds each.

Albums might have the same problem, I can't see sony letting you copy them or create your own mini-disks, so are you going to be limitied to buying albums you can only listen to on your PSP??

I can already rip films and tv onto my gp32, and the fact i can make my own films makes it much more flexible (if worse quality) than the PSP. However there is (honestly) a limit to how often you can use it. Really long flights is about the only time you might get to watch a film, and even then it can be tricky if you are flying with someone else. (and a lot of airlines now have many movie channels to choose from anyway).

Don't know anything about the new DS storage format, so i don't know what it's capabilities might be in this area.

Wireless:

Probably both be fairly similar, but the fact that up to 16 people in one place can wirelessly play of one cartridge makes the DS look very tempting. Might be able to do the same with the PSP tho...

PocketPC:

It'll be interesting to see what the DS can do with it's stylus, wifi, bluetooth and a mobile in terms of maybe web browsing, personal organising, instant messaging etc... but like the PSP movie stuff it might turn out to be a big gimmick no-one uses.

----

Whichever comes out first might have a huge advantage, or whichever is cheapest. On what we know at the moment i would probably go for the DS, but who knows.

Nintendo definately need to stop this rubbish "third pillar" bit though as it will just confuse everyone. THey need to use the gameboy name (for brand recognition, and to emphasise it plays gb games) and just do like they did with the GBA/GBA sp and have them run in parallel for a while, with 2d games being released on the old format so they can be used in both and 3d stuff released on the new format.

On the other hand, i think nintendo's next console will probably be their last, as XBOX2 and PS3 are looking like they wil be so much more than just game consoles.

I think DS is good competition vs PSP, its not about gfx, but the target market

many are familiar with the gameboys, and the younger com. will most likely stick to DS. The advanced gamers for which the superior in graphics, but more expensive PSP is targeted, well...Think of it. On what do most advanced gamers play. Yes thats right, PC. I didnt buy an xbox or PS2 but a gamecube cause i wanted a console to chill in the couch and play together with friends, and i could play all the games for the xbox/PS2 on my pc. NGC has unique content, and damn fun.

Right now, PSP has no plans for wi-fi.

Also, right now the press HAS CONFIRMED that Metroid: Hunters uses the dpad OR the abxy keys for movement, and the touchpad/stylus for firing/aiming/weapons/morphball.

Cute gimmicky paint games my ass.

Now I'm really itching to try.

In terms of communication, the PSP will come equipped with 802.11-standard LAN, IrDA, and USB 2.0. 802.11-standard LAN is a wireless LAN specification that can communicate in a 100-meter range with a transfer rate of up to 2mbps, and IrDA is a standard for infrared wireless communication.

I love my GBA SP, it serves me well on plane trips and as a nightcap, mainly because of its size. Somewhere Rhett said the DS looks like a tonka toy, I heartily agree. I feel sorry for nintendo sometimes, they just make some strange decisions and end up wondering why there sales flag outside japan....

The psp looks droolworthy for me, if they can come up with a few cool titles, like :

Final Fantasy series

EA soccer, golf series

Dynasty Warriors series

then i'll be sold, I'll just wait a while til the prices drop, and also as Id place more priority on getting a PS3 first....
