You also make a common mistake of having the links appear the same as normal text. Try to make them distinguishable. Tone down the background graphics in the areas where text is displayed. And Alien, at a guess, I'd say your running your computer at a resolution of 1280X1024, which is probably why it's only taking up a small portion of your screen (as appose to my 800X600 where it takes up a much larger portion, although still no more than half) but I do agree, if your gonna make a website, just do the normal version, no one likes the restriction your pop version gives, with no buttons and so on, it offers nothing else than creating a new annoying window which most people don't like. If you were German, Isak, I'd advise to go to SelfHTML, read some of the articles (dos and don'ts) and hand-code the pages (with TextPad). Whoa, you're not exactly right, Thrik, but I wouldn't have expected that so many people use lo-res. Guess there's still a lot of people like the ones in my company who go like "with that setting I can't read anything". Thrik Posted July 14, 2004 Share Posted July 14, 2004 Yeah, the statistics aren't totally right because obviously there's no way to get a tolly of the entire internet's resolution, but most show that more people use 800x600 than quite a lot of designers think. It's quite a shame really, because it really is a very restrictive resolution to design websites for in many cases - particularly hub websites. Anyway, for some interesting statistics for the designers among us, check these out. As I said above, they don't cover the entire internet but they get a very high volume of traffic, as well as averaging their statistics with other large websites - so they are a pretty good benchmark to use if you're a web designer. For example, until that 800x600 percentage drops quite considerably, we shouldn't cut them out of the loop. Just like designers should ensure that their website functions correctly on all browsers, since IE is slowly but surely losing its dominance. Joshi Posted July 14, 2004 Share Posted July 14, 2004 The computer I use for the internet (mainly) is 800X600 because both my parents have bad eyesight, and rather than change glasses all the time, they'd rather the text and icons be bigger (and their computers too slow). I know this is actually possible with higher resolution screens, but I don't see the point considering I use my laptop for almost everything else I do, which does have a higher resolution (and is much faster, and it's mine, not my parents). Just to note, these forums (mi forums) look a lot better in 800X600, as the top graphic and the borders actually, almost, reach the edge of the screen and plus, a lot of toher websites take more advantage of lower resolution screens that higher because of the statistics (it's all statistics these days, why else was Sam n Max 2 cancelled (apart from LA being dumbasses)). Oh, and Isak seems to have fixed the visibility thing where I couldn't see the text without highlighting it. Once you're used to higher resolutions, all of the text and icons and everything just look unbearably large and blocky. I like a bit of gap between the edges of the screen anyway, heh. It had slipped my mind that some people use 1240xbla bla... but im trying to find a solution for this... allthough i still reccomend people to use 800x600 or 1024x768, because all dudes i know uses it. and there was a reesaerch a magazine called internet world (swedish) did, all over the world. and their question to surfers was: what resolution do you use...? most ppl answered: 800x600... but that was a year ago, maybe things have changed. anyways, I dont use 1240 because i cant see the text:rolleyes: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If it was just a normal page, the text wouldn't wrap as much and there'd be a lot less scrolling. Trying to read a large chunk of text ontop of an image is totally not nice on the eyes, less so when the image is fairly bright as it is. The double-navigation is sort of annoying, having to click the top thing and then the side thing as well. Having both on the side would be much nicer, with it opening up like a folder tree view. The main "introductory" page is pointless. It's not quite as bad as a flash intro, but it's on the same sort of level. The "pop" link is also pointless. Why would anyone want the site in a popup window? So they can view the site in tiny-form and the pointless intro page at the same time? Make the design a lot more simple. Simplicity is beauty. I want to find out something about Broken Sword, and I want it now. I don't want to possibly find some information buried within a bloody art display. Other that that, the page is fine. It could just be me, but we seem to have a problem with the drop down menus in Firefox, as shown below I grudgingly tested the site in IE and it seemed to work well, putting a nice background colour behind the text for the popup menu. I have a feeling it might have something to do with some plugin I have for my Firefox browser (I have enough) so we'll have to wait till someone else tests it in Firefox. Generally though, it's a great site. Well done!
