Stingray
that's a hard question, especially the one about what's the best thing to do. Good I guess one of the best things you can do, is paying attention to what other ppl say/chat For instance, when you are the last man alive, yet you don't have any spawnpoints left (places where you and your teammates spawn when they died), you might not know you are the last one. usually, your teammates that are dead and cannot respawn, will let you know you are the last man standing, and urge you to sneak and get a spawnpoint so that every1 can spawn again. Another good thing to do is keeping your teammates in mind, meaning that you shouldn't be selfish. Example: you are in an airplane and ready to take off. Yet, there is another teammate nearby that clearly wants to join you in your plane. Wait or him, instead of ignoring him and take off. This way, you two can be a more effective weapon, and it saves you both a walk Bad! A bad thing to do is teamkilling. Don't ever teamkill! It happens that players are dying to pilot a vehicle, but some1 is getting to the vehicle sooner than them. When they see that, they sometimes start shooting at eachother, just for being in the vehicle first. This proves great selfishness and well... you'll be able to understand that teamkilling is bad I might have been a bit unclear to you. Don't hasistate to ask me or some1 else to clearify this to you. And I'm sure other ppl will have many more tips for you on what you shouldn't and should do.
MaximumMayhem
Elaborating on Stingray's first pointer: Communication To put this in the form of one of those 'inspirational posters', imagine; if you will, a photo of a warzone. A Clone Trooper in the rear of the shot is pointing at a lone Battle Droid and calling for another Clone Trooper who can be seen kneeling closer to the camera and in the process of launching a PLEX-1 missile at it. The text underneath states: The Key To Your Team Dominating The Field Because this is exactly what kind of positive effect rigorous communication will have on your game. Informing your team mates of which nodes you plan to take and vice versa, relaying what kind of enemy threats there are in any particular area, and executing group attacks are all the more easier and efficient, thanks to the ingame voice feature. It may feel or seem strange at first, but you'll soon be calling the location of enemy tangos in no time! One thing's for sure; when it comes to 'this type of online game', you're definately in for a lot of enjoyment. Regards - Steve

PBF
Cheers all for the above answers. I'll definitely be seeking out players who have no tolerance for teamkilling. Do you think there'll be an option to prevent that? I believe MoH RS has it.
Tyler_Durden
Best thing is if you have a commander to follow orders, it sucks if your commanding officer has to say please in order for you to follow him to capture the base. Although it's really kind of funny too. Talk about lack of discipline within the ranks. When i think about it, though, when playing battlefield 1942/vietnam, guys will capture the base, then just go onto the next uncaptured base, with or without orders. I can't tell you how many times i or my team mate called in for a pickup behind enemy lines only to not have anyone show up and i would have to sneak past the enemy. So there's a lot of guys who don't follow orders and just kind of do their own thing but it's still fun even with the lack of organization. Also, about teamkilling, some servers had it on but others didn't. Personally i wouldn't turn team killing on because constantly kicking guys off gets old fast when you're trying to win a game gets lame real fast. THE BADGER:
Some games you can toggle it on and off if you host your own game. But most public rooms are default friendly fire. Some times teamkills happen by mistake, but never purposely teamkill.
Stingray
Oh, I forgot about a good one: I, myself, personally, find it good thing to join a clan IF you have a reasonable internet connection. The clan can teach you much, but the best part of being in the clan is playing the best game ever with guys that overtime will become your 'friends'. Being in a clan adds so much more fun to a multiplayer game. Note: this is only my personal opinion and i'm sure other will disagree or find it not neccasary to join a clan. Also: best played (in a clan) with dsl/cable
Alegis
Stings a bad clanmember, don't listen to him j/k of course noobs on a team are teh suxor, they are easypoints for the enemy. Noobs shouldn't run in the open but try not to die easily instead of trying so hard to kill. Find someone who is good and follow him and cover his back, its what i did when i started, and i covered his back and he was nice support. almost never got killed that way then... Oidar
Just a few other things I thought I'd add. "You aren't Rambo and this isn't an army of one" I dont know how many times I've played BF1942 or BF:V and been on a team thats been beaten stupid by people that think they can win the game on their own. Team work is crutial, always work in pairs, if someone calls for help go help unless your in a position where you can't help, like on the opposite side of a map. As everyone one else has been saying Communication is the most important thing, knowing where your enemy is, their numbers, and possible vehicles allows for quick and decisive action and an ability to prepare properly for anything they may throw your way. All I can really say is Team work, Team Work, Team Work. "Know your role" Its almost a given that you need to know each characters strenghts and weaknesses in order to be properly effective with them, there is nothing worse than someone taking an assault unit and trying to destroy a tank or something completly numb like that. Let the anti armor ppl do that, stick to killing soldiers. Support classes like a medic should stick with a small group of people to keep them fighting longer. I hate nothing worse than seeing a medic trying to be the hero and kill a bunch of people. if you can kill someone then please do so, it will help your team out, but if someone gets injured get your butt in gear and heal them let someone else cover you and stick to what your character does best. Learn what tactics work best in which situation and what character is best suited to the task at hand. "Learn the lay of the land" Know where everything is on a map. Certain people, snipers for example usually return to the same spot over and over to pick people off. Knowing where they are going to be will greatly increase your odds of getting them before they get you. Learn where all the choke points are, most maps have areas where only a couple units can pass at a time, knowing where these are will allow you to stop the flow of enemy troops. Learn different routes to differnt bases. Nothing will annoy the enemy more than having someone seem to slip behind them and into their base without them knowing, especially when they dont know how u got around them. "Be Unorthodox" Doing things the enemy doesn't expect will throw them off. I had a friend that use to do kamakazi runs into enemy bases in BF:1942 using Jeeps and dynamite. Sounds stupid right?, well it is BUT he killed alot of ppl doing that cause they didnt expect it. Dynamite in medical lockers was a good tactic to, how many people actaully look at the bottom of one while their being healed? not alot of people. "Use Team Speak" Well maybe not team speak but something like that is essential, in a game like this you need to beable to talk to your team mates in real time. If your typing a message your as good as dead. Thats all I've got to add for right now, I hope this helps a bit.
PBF
Following on the Team Speak comment: I imagine brevity is essential in online communication, so what about a player name? I see some pretty exotic names on the forums, but do you use shorter, more easily identifiable names when playing or just come up with nicknames through familiarity? Thanks again for the informative answers.

Thanks again for the informative answers. Thats a good question, I think a short name is probably better or if your playing with friends have them call you by a nickname. my name for example is just radio backwards so instead of ppl trying to pronounce what they see they usually just call me radio when were in a game. Most of the time though it doesn't really matter. On a random public server very few people will refer to someone by their name. Most of the time they just jabber our random commands and hope someone takes the time to do one of them. If you play on a server enough and become a regular on it then someone will give you a nickname if they can't pronounce your name so I don't think you should worry about the name issue. If your trying to get someones attention and you cant pronounce their name or its way to long to type try using the first 3-5 letter of their name, usually thats enough to get their attention. Hope this helps some.

Oidar
exactly, see if you've got a really unique name then you have nothing to worry about. someone might say your name and even though it may only sound slightly like your name you'll know who they are speaking to. Oidar
something else that may come in handy. Unless you've played BF:1942, BF:V, COD, DOD, don't take the sniper class. Alot of people, especially noobs suck with sniper rifles. I'm not one to say dont play as a sniper but if you suck at it and really want to be a sniper then try your hardest to impress the ppl on ur team and make every attempt to be somewhere that your useful. To many times i've seen noobs choose the sniper class only to hide somewhere very close to their base and not venture out to find a good sniping spot. Snipers are not close combat units and alot of people tend to forget that. Dont try to back someone up in a close combat situation. if you see someone run into a building then wait outside and wait from a distance this way u can kill anyone that runs out. Snipers lead a life of solitude so when u decide who you want to be in the game ask yourself, "Do I want to be in the middle of all the action?" if you answer yes to that question then dont take the sniper. some people are exceptions and do quite well as a sniper in both close combat and ranged attacks but those people are few and far between. I'm quite good with a sniper class.........from a distance, but not in a close combat situation. I know my limitations and as such I only help in the areas I know I can help in. One more thing about sniping, Don't shoot twice from the same location if there is more than one person running through an area then you will have to take more than one shot to try to get everyone but as soon as your done shooting move to a new spot cause someone will come looking for you. Always move around, I can't stress that enough and if at all possible get behind the enemy to take them out. If they don't see where the shot came from they can't go looking for you. Also sometimes it takes sacrafice to get ahead. If you cant get to a flag cause a few people are guarding it then take one for the team, run into the area while a couple team mates lob grenades in you'll be to much of a tempting target for the others to run from and by the time your dead so are they thanks to the grenades your buddies tossed in. Hope this helps some.

gpete13
Playing online is fun. I have SOCOM II, and I never play the offline version of it. Most the people I have played with are cool, some take it a little too seriously and the language can be harsh sometimes, but nothing stops you from finding another place to play. The only thing I can think of is people get annoyed when other their team mates are down to 1 guy and are out numbered, but they hide. its a little annoying waiting for the loner to get killed if they have no chance. Most people playing are cool though.
