This I agree with.... but it didnt start or stop with Christmas.... Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Valentines Day all seem to keep juggernauts like Target/Kmart and Hallmark tickin along....

what makes me even more sad about chistmas is that consumer fever seems to have hit countries that arent even Christian, like Japan, South Korea and even Turkey(I know this because Im Turkish).....

I dunno, I dont get it. I only had to start worrying about 'celebrating' christmas when i moved in with my gf 4 years ago. All it is now its an extra bit of spending in december, it doesnt add to or detract from the value of jesus(or Hazreti Isah as he is calle in the Kuran) teachings... I would like to add Isah, although being a very important prophet in the islamic faith doesnt get the same treatment(in fact none of the islamic prophets do)....

so, damn the dutch and the yanks for ruining christmas then... The Dutch are partially excused because they sell legal pot and have top quality porn :D ah, thats is what I would like for christmas :D

I like the food, I like the day, but in the end, I like the family.

Thanksgiving is a wonderful excuse for our entire family to come together for one day (40 people under my roof). we eat, we talk, we laugh, we play games. It's just a really fun day where I get to family I don't see much. This year we had relatives from Boston who I haven't seen in 5 years, and I REALLY enjoyed that.

So you can rip on the commercialization of holidays if you want, and i'll agree. But the things I take from Thanksgiving and christmas aren't the gifts, they're the moments with family in my memories.

Exactly. Except I don't have relatives in Boston. :D

My family doesn't need an excuse. Holidays sux0rz! :p

Honestly, it's not our fault Santa has corporate endorsements!
Billy-Bob Thornton is the definitive Santa. You must see the movie, provided you're old enough.

You can go blame the Dutch for Santa Claus, but our "Sinterklaas" doesn't have anything to do with Christmas at all. It's just an old man in a dress, that loves children, and brings them presents on his birthday - December 5th.

Then again, Americans always sucked when it comes to rip-offs :p

Exactly, i won't start 'moaning and pissing on the Dutch' because:

1.I'm Dutch.

2. we didn't ruin christmas with it. Over here, it's a tradition to give eachother presents at December the 5th. That way, we could celebrate christmas the way it should be, in my opinion.

And Cap'n... I called our Christmas more 'Good and pure' because we don't have any commercial crap attached to it.

EDIT: Y'know what? I'll just stop right here. If you want to blame us Dutch, at least know that I disagree for said reasons. The least thing i wanted to do with that one comment, was to hijack this thread.

generalizations... generalizations... tsk tsk.

Pay attention to this. We're not all fat, greedy, money laundering, *insert more generalizations here* Americans. Some of us do know what Christmas truly means: which is simply enjoy your family, enjoy your life, share your love for each other...

I'm sure some of your Dutchies also use Christmas as some sort of corporate money scheme too. So as the CapN well put: "Piss and moan" at them.:dozey:

To sum this thread up...

Person1:HOORAY FOR *insert holiday here*!!!

Person2:BOO! *insert person 1's country* f***ed around with *said holiday* and is no longer *insert some purpose*.

Person1:It isnt' like that.

Person2:*insert generalization of Person1's people*

Person1:We aren't all *said generalization*.

Person2:Yes you are.

Person1:No we aren't.

Person2:Yes you are.

Blah blah blah blah.

Americans are greedy fat assholes.

English all have bad teeth and are snooty.

Just about everyplace can have a generalization. But guess what? 95% of the time they are untrue.

Now enough pissing and moaning at each others religions/country/people and get back on the subject at hand...turkey is delicious.

PS:I don't believe in the generalisations btw ;)

Turkey is a wonderful holiday destination as well as holiday meal :D

But surely, generalisation or not, it's obviously the *americans* that have ruined EVERYTHING for EVERYONE, EVER, ALL THE TIME, EVEN TODAY ! :p
