Computer Problems.

Ok, this time it's my brother, must run in the family.

Here's a post he made about it in our Jedi Academy clan forums.

Friday night I was messing around trying to find sounds for my model, I found some in one of the games I had. But when I moved it to another folder it didnt play the sound anymore, when I tried to copy, move, cut, delete it all it said was "access denied" You know that dumb windows thing that comes up when you try todo something with an open file...then all the sudden i started noticing it was doing that to EVERY file I moved. for instance if i make a new notepad .txt file and then move it, it then locks up. I can't move delete or open it, this is happening to everyfile on my computer and its getting out of control. I did a full system scan with norton and it found nothing, but when I tried to scan just a locked file or folder it claimed I didnt have permission to scan it. So if this is a virus its a damn good one. I cant even stop processes in the task manager anymore, I can't do anything its like im on some uber no access guest acount but I've changed nothing.

Help, anyone if you can.

I can't use anything on my computer or I fear it may lock that too.

I also tried system restore and that did nothing aswell.

Help would be greatly appriciated.

hmmm...a system restore hasnt worked ??

if this is happening to every file that is opened, even after restarts and system restore attempts, some system file must be playing up...

so is this XP ? and is it a user or admin profile that is doing this ?? does it do it on all profiles ??

what proggies have been installed/deleted recently ??

He didn't even have an up-to-date virus scanner running, he went and got Norton just for this occation.

I don't think he's tried a system restore.

It happens to all files that are moved, copied, cut, ect. If a file hasn't been moved it's fine.

It is XP, and it is an admin profile. There are no other profiles.

Several things have been downloaded, including Generals mods, that's all I know.

I know he uses IE, and had an outdated virus scanner, but actually this is the first virus he's picked up in a year and a half.

And he went to sleep and seems to have left me with the question answering. >_>

Let's have more information about the downed system.

What file system does the hard drive use?

Is every drive affected? (try writing to a floppy)

Post a screenshot of every tab of task manager. We could use the process information from that and everything else.

Also, don't forget to try booting into safe mode; press F8 while booting and select it from the menu.

There's good evidence to support that this isn't so much a viral problem as it is a hardware issue. Let's here more about the drive itself (capacity, how full it is, manufacturer, age) and the motherboard.

If I wanted to completely rule out virus, I would run a linux virus scanner off a livecd, and if it comes to that, I will provide you with instructions to that end (assuming I can find some good, user-friendly documentation).

And my brother replies:

File system = NTFS

Unknown, i have no floppy disks.

Tried safe mode and it didnt help.

I also tried to start in safe mode then use system restore to go back a few weeks, nothing changed.

Drive info: capacity=37.2GB, 33.2 is used; Manufacturer is (standard disk drives) dunno if thats one but thats all it says. And It is several years old,(3 years im guessing).

Finally the motherboard is (i think this is it, if its not i need to know where to find its info) ACPI Uniprocessor PC.

It's Windows XP, he just uses Windows classic theme.

OK...

so it is a current anti-virus proggie, with all virus definitions updated ??

if so, do this :

1. Run antivirus scan

2. Run ad-aware scan

3. Run spyware scan

(make sure you have latest updates)

5. run a registry cleanup proggie. tweakxp reg cleaner is an ok free one

if after those 5 you still have same problem...

4. pick an earlier system restore point

if unsuccessful, uninstall all recent proggies. Back up files and either do a reformat or re-install from a recovery disc, assuming you have one ...

computers suck sometimes :(

*switch to old pentium3/800 compy*

[EDIT] LMAO !!! Almost immediately after writing that above entry, my laptop(for the first time in its life) got the blue screen of death. This isnt a normal blue screen error, these are the ones that tell you your compy is seriously messed up. I was shocked, because my compy is very well maintained... :( I am in the depths of system settings and recovery discs, with some small hope of resurrecting it... if not, im lucky its a rental under warranty, so it'll be fixed quicksmart :D

compys suck !

Formatting now might be unnecessary, and possibly a pain in the ass, as from what I gather, this is a prebuilt machine, and he probably doesn't have a real xp install cd.

Follow these steps and post the results , including the full ntbtlog.txt if possible (if you can't post everything due to post size restrictions, email it to matt at lfnetwork dot com).

  1. [*]open a run dialog box

[*]type cmd and press enter

[*]once the command prompt comes up, type the following command and press enter openfiles /local on

[*]restart your computer

[*]when starting up, press F8 to get to the advanced start up menu

[*]Choose the option that enables boot logging

[*]After windows boots up, locate the file ntbtlog.txt, which should be in C:\Windows\System32. [You may have to enable viewing hidden files to see it - My Computer, Tools (menu at the top of the window), folder options, view (tab), make it look like this]

[*]Post ntbtlog.txt

[*]open command prompt again by going to run, cmd.exe

[*]type openfiles and hit enter

[*]right click in the command prompt window, and click select all. with everything highlighted, press enter. this will copy the output to the clipboard

[*]Paste the output into a post.

[/list=1]

Openfiles should list what process has opened all those files, and the boot log may tell us when that process is loaded.

After all our effort to fix it, it finally just shut off and we couldn't turn it back on.

We're gonna just get it running again and reformat it.

Thanks for your help, everyone.
