stubert
i'm a mod writer for jedi academy... i come here to talk about some quake 3 hacking that i'm into... do i really need to see a flashing add that says YOU'VE BEEN SELECTED FREE 42 INCH PLASMA TV theres that one and alot of other random banners the java here pulls up. i'm sure if i stared at it long enough i'd get epilepse please remove it. i highly doubt any organization affiliated with a starwars franchise needs a few cents extra from spam clicks, it'd probably be worth your while too since it's visable publicly by people who have not agreed to a terms of service for the website or allowed anyone to run an unfamiliar javascript on their machines (read: people who will sue you for giveing them a seizure) thanks. stubert
upon reading the terms of service i see when i click the register button, it does not say that the website owners reserve the right to run javascript on my machine. i realize that the forums are in java... but come on
Joshi
please remove it. i highly doubt any organization affiliated with a starwars franchise needs a few cents extra from spam clicks Hmm, at which point did you think LucasArts or LucasFilm was giving us money to run this site purely because it has Star Wars content in it? This is a fan site. It is also free to use. Ergo, the admins need to get money to run the place (cuz it aint cheap). Such ads allow us to stay up, they not there purely so the admins get a bit of extra cash in hand. If you don't like it, do what the rest of us do and Use Firefox. I've been using it for over a year and haven't seen any such ad, or any other ads popping up.
coupes.
First, the forums are not in java, I have no clue where you got that from... Secondly, I hope you realise the forums are absolutely free and need the ads in order to remain free. Also, if you read LFNetwork's Privacy Policy, you'll see that the ads are delivered by third party advertizers, this means LucasForums does not choose the ads. Meaning they can't simply remove an ad, as they don't even provide them in the first place. Thirdly, LucasForums is in no way affiliated to the Star Wars franchise, this is purely a fan-based site. Finally, please use the edit button instead of double posting. Also, proper punctuation is really a must, especially when you want to be taken serioulsy. stubert
src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"> whatever, close enough. and i'll keep my punctuation as casual as i feel thanks. if they don't provide the ads, it hardly seems wise to allow a random java script to run on your users machine, even if it is google. but really, there are easier ways to get money from delivered content.. create a subscription service or something (i'd cough up 5 bucks every few weeks), i seriously doubt web designers like having to serve up spam to make cash. Joshi
if they don't provide the ads, it hardly seems wise to allow a random java script to run on your users machine, even if it is google. And at which point did we have any control over that if, again, we don't choose the ads. We're not responsible for allowing random java script on users machines, the third party providers are. but really, there are easier ways to get money from delivered content.. create a subscription service or something (i'd cough up 5 bucks every few weeks), i seriously doubt web designers like having to serve up spam to make cash. Not really, the majority of the members here are teenagers and students, not really willing to pay out that amount per month. The whole point of such a fan site is that it is free we're not really providing much except a way to talk to other fans of whatever genre of game within lucasarts, for something like that, you can go just about anywhere (and they'll probably have the same ads). Making people pay would just drive people away.
stubert
thats a load of crap man, it's just contributing to more useless crap on the internet can i send you 10 bucks and you'll add an exception for my ip?
Joshi
Yeah, that's gonna make people take you seriously.
coupes.
You do realise that most websites use javascript ? I honestly don't see why you think javascript on this particular site is worse than anywhere else, or perhaps your trying to rid every website of thier javascript code as well... The code you linked to is used to show the ads, and it's exactly what it is supposd to do. Honestly, I don't see the problem with it and I hardly see how it can be qualified as 'random', as we know exaclty where it comes from and what it does. stubert
after 20 minutes of clicking on adblock and editing my hosts file it sure seemed random and yes, i've stopped using websites whos designers allow nausiating adverstisements all around. And considering this is privately funded and in no way financially associated with any company. The money from the ads kind of helps.
Bob Lion54
When they where updating to vb3, I was checking out the website that sells the software. It's not cheap, and thats not even counting the server and its mantainence. What do they pay for ads? Like 2 cents or something? If the owners are making money off of the site, more power to you. swphreak
This is really old. You also have the right to not come here if you don't like it. Quoted for emphasis. The admins have pretty much said all they're ever going to say about the ads. I have AdBlock for firefox and haven't had an ad since.

Commas
WTFUGAY's FIRST POST EVER: "proper punctuation is really a must, especially when you want to be taken serioulsy." LOL so... you registered just so you could say "LOL" to a comment about punctuation? Thanks for that contribution. also, i have never experienced a single pop up ad on lucasforums (i use firefox) and the adds along the right side of the page are a nessisary evil, and really not all that intrusive in the first place. If the page happens to load a particularly annoying one, just reload the page if it bugs you that bad. i don't think i've ever put this much thought into the ads until this very instant
coupes.
so... you registered just so you could say "LOL" to a comment about punctuation? Thanks for that contribution. Actually, this is most likely the guy complaining about the ads who simply registered a new account to try to insult me or something, without us noticing. Quite clever actually. Joshi
I'd assumed as such, if my mod powers extended to this area of LF, I'd have checked the IP's. Perhaps a supermod or admin of some sort could check on it. One question to stubert though "awb i will ban you from refresh..." What exactly is that meant to mean? Darth333
I think this thread has lived to its end and what had to be said about ads has been said. As for the rest...
