On February 16, 2006, Star Wars: Empire at War will hit store shelves. The highly anticipated PC game puts the power to command the entire war for the Star Wars galaxy at your fingertips, with battles focused on action-packed combat rather than tedious resource gathering.

LucasArts has just made available a single-player demo for free download. The demo begins with an optional, interactive tutorial meant to teach you the basics in guiding your side to victory. Those looking to jump right into things, however, can skip the tutorial and begin commanding Rebel forces on Hoth right away. From there, the action proceeds as you battle for control of the Outer Rim in the Vergesso Asteroids and attempt to liberate Tatooine from the grip of the Empire. Seated in the Millennium Falcon, Han Solo and Chewbacca lead your space fleet and invasion forces as you go up against TIE fighters, Star Destroyers and even Boba Fett in his Slave I.

Visit the official Empire at War site for details and download links.

Also available February 16 will be a limited Star Wars: Empire at War Collector's Edition packed with exclusive bonus content, including...

* Five new playable Skirmish maps span the galaxy from the shipyards of Kuat to land and space battles on Ryloth and Polus

* 3D lenticular packaging brings to life the classic Star Wars action depicted on the front of the standard edition

* Exclusive concept art illustrates the evolution of the game's look

* Two screensavers that celebrate the Star Wars universe with X-wings, TIE fighters, and a demonstration of the Empire's ultimate weapon, the Death Star

* Four wallpaper images will set your desktop in a galaxy far, far away

Rated "T" for Teen by the ESRB, Star Wars: Empire at War Collector's Edition will be available at retailers for a suggested price of $59.95. Click here to pre-order your copy today and receive a bonus exclusive Empire at War mousepad.

I kinda think it's not worth it....I mean all you are really getting is a couple of maps. The rest of it I could care less for...except maybe the concept art. Anyone know what they mean by 3d packaging?

Will it be in DVD format?

Yes, at least in Europe. Game's in Europe stopped long time ago to be produced in CDs, if the game was more than 1 CD. Yet a multiple-CD version might be out as well, since many companies follow this tactic.

The only thing worth buying this edition are the 5 skirmish maps. Yet, im sure that as soon as it's out, someone will give them away.

More maps is neat, but notice they are skirmish mode... does that mean offline only?

Because if they were online maps, and these are "exclusives" that means only people with the collector's edition could play them, necessarily limiting the number of people on them. So I'm assuming they're offline maps...

Any content like that looks like it would be downloadable after 6 months anyway... Collector's Editions of games tend to be rather cheesy that way, oh well. It's one thing to put it in a collector's tin or include a cool free trinket like a keychain or hood ornament or something, but this? Nah. Not as dumb as the Half Life 2 cardboard box, at least this is something to play... but still!

Notice how it mentioned those planets? Are those the planets you get? I thought those planets were already in the game?

Those planets are already in the game for the conquest mode afaik. This says that it comes with the skirmish maps which are slightly different as they have to have mineable asteroids etc.

Yeah those planets are included in the regular version. Though its my impression that only a few of the regular planets will also be featured as Skirmish maps.

Skirmish maps are playable multi and single player, so yes they would be exclusive skirmish type maps.

Oh, so the planets listed in the collecters edition are playable for skirmish map editor etc, which the regular edition may not have. Well that is a good question for me to ask in the chat coming up, if it gets picked that is. :)

Maybe not a bonus disk, but a sub-section of the play disc. I say this due to the "Main", "Exit" words we can see in the image above. So, by clicking on "exit", you might return to the original menu.

Yet, the whole idea of bonus disk have happened for the X-Wing VS Tie Fighter game; in my box (it was box that time, 1997 i think, no slim dvd cases :)) i had an extra cd with the latest add-ons.

Personally, i don't think 10$ is worth of such add-ons, but since i will return a Batllefront II i have be given as present (worth of 50 euros), i might grab a collector's edition, if there's any ;)

There has been an image of the Collectors edition online.

Theres the Game Disc and a Bonus disc that looks like the Death Star. everything bonus wise will likely be on that disk. The image showed the game was DVD but who knows I wish we could find out as ill be a bit upset if i get the CE and its CD as im sick of 4-6 cd games. DVD Drives are out long enough they shouldnt even do cd releases anymore.

Cost isnt an excuse anymore for not having a DVD drive and they are common enough to find.

On the other hand, noone would like to pay now 40+40$ for EaW and a dvd drive. Not to mention a graphic card, a processor, some ram, a new pc etc etc :)

DVD is more than sure for Europe. Every single pc game that exceeds the 700MB limit is written in DVD. However, cd versions also come up with the dvd one, for the reasons mentioned above.

In Greece, when i game is on dvd, you must order for the cd version (normally with no extra cost for the order).
