I think the requirements are listed on the first link that toms quoted. It takes a 32MB video card, I believe.

Anyways, I set it up to download while I slept and am installing it right now. I'm confused as to what type of game it is - it doesn't look like a FPS but, judging from the screenshots, looks like a improved version of Galactic Battlegrounds (an RTS)...am I right?

Downloadin it now.

TBH, I didn't care about this game that much until I heard it was being developed by members of Westwood Studios, and if you've ever played a RTS game then you know who Westwood is.

I sure do. I own all of their games :xp:

A shame to see them die out. I'm glad some of their employees found new jobs (which is what I'm guessing from your post).

It's a big demo yes, but worth it. However, there are a few things you should know:

1) A few people (myself included) have noticed it takes a painfully long time to load up initially (the game is fine otherwise, but the initial startup is horrendously long, many of us thought the game had crashed).

2) There's a few missions where you have to destroy space stations, by targetting various "hard points" on the starbase to blow it up. Due to some weirdness in the way the hardpoint targets are displayed, if you destroy them in the wrong order, the game goofs up and they all disappear, making completing the mission impossible, or worse, resulting in a "fatal exception" error.

Also, there's no save feature, so you will have to be extremely patient to see the whole thing. Thankfully, there's numerous free mods released that basically hack up the demo so that virtually everything from single player is unlocked (except any missing maps from the full version of course) and let you skip past any parts that screw up. It's so huge I imagine in part because it includes a directX installation, but otherwise I imagine it was distributed to magazines on a 90 or 99 minute CD or a DVD, because it's bigger than standard CD size (80 minute). The "real reason" for the huge size I'm guessing is that instead of stripping out most of the non-demo content, they merely locked it off, which modders unlocked with config and xml files.

It's basically 5 tutorials and a single player "Galactic Conquest" mission that covers at least three planets (not sure exactly how many) with space and ground battles on the Rebellion side. With mods apparently you can take control of the Empire as well (though you normally only get to be the Empire in tutorials).

Looks like a promising game, assuming they support Linux Dedicated servers (no word yet), modding (looks like we're in luck) and support after the game comes out (ie: patches, bonus content, etc; hopefully).

Well I completed most of the tutorials, up to the space battle as the empire. Then, I remembered that they were gonna show Remember the Titans on tv, so I stopped. Now my moms on the computer that can run it, so I have to wait for her to do something else.

Kurgan, are those files considered illegal, or would you be able to link to them?

If anyone is worried about the download time try this link:

I managed to download it in 1 hour 20 minutes on my DSL connection.

If you're talking about the modifications themselves, look here: http://www.lucasforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=676 The two mods I tried worked pretty well with only a few bugs.

Which ones did you try? I know a lot of them are pretty buggy still, and if I ask here I'll probably get a non-biased answer. But if there are some that work well, I'd want to try them. I just don't want to have to deal with a lot of bugs.

I first tried Chriz's mod (the German one) that added space battles to all three planets and a somewhat agressive AI to the Imperials, and it seemed bug free to me.

I also tried a bit of Bryant's mod that includes all the planets. I started as the Imperials and invaded Alderaan, but during the space battle, the space station that appeared on the map never appeared onscreen, so I believe that's a bug. Also, some of the planets' textures in Galactic Mode didn't appear, and I've heard that certain heroes crash the game if they are in a battle that their model hasn't been created for yet. I believe Bryant will fix some bugs in a 2.0 update sometime soon.

That's all I've managed to try so far. There are a few other mods on the Petroglyph Fan Forums, so check there too.

Well THAT was a daft idea!! Modders always find those things, look at the whole hot coffee debacle... ;)
