Community Note From Petroglyph

Hi Guys,

It truly is amazing what the modders have done and hopefully shows the community how easy it is to customize EAW. With that said, I’ve received e-mails from fans asking “what is left?” There are concerns that much of the game has been revealed.

Our answer:

You’ve only scratched the surface. The maps used in the demo are just the tutorial maps and do not reflect the designs found in the full product. Also, there are events and story elements in the full product you currently are not experiencing from an altered version of the demo.

I’m not saying “stop playing the mods.” I just want to make sure you guys know that there is plenty left to see and experience in the full game.

Thanks guys!

Done. :)

PygmyShrew, you should try some of the mods, they give you an even greater insight to the game. And while they don't work perfectly, it's enough to make you want this game more than you could possibly imagine. :D

(pun intended) ;)

*worried*

I don't know, im somewhat concerned about the speed the demo played at and the map sizes :/ I'm not sure a mod would help put this fear to rest? Which mod would you suggest? (bare in mind im a big Empire fan ;))

If you're a big Empire fan, then you should check out our Demo Mod Section.

In particular Bryants Mod is good, and unlocks allmost all planets, vehicles, and heroes.

But, due to not all files are with the demo to the planets, units, etc... the game may crash once in a while. There's only 3-4 ground maps, and 3-4 space maps, and those were created for this demo as I understand it. So they are smaller than the maps in the real game (correct me here, Delphi, if I missunderstood this ;) ).

The speed of the demo is nothing to be concerned about. Retail will be slower. It's been speed up purposly by the Devs.

Geez, relax Jmaster. I have downloaded already 2 mods and believe me, those Moc Cals, Ion Cannon and many planets (although the same space/ground map....Jan, where did you find different maps??) just let me enjoy it a lot more than the first "tutorial".

Also, with all those planets around, AI attacking you, you stryggling to secure some planets etc. just shows me how complicated the Galactic Conquest with all 40 planets is going to be!

Mods lack mostly in that they dont unlock the retreat option, have some problems on ground units/vehicles and the maps; at least the ones i used. Overall, they boost this demo to another level ;)

Ofourse, we do know that final game is not going to be a "bigger" demo, and that's just thrilling.

Skirmish mode, and multiplayer are the primary reasons to get the game after playing the mods. That and the wide variety of maps for land and space battles that we don't have access too. Furthermore, Galactic Conquest will be all the more sweet.

I also wanna know about the retail game speed. The fact that a game is retail doesn't necessarily mean the game will be slower, I know because most demos I've played run far slower than full games(for instance, the Rome Total War Demo).

The devs have explicitely said that the demo speeds for build times, fleet transport times, etc have ALL been sped up because they wanted you to get a feel for the game faster. They have stated that the full version of the game will have much slower build times, etc. Also if the times and such seem too fast for you, they have included the ability to change the rate at which time proceeds to slower speeds, or to even pause the game to make changes.

I don't think you need to worry about the full version of the game being too fast for you to handle.

Darthfergie, maybe he refers to the game speed as to what cpu resources it demands and so the general "speed", how it runs on a system, not the building/travel ones.

Yet, i might be wrong ;)

If he is referring to teh CPU speed then wouldn't that mean the game would be worse if stuff runs slower. If he is referring to the gameplay speed, then I hope it is slowed.

@Daddyboom

Try one of the mods with AI, they advance too fast, it needs to be slowed.

Question for the Dev's:

I've noticed that the demo is sluggish during battles if I turn the settings up past medium. My PC is double or more than the minimum specs shown in the FAQ section of Empire at war.net. I can run Rome Total War with maximum settings without any problem.

So, I'd say the system resource requirements are a concern to me. Will there be more options for graphics and sound in the full version? Or, even better, will the full version run more smoothly? With the currrent options in the demo, I can't seem to find a balance that runs smoothly but still looks great.

Here's my specs:

P4 2.8Ghz

Apx 750 Meg ram

Audigy ZX2 sound card

256 Meg Raedon video

That should be enough for an RTS... I'm worried that it will be even slower with higher unit counts, but I've already pre-ordered the game.

The cpu is the biggest bottleneck in RTS games because of the AI and pathfinding. Your Ram, sound card and video card are fine. But if you upgraded your CPU, you'd probably see the biggest impact.

I have similar specs so I know what you are talking about.

I have P4 2.8Ghz

1.5GB ram

Radeon 9800 pro 128MB

I can just quote that.

So, I'm not alone. With the grey ghost mod, I've noticed that once I've got 3/4 of the galaxy captured it starts to slow down even on the galactic map, but that could be a problem with the mod. I wonder what kind of performance experience the dev team has had with the full version, in the process of testing?
