Boycott the World Cup Prostitution

This is just disgusting:

Thousands of sex slaves are being imported to "service" men during the World Cup games. Sounds like the "comfort women" of Japan all over again.

The problem is apparently nothing new, but no less tragic and horrible in its promotion of human misery. Makes me mad!

As if the sport wasn't already besmirched enough with all the drunken violence from fans...

It's called human trafficking, the slave trade of the 21st century.

Debts to pay? Sell a human being... it's sick.

I agree its sick and disgusting, but "boycott the World Cup?" I think I missed something. Are the promoters of the WC bringing in the sex slaves? Or perhaps its Anheuser-Busch, the primary sponsor. And if it is not either of these entities; and if we're to boycott the WC in order to apply economic pressure on the event that is central to the slavers that are taking advantage of a money-making opportunity, should we not then boycott Anheuser-Busch and not buy another Budweiser?

THIS would have more of an economic effect that boycotting an event that will air whether we choose to watch it or not.

But, perhaps its easier for an American to call for the boycott of a non-American event than to call for the boycott of an all-American beer!

I modify the call for boycott: Boycott the World Cup and Anheuser-Busch! Don't buy Budweiser beer products! The sponsor of the World Cup is contributing to the sex-slave trade!

A good point actually. Many boycotts cover a network of products rather than just one for a short time. I'll gladly support a boycott Anheuser-Busch as well (I don't drink beer anyway). The event and the product(s) together account for a huge amount of money and publicity. I wouldn't suggest going to the Cup and just avoiding the prostitute tents as an effective way to promote human rights.

Can we count you in then, Skin?

Yep. Many people agree Bud sucks, period. ;)

Now that we've weeded out any possible hypocrisy...

FIFA says: "It's not our responsibility."

So again, the burden falls on us.

Clearly boycotting beer and sport are really touchy issues (since these are the most popular things since... ever). It's been suggested to me that people should write letters to the German authorities and such "instead."

Whatever suits your conscience best I say, better than doing nothing and sending euros to support this crap.

Or you could, you know, not get hookers when you go to Germany?

What do you expect FIFA to do? Unleash the soccer teams on the pimps and have a battle to the death?

Sure, this isn't exactly a good thing, but blaming FIFA, and expecting them to magically fix it doesn't seem very wise to me. Why not protest to the actual government that legalized it? Why not "Boycott Germany" instead?

Boycott Germany? Because of what? That some twit(s) decided the World Cup would take place here? Or because some others want to make money (which way ever) out of it? Because it would not happen somewhere else?

Also, I fail to see how the supply appears to be more of a problem instead of the demand.

Seriously, this is bollocks.

I had thought they overturned that.

Yeah, don't believe the hype media. :p

Well er... boycotting the WC means missing a lot of damn good soccer. :p

It sucks that Germany has legal prostitution, maybe we should start sending letters to their government or something rather than trying to boycott the what, 2nd largest international affair besides the Olympics :p

Recommended read of the week if you're interested in slavery. It's about Craig Kielburner, human-rights-activist, travelling Asia to fight against child labour. As such, of course it's focus is children forced to work for various reasons, but it has a chapter on Thai child-prostitution as well. It speaks of children being kidnapped from their villages in large numbers and forced to have sex in the cities.

Once again, I whole-heartedly recommend it.

It sucks that Germany has legal prostitution

Any why is that, exactly?

This should probably be made its own thread as it's off-topic and such a large issue, but... Do you really think it's going to do a thing to criminalize prostitution? It's not like prostitutes are selling their bodies for fun. It's not as if they have a choice, more than the people made to fight each others in the late Bumfight (I shall sorely miss it -it was a great monument of evil exploitation of poverty:p) or work for fifty cents a 10-hour day in factories at the age of nine. If you want to end prostitution, help the prostitutes. They need aid, not jail-time and a criminal record on top of all their other problems.

Banning the buying of sex, however, appeals a little more to me. Punish the people taking advantage of the victim's desperate need for money, rather than the victim him/herself.

No such thing as "good soccer" first of all.

As far as I know, Germany did not legalize sex slavery/forced prostitution. Nothing wrong with having legal, consensual prostitution (it being illegal is stupid and counterproductive). If a woman wants to sell herself for sex to make cash, fine by me; it's her body, and if she wants to take the risks, I don't care.

Yeah I'm with TK, I'm not here to debate the LEGALITY of prostitution, only the trafficking of human beings and the abuse and exploitation of women through it in Germany, brought about due to the percieved demand for more prostitutes because of the World Cup.

If you want to argue about prostitution ITSELF in general, best do that in another, seperate thread.

I don't think the world cup sponsors or organisers can be blamed for criminal gangs increasing their activity because they have more potential customers.

The governments and police probably need to do more to crack down on this kind of thing, but its probably a lot harder to prove than something like drug smuggling. Hence why it is booming.

Well they should get out there and check prostitute liscenses and visas or however it is they check legal prostitutes. I mean they have setup tents for "relief."

Indeed.

I'd think that having legal brothels would severley drive down the price that any illegal, forced prostitutes could demand... meaning it wouldn't be as profitable for the men who would be transportng them and forcing them to work.
