Playing TSL, without playing Kotor

Hey everyone, I'm thinking about buying TSL, but i haven't played Kotor yet (truth is I can't find it anywhere now) and I've heard from many that It gets confusing if you don't play the first game. So is this true? Is it worth just skipping to the second game or is it rather necesarry to play both?

First off welcome to the Forums.

I reccomend you get KOTOR first, because then you can understand the story alot better in TSL. If you can't get KOTOR, go to your local Game shops and see if they've got a preowned one. I've seen loads of preowned KOTOR/TSL games.

An important point of KotOR2 is to also found out what became of the protagonist of the first game. I wouldn't call it essential to play KotOR1 first, though, because all the relevant details are described through the sequel, which takes place five years later.

I do recommend playing KotOR1 first, though, because it's a good game and just as good as the sequel. Besides, you have a much greater investment with some of the character in KotOR2, if you've played KotOR1 first. But for the sake of following the plot, it is not essential. It just helps to detail the background and characters.

Okay, thanks for the advice, And I did find a new game of KOTOR 1 for a pretty good price, but I heard there's more glitches and bugs in the first game than in the second. So is that a major problem, or do the patches usually fix them?

Nah , the second game has a lot more glitches and bugs. I still prefer KoTor 1 if you ask me. You will really enjoy playing KoTor 1 first. You will pretty much see before and after on planets such as Dantooine. Its pretty amazing to see'em.

That's untrue. There can be a couple nasty bugs, but updating your game gets rid of them.

I've played a good deal of KotOR1, and I've never patched it, because I never felt the need to. I don't even recall encountering glitches, beyond the occasional crash that seem to occur in all games at times. And those have been far more frequent in KotOR2, is is much more renowned for its bugs.

Sure there are a few bugs in KotOR1, but you'll really have to look hard to find them. It is a programming marvel of mathetical efficiency next to KotOR2, which has many bugs as a result of its rushed programming schedule. Heck, the patches for KotOR2 even cause bugs not seen before, from what I hear, so I never installed one. That never stopped me from finishing the game, though.

I have only ever run into one bug in KOTOR 1. I know there are more but I never found them. And I have never updated or patched the game in a any way because my computer that plays KOTOR isn't connected to the internet. :spin:

EDIT: Oops sorry Jediphile I didnt see that you already basically said this.

No reason to apologize. I actually think several of us having this experience actually helps to underscore the point and help Ro'bert to make an informed decision. So your comment is helpful more than anything as far as I can see.

That's not really a given. I encountered very few problems with KotOR II. It crashed a maybe twice, but so did KotOR I. There are bug horror stories from both games, but it's generally pretty random. I wouldn't worry too much about technical problems, Ro'bert.
