Movie idea submission?

I've had an idea for a storyline for awhile now. I recently decided to try to write a book. Unfortunatly, I don't exactly have book-writing experience. I told a few people some ideas about the storyline and they really thought it was unique and interesting. Most of them mentioned that it would be an awesome movie to see.

 

I've seem some pretty crappy movies released out there and know that my idea would completely blow them away. So, I was curious, anyone have any ideas how to get my idea out there where it counts?

Well as the saying goes, "Ideas are cheap" But if you can manage to develope that idea into either a book, or a screenplay then there are plenty of sources to help you out. Selling just an idea, well I can't help you though.

1. Start off with storyboards. Organize your ideas into some order

2. Get people to help: The actors, crew, etc. Rehearse a lot.

3. Gather your resources. The $, the equipment, etc. Make sure you have something more than Windows Movie Maker to do the post production. Check out this It's not exactly Hollywood quality but it can do some pretty good stuff. Best yet, it's free!

4. Film

5. Post Production. Add your music and sounds

6. Release. A lot of people are getting noticed on YoutTube/Gogle Video.

I've had a few movie ideas for awhile, most of them involve 3D stuff since I have 3dsmax. I haven't actually filmed any of them yet, but I have started storyboarding one. Lately though I've thought about making that particular idea into a game on Source engine instead. Or both. Who knows, I'll see how it comes out.

One of my future job possibilities. If you're into going to school for it, UCLA and other southern California schools have excellent reputations for film.

 

Before you submit anything to anybody make sure you register you get a copyright for your script and/or Library of Congress and the Writers Guild of America. If someone hears your idea, they will take it if they think its good.

 

Find a group of people or an online group or a local group or start a group to help you in your journey. If you get connections, people will hear about you and remember you and your story.

 

Write. Write every day. If you can't, write in your head and toss ideas around. Your brain needs exercise too .

 

Lastly, the best thing that you can do is to read other's movie scripts, whether they be Hollywood blockbusters or short artsy films, they will help you by giving you some experience and a feel for writing them. Google around for websites that host them, http://www.imsdb.com/ is a good one but you can look around for some more. There are also websites that will host your scripts, but I've never actually used them for anything more than to read other's ideas.

I already google it all, but I prefer to get hands on opinions of a community before making a decision. Websites are biased toward a single thought.

The best you're going to find at this level is a website. Since you apparently have no prior writing experience, the film community isn't going to welcome you with open arms, start small, work yourself up.

 

What thought are these sites biased against?

My father is a world travelling photographer and video producer, and my brother is in his senior year of college getting a masters in film production and minor in screenwriting. He is currently attending BIOLA university, which is pretty well known for it's film department.

 

If you've ever heard of "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" that movie was written and produced by a BIOLA student, who graduated not too long ago (if I remember correctly). The best thing to do is, as RoxStar said, simply start writing. I know that I personally want to enter the film business, and I too have started on a script to film with my friends (luckily I have very easy access to video cameras, professional video editing equipment, as well as a studio if needed, not to mention a summer's worth of classes on video production). That's what my brother did, he started filming silly videos with friends, and now look where he is, living in LA with friends, about to graduate college, and already has his name out because of films he's entered into film festivals (which is also a great way to get your name out).

Well, for stories, I've had this idea for a story in my head for over 4 months now. I've been mulling over the ideas and the story arch. But I haven't even thought about character names or anything.

All I have is a 10 page .txt file full of my ideas and outlines. One sketch of a location, and one page written in word in paper-back sized pages and font size.
