Wedge Suron
I wasn't sure on which part of the forum this belongs in, possibly T3-M4's Astromech Droid Center. Move to the right forum if neccesary, I'm not sure. Thanks for the person that moves it if it's needed. I'm serious about the point that I'm not sure. This Forum isn't that helpful for this kind of thing. Moved from Kavar's Corner If you take a game design course? Would this help with mod making skills? I'm considering taking up one, and possibly understand the workings of a game much better and possibly start making mods. This course needs at least 2 GCSEs and a Level 3 IT qualification. It will probably take quite a while. I umm, never went to - Went to one but didn't stay in it long enough actually - a school that did GCSEs which'll take a while to do them probably. adamqd
Theres a lot of tools and tutorials here, made by LF members. That's a good start, I'm sure folks will be happy to help you in the Editing and Trouble shooting sections
tk102
I don't think taking a game design course is at all necessary to learning how to mod. Reading/watching tutorials, browsing around with KotOR Tool, and being patient are keys to success. Also, you should be able to figure most things on your own without posting a question. That's not to say that people aren't willing to help, but the best advice is to patiently learn things on your own. All the information from the past 5 years is here on the forums, waiting for you to discover it. http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=143421

I'd also add that a bunch of practice and a good demeanor when posting are necessary. And I'm not sure what you mean by "This Forum isn't that helpful for this kind of thing." I disagree. There are a bunch of descriptions right here. And you could always ask if they weren't clear enough. Or send someone you know a PM. _EW_
Osuirof
This Forum isn't that helpful for this kind of thing. Not true, but you must try, try, try, try try try somethings yourself. And not asking for things that was answered a hundred times before. Would this help with mod making skills? If all the games was made with one "engine" then sure, but they`re not. Wedge Suron
Meh, I'd probably get some good mods out though wouldn't I?
jonathan7
Meh, I'd probably get some good mods out though wouldn't I? Short answer no, also I think it unwise to pay all that money for the sole aim of modding KotOR, there are other things to life. Just because you do a game design course is no guarantee of quality, plenty of game companies, with qualified brains produce awful games. Modding is about patience, understanding, experimentation and fine details. This Forum isn't that helpful for this kind of thing. Err, only if you can't read. You originally posted this in KC, right under the link to Kavar's is this; A place for friendly discussion of serious topics. As EW said, the main page has a little description under the Sub Forums name describing what goes in that forum. Also use that wonderful thing; common sense. If you see a forum has a whole load of poltical and religious discussions in it, safe bet its NOT a modding forum. If your not sure where a topic goes, make life easier for the moderators and PM them asking where to post the thread, instead of giving them even more work to do and having to move a thread. They're not here so people can be lazy, they have lives and jobs too, and they moderate here out of the goodness of their own hearts. So try and make life easier for them
Papership
Hey! And welcome to modding! Do give it a go. You definitely do not need a course to do this. A lot of people here have never even seen a script before joining HL. All you need is a fairly reasonable brain, and the time to read through all the walkthroughs and tutorials. You'll find that the forum already has 98% of the answers to any questions you might have. You can also learn a lot from sifting through the contents of other people's mods to see how things were done. To top it off, HL community is full of very helpful people (this is coming from someone who like you had no programming background, so I know how daunting it all looks). If you need help, or just a cheering section, you only have to ask Happy Hunting, ~Pap~
settoken
You definitely do not need a course to do this +1 You have everything here to get started. But it won't replace you trying things by yourself and enjoying it. But an advice, don't pay for it. If you want to work in the video game industry, that's ok search for a school but if it's just modding, don't pay for it.
Wedge Suron
Eh? I've still got to go through GCSE's and a Level 3 IT course before I can consider going into game design.
Totenkopf
If you wish to go into game design in general, I guess it couldn't hurt. As far as modding KOTOR goes, save your time, money and frustration and use the aforementioned resources. Ancient chinese secret: reverse engineer things. Figure out what you want to do, see if someone here hasn't done something similiar, look at their work and then see if you can't adapt it to your needs. Oh, yeah, whatever you do, load up on a healthy does of PATIENCE. You'll need it.
