KotOR: Frontlines

One thing that's always annoyed me is the lack of seemingly common side quests in KotOR. I mean, you can solve a murder case, dive underwater to find an alien navigational chart, and help a woman find her droid lover, but you can't actually fight in the so called "war" that's going on. In this mod, I plan to change that.

This mod will add two NPCs to the game. One will be a Sith Draft Officer, who will be in the Sith Academy on Korriban. The other will be a Republic Draft Officer, who will be in the Republic Embassy on Manaan. The purpose of both of these NPCs will be to recruit soldiers to send to the front lines of battle.

I plan to have 4 options available to the player, 2 through the Sith, and 2 through the Republic. For example, as a Sith, you can choose to be a reinforcement on a Sith Interductor Ship, which will be attacked while you're on it. You can also choose to be part of a strike team that will board a Republic vessel, with the aim of either destroying it or obtaining enemy intelligence. Through the Republic Officer, you have the same options, but switched around. i.e. instead of boarding a Republic ship, you would board a Sith ship, and instead of reinforcing a Sith ship, you would reinforce a Republic ship.

However, you can't be expected to take things like this on alone. If you choose to be part of a strike team, then you will, in fact, lead a team of soldiers, and if you choose to be a reinforcement, you will have several of your fellow soldiers stationed on board the ship. However, there will be solo encounters with other Jedi/Dark Jedi in which you won't have any help, just to keep things interesting ;)

The difficulty of these missions will be harder than the normal gameplay, but not impossible. And if you take into account that you have your very own team of soldiers, things seem a bit less daunting ;)

As of right now, I am finished with the option of boarding a Republic ship. I have also begun on the defense of the Sith ship. In other words, I'm about 30% there!

Here are a few screenshots for you guys, from the strike team invasion of a Republic vessel:

The only way out after the destruction sequence has been initiated ;)

i've always wanted to be on the frontlines, just a question, these battles will they all be taking place on the ships only? will this affect the main game in any way, i.e will you be able to do some scripting that allows you to be seen as a hero or villan> i ask this as i've seen a couple quests ingame where you do0 something major that affects the planet, good or bad and yet after you've done so its like it never happened, i wonder if im making any sense

Join the front lines for the Sith and take out some Jedi along the way? Where do I sign?

Seriously though, great mod idea and I really look forward to joining the war. Good luck on this, its looking excellent.

Thanks for all the encouragement guys :)

UPDATE!

I now have a blank Sith flagship, and am currently in the process of adding NPCs and mission obectives!

As soon as the module is done, I'll post pics :D

Hey, HodgePodge, I really like the look of this. I've thought about doing a mod like this before but I could never find the time to do it, and I'm downloading this once it's finished. Also, if you'd like to use my minigun in this mod as a new gun, feel free to do so. Seeing as it's a war mod, there ought to be quite a few new guns and armor. :uzi2:

Nice idea SithSpecter! Mmmm...I'm gonna go do that right now, I really want to go storming onto a Republic Ship with a squadron of Minigun bearing soldiers :dev10:

If you'd like, you can do a reskin as well. And you might want to edit the stats on it a bit, because you only have to have blaster rifle proficiency to use it.

*WARNING* Remember that the gun is around 8,000 polys, and it probably wouldn't be wise to have 15 soldiers with them all equipped.

Don't worry, I'm giving it to 3 of 'em ;)

Alright, I just didn't want you to fry your computer with a load of miniguns...

The Mini-Gun would look good on the red armored Sith commanders.

Thats just my opinion though.

That's a good idea. Also, I think it'd be cool to have a Sith commando that's got all black armor on.

I've already given the miniguns to the Red-Armored sith, and I'll be sure to add a black-clad Sith Commando SS. Were you thinking of him being part of the strike team, or a defender of a ship?

On a side note, can anyone tell me what to edit a .bik file with? I can open them, but I need to cut them...

Maybe a sort of a mini-boss if you're Republic, or just a defender if you're Sith.

Convert it to a .mpg, .avi, or other video editable format with miles video tools, and then edit it in a regular video editing program, and then use miles to convert it back.

Thanks SS!

One more question xD

Do placables like escape pods and consoles use .dlg files for conversations?

Yes. If you look at a placeable file in Kotor Tool (an .utp file), you'll see that in the "Advanced" tab, there's a "Conversation" field. I believe you only need the scripts if you want doors going open, explosions being triggered, and all that (you get the idea) by using a dialog (like for a console).

Nope, as I discovered by my stalled mod I've been working on, you need to use scripts to fire a conversation with any placeable. But, its just a simple StartConversation (x) or something like that.

Oh, and don't trust the "script", I can't script to save my life, so I'll have to hunt for it and link it.

Ah, yes. I did remember something like that for TSL, yes. My mistake. :)

Hmmm...that link gives the script for TSL. Would it be the same for K1?

Okay, I have another question for any scripters out there. For the Sith Allies that follow you, I have them set to a friendly faction and gave them an OnHeartbeat follow script. However, they're not very aggressive. They will attack, but is there any way to make them actually pursue the enemies?

This is why you always check that you have the correct script (And link) that you need to use.

In this case, I have neither on my current computer. I do know however, that it is something along the lines of "InitateConversation" or the like... asking around in a new thread is probably the best way to do it... that or search the forums...

Sorry for wasting your time like that!
