Marius Fett
As the title suggests, i'm thinking of giving Linux a try. I don't wanna have partition my hard drive, or screw my Vista up however. As I understand, the two options I have are making a Live CD or using Virtual PC/Virtual Box. Which method would you techies recommend?
Q
I myself would try the Live CD first, as it would seem to be the most hassle-free way to try it out.
Marius Fett
Cheers Q. I'll get downloading.

Marius Fett
Well, I haven't actually D/Led yet, (connection troubles) but i'm gonna have a go at using Ubuntu 8.04.1.
Marius Fett
Right, i've just had a go, and it was really good! Not too different from Windows, and generally fun to use. Too bad it can't run exe files though. I think I may still get VirtualBox though. (To install WinXP ) I'll definitely use Ubuntu in the future. Ray Jones
Well, you could always use WINE to run Windows programs.
Marius Fett
I thought of that, but would things like Photoshop and 3DSMax work?
Negative Sun
I've used VB before and was really pleased with it, even on my old school machine, so if you've got a PC that's pretty decent and you don't want to go into partitioning and dual-booting, VB might be a damn good alternative for you...Give it a try
Ray Jones
I thought of that, but would things like Photoshop and 3DSMax work?I'd use GIMP and GIMP Animation Package instead of Photoshop as a native replacement. However, while most Photoshop versions should work in WINE (Versions 6 to 9 are listed as "Platinum Application", which means they run flawlessly ootb), I think there are still some issues with newer 3DSMax versions. Most 3DSMax tests are older than 1-2 months though, so using a recent WINE version could change that.
Ray Jones
Alternatively, and if you don't need to use 3DSMax, you could give Blender a try.
Marius Fett
@Negsun Ok, i'll have a go at VB. I've finally decided to actually switch my OS back to XP aswell... @Ray Yeah, I need Max because it's needed for NWMax to run. (I model for KotOR) ___ I'll switch back to XP anyway, then run Ubuntu through VB if I ever fancy a change.
Ray Jones
There's an export plug-in called NeverBlender which enables Blender to create .mdl files. However, what the hell do I know if it works, I don't even have KotOR.

Marius Fett
Anyways, I just downloaded a really nice Virtualization program called VMWare, and i'm using it to boot Ubuntu and probably XP as well. Thanks for the advice everyone.
Ray Jones
Virtualisation does not offer any accelerated 3D "hardware".
