Question about mods

Out of curiosity whats LucasArts, Biowares and Obsidians opinnion on modding the Kotor games, (is it allowed)?

Thanks

I'm not sure on what their exact opinion is, but modding for K1/TSL is in a sort of 'gray area' that we decide not to test the extends of by porting from other game.

My understanding is that LA didn't want modding, which is why in the early days all threads about modding on the Bioware forums were locked/deleted. It has always struck me as an odd position, as there are plenty of other Star Wars games where modding is endorsed. I think over time they've gradually accepted that it will occur regardless, so they've relaxed their stance on it slightly, although they still don't support it "officially".

Is that why none of the topics about mods on Obsidian's forums were locked or deleted because I was reaserching this today and noticed although all mod topics on Bioware's forums were locked that wasn't true on Obsidian's, and if LucasArts was against mods early on why does LucasFiles host Kotor 1 mods?

No-one's entirely certain. BioWare won't allow any discussion of KotOR modding on their site. LucasArts seems to be indifferent and/or as positive as they would be for a game for which modding isn't supported.

Obsidian do allow discussion of modding of TSL on their forums, but are bound by NDAs and things not to discuss it themselves, IIRC.

We're allowed to exist as long as we play by their rules of what we are and aren't allowed to do. While we do that, we are allowed to exist.

I was just reading the topic on Bioware's forums where they said all topics about mods will be locked or deleted and I read that the JK license agreement had rules governing New Levels but Kotor's didn't, so I looked into the license agreement for Best of the PC (since thats the version I have) and in the license agreement that all the games except Galaxies fallows has a section governing New Levels so does that mean LucasArts decided that modding the Kotor games is OK

I heard that Kotor came with an overide folder after you install it, or is that the Best of the PC version, I'm asking this because if Bioware didn't allow mod disscusion on their website why would Kotor come with an overide folder?

sorry to bring this up again, I'm just confused because I've heard all mods were illegal and I've heard mods are legal, but as a 14 year old who is scared of doing something illegal the few times I heard mods are illegal still worry me event though most of the time I hear they're legal.
