Ogriv83
Im looking to get a new laptop. I say a laptop over a desktop so that i can take it with me when going away. One of my main uses for it is to be a permantet home for both KOTOR 1 and 2. Bad i know but i cant keep getting interupted by the other half becasue she wants to look at shoes. I would like to know what reccomendations you guys have for which models to buy. Any ideas would be most helpfull. However if there really is no option compared to desktop then some suggestions would be good Thanks ps i live in England if that will make a difference but i cant see how

Demongo
I have a laptop and I have only three simple suggestions: TOSHIBA Don't buy one under 675 pounds or games will freeze, and won't work properly If you can, change Vista to XP/ME/2000 or whatever
Q
^Not to be rude, but, aside from the Toshiba part, that is horrible advice. I've managed to get KotOR 2 to run decently at 1280x768 on one of the cheapest modern laptops (a Toshiba Satellite), and on Vista to boot. It has a Pentium Dual-Core T2330 @1.6GHz, 2GB RAM and an Intel Mobile 965 chipset (which uses an Intel GMA X3100 GPU, I think). The newest cheap Intel-based laptops sport a Pentium Dual-Core T4200 @2GHz or a T4300 @2.1GHz and an Intel X4500 GPU (Series 4 chipset), both of which are quite a bit more powerful than those in the laptop that I used. You'll have to jump through a few extra hoops to get the games to run on an Intel GPU, but if myself and others can do it, I sure that you could, and it won't cost you an arm and a leg. And don't be afraid of trying to run the games on Vista. Once again, it will require jumping through a few hoops, but if you do that they will work fine. EDIT: I recently saw a Compaq laptop configured exactly like what I'm talking about (T4200, 3GB RAM, 250GB HDD, Intel Mobile Series 4 chipset) for $350.00 here in the States, which is about £217. That was an outstanding deal, and you probably wont find it that cheap over there in the UK, but that should give you a (very) general idea of what you can expect to pay for one. You should be able to find one on sale for ~£300-£325.
Ogriv83
Thanks alot Evil Q for the advice. After a bit of thought I decided to go for a desktop. Its Intel Dual Core E220 @ 2GB, 2 RAM with Nvidea GEForce 7100 256MB. I got a real good deal as i only wanted the base unit. Its got Vista which as you asid means a bit of hoop jumping. Im sure with the great help i normally recieve from guys such as yourself I should be fine. Im just a little rusty with working with these badboys. :-)
Q
Expect less than stellar performance from that 7100. It's pretty much the bottom of Nvidia's barrel.
Astrotoy7
I have a laptop and I have only three simple suggestions: TOSHIBA Don't buy one under 675 pounds or games will freeze, and won't work properly If you can, change Vista to XP/ME/2000 or whatever This type of advice is not that helpful. Whilst recommending a brand is fine, not explaining why or listing relevant specs does not arm the OP with much information to even begin to make a purchase decision. @Ogrive83 - laptop choices really come down to what you are willing to spend. After that - invest in a cooling pad! Most laptops arent built to last - and won't last especially if you are churning away on a game for hours on end. Gaming laptops do exist, with fantastic specs - but they cost an arm and a leg. I'd recommend Windows 7 over Vista, but whether it is appropriate for you dpeends on what apps you use and what scope of compatibility there is. If for some reason all you want to do is play KOTOR and nothing else major - an XP dual boot may be in order - but if you get a GPU that is reasonably decent - you many not have to worry about that. Many of us have K1/2 working in Vista ndm W7 - but then again - some dont. XP will take that uncertainty out of the picture Certain versions of Windows 7 do have an inbuilt XP virtualisation(if your CPU supports it), but this is not relevant to gaming. Im definitely over KOTOR myself. Ive only been playing it to test and report back to these folks. With games like Mass Effect 2, Assassins Creed 2 coming out...I'd rather save my SW gaming juice for at least giving TOR a trial when it comes out. mtfbwya
