Out on GoG and Steam

Well, of cause all in here know, but in case some of you didn't catch the pre-order-thingy from Double Fine some weeks ago, Grim Fandango Remastered is out on both GoG and Steam.

Bought it on GoG some days ago for €11.89, and it seems to be €14.99 on Steam ... but the Steam version seems to have achievements, unlike the GoG version.

Not yet, only on the 27th. But is available for pre-order, yes.

But the GOG version has some nice bonuses and is DRM-free, unlike the Steam version. :p

Let me correct myself: You are now able to actually pay for Grim Fandango again, after 15 years, on both GoG and Steam ... but no, it will not be released until tomorrow :)

Do you get anything except for the HD wallpaper, which is actually quite nice :)

Heh. I just PMed Thrik about that. And Blackmonkey has been working on an Italian version that will need a place to stay when it's done. (To judge from the quality of his questions to me about the slang and half-assed wordplay I put in there, I expect he's doing a damn-fine job of it.)

I haven't had much time to play, but the opening cutscene is pretty much perfect. It always annoyed me how the knob of Excelsior turned into a mess of blocks when Celso turned the stick to examine the compass. The world is now a much better place. And I've confirmed that "blam" still works, so basically anyone with complaints ought to be punched.

I got no PM, but I'll happily include the novel. I'm expecting to get the updated site up tonight or tomorrow, albeit in a fairly fundamental state to build upon. My main goal was doing away with the ancient code I wrote when I was like 16.

I actually popped you a PM as well, since the totally secret GFN Staff board is retired, where I offered you my humbled body as a professional software developer, asking you if you needed any help getting the GFN ready for the new arrivals due to the GF: Remastered :-)

I just saw that, thanks for the offer ZaXeriaw. At this time I don't think extra hands will actually speed anything up, as the new site is essentially complete in terms of development and it's just adding content now — something that's already going well. :)

Weird. Maybe I forgot to submit it. Must be senile. Or drunk. Anyway, I assume you have the epub already, so would you need anything else? Some sort of other content like a description/summary, fake review quotes/death threats, anything along those lines?

The one version I have is below, let me know if there's a version you'd prefer that I use:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/37346336/projects/grimfandango.net/misc/Grim_Fandango_Novel_-_Charles_Frederick.pdf

It'd be really nice if you could do a foreword actually, a paragraph or few that gives a little insight into what led you to writing the novel, etc. As something that I'm sure a lot of people have enjoyed and will continue to do so, it'd be nice for readers to know a little more about its author. :)

I can also present a photo of yourself and your name alongside the foreword on the page if you'd like. Otherwise I'll just use a piece of Grim Fandango imagery.

Eww, no. Please. Not the PDF. Anything but that.

Apart from being a clunky format in the age of e-readers, it's out of date. A fair amount of editing and some changes were made for the epub version, so let's go with that. Here's the link.

I can do that. I'll give it some thought. I assume there's no life-and-death rush, but I won't dither too long, either.

Let's stick with Grim Fandango imagery. Nobody needs photos of me. Especially Interpol. And there might be people with weak constitutions visiting the site.

Haha, OK. Correct, there's no rush. I intend to put the new site up tomorrow evening, but there's much content to add so I'll include the novel with an update shortly thereafter. There'll be proper contact details for me on the site if you'd prefer to do that rather than risk a PM again.

Monk,

It's strange but as I play through (again..!) my mind sort of fills in the blanks of the story with your excellent novel! I must give it a read through again once I'm done playing the remastered version.

Thrik,

Please let me know if you need any help with the website / forums should things get busier around here. I'd be happy to jump back on board :)

What's everyones Steam usernames? I wouldn't mind adding a few people. I'm on there under 'chlorinekid'

You think that's strange? The first time I replayed the game after finishing the first time it felt like I was playing a super-short, just-the-highlights version of Grim Fandango. It was very strange and very disturbing, like maybe I'd ruined the game for me forever.

But it only lasted for that one playthrough. My perception settled down after that.

I suppose it makes sense in a way that I'd react like that. I approached the whole thing like the game was a derivative work and I was reverse-engineering the original work, reasoning that if GR was partly inspired by film noir, and since many of those movies were based on hard-boiled crime novels, then it followed that if Grim Fandango had been an actual example of film noir from the '40s then there would probably be a novel behind it. After thinking like that for so long in order to get the work done, it was probably inevitable that I'd start looking at the game kind of cross-eyed for a while.

Are you playing through the remastered version with the commentary enabled, Monko? There's nothing particularly revelatory in it, but hearing about the inspiration for various scenes, characters and casting decisions is pretty interesting. I wonder if you'll just be nodding your head thinking "ah yes, I recognised that" for most of it?

Personally, I've just finished playing through on remastered and I'm going through again with commentary on and using only tank controls (I want the steam achievement and it should be easy enough for us veterans!) I just played using the new camera relative control option. The new mouse controls were handy now and again for quickly moving around the larger scenes.

I was made up to see nearly 100 of Peter Chan's original sketches available for viewing too. There's many scenes that were never used and it's great to have all of these together at last. They're wonderful.

I've heard a few people mention bugs and in some cases they've said it was unplayable but I didn't have any such issues. There was a minor point in the casino in year 4 where Manny's head disappeared for a minute or two! But apart from that I didn't have any issues. It's been great.

I would have loved to have had the backgrounds redrawn but that would have been a massive job and to be honest, even after all these years they're still gorgeous!

Still on my first playthrough. Apparently I'm old and sensible now, so the days where I can play ten hours in a row is quite rare, and there was actually a puzzle in the second year I totally forgot.

But I think I'll follow Tall Guys example, and go though it with commentary and tank controls next time. Then I'll have an excuse for buying the steam version aswell :-) ... and if you want it, my steam account is "mortenengell"

A side note: Did any of you notice what happend, when you ask Olivia to read all of her poems? I do not recall that the screen suddenly went black, and turned around her, in the original version?
