Good point! It’s now fixed:

I guessed today's (Jan 3, 2025) Monkey Island tune 🎵 in 1 try.

If you have suggestions for improving the name of the tracks, let me know. The game should be about identifying the music, not about figuring out the right name. I already tried to add the location/island to most of them (if applicable).

Showing all the tracks from a game? And/or at least making the pattern match  so that if you type a - it matches everything beyond only to the track and not the game anymore. Two drop down lists (game and track)?

Maybe you had the page already open when I made the change? Worked for me.

I couldn't name today's (Jan 3, 2025) Monkey Island tune! .

What about showing all results instead of a maximum of 10? That should be easy to implement. You can always type '1', '2', 'curse', 'escape', or 'return' to filter the game. Those words don't usually appear on the rest of the name/description.

I think there is just an inherent difficulty here, like hearing a popular music song and not knowing what it’s called — you’re sort of just screwed.

I guess in that case you could still get points for naming the band, which in this case like you say could be naming the game it’s from. That is a bit iffy though because each game has a pretty recognisable musical style so doesn’t count for an awful lot.

I really agree with your last point as in my case I rarely had doubts about which game the music was from, but rather which area it was from. So maybe not worth awarding points to that as it would be true for most of the cases.

change the behaviour of the Guess button if you haven’t entered anything yet to either do nothing or just play.
Now it skips forward and plays the tune again. At first I even thought there was a bug, as it kept adding seconds with each replay 😅  only to realise I should scroll down further and push play instead.

That really counts as 1. I just wanted to listen to it again with the volume turned up.

Looking at the other posts here, timezones are confusing. Maybe having a unique number for each heardle would help?

That’s what the newly added date is for, but I can change it to an ID if that’s easier to understand/compare.

Good point! It's now fixed. I also fixed a crash when entering a single space.

I’m curious if the date/song indicator is correct — the songs seem to switch at 4 pm PT (midnight UK) but claims that’ll switch at midnight PT. So I’m wondering if it’s a server vs browser time discrepancy.

It’s all done locally using JS, the server isn't involved. I’m in the UK time zone so I never noticed, I’ll have a look at the time functions and fix the issue.

Edit: It’s now fixed! I was using the start date without entering the time, only the date. I think JS was assuming UTC in that case ie. "new Date('2024-12-25')" was setting start date to "2024-12-25 16:00" in PT. Thanks a lot for reporting as I would have never noticed because of my time zone.

Spoiler

Although the quality of the score is still great, the recycling of musical themes from the first two games in Return isn’t.

That’s how I usually do, but it doesn’t really work either. Even if you type something like “Escape from monkey island - island” it still shows you all the same 10 tracks as when you type “escape - island” or simply “escape”. The first two being “escape from monkey island - Option screen” and …. - End credits” or something without a second island in there. All the rest is on melee island, so you can’t use it if you try to remember how to spell Yambajala or what that island starting with an “L” was again.

It now shows up to 60 search results. Let me know if that helps.

This change has a negative side effect though. Scrolling on the page is more tricky in case the combobox popup is open. If you try to scroll over the popup to scroll the page you'll have to scroll first the search results until they reach the end to finally be able to scroll the page. Shouldn't be too annoying I hope.

Spoiler

I somehow got it in my head that it was related to the Brimstone Beach from Curse...

Also this is yet another sign I should replay Return, or even all the MI games. If only there was some sort of long break period coming up which would make such a replay easy...

Also, since we're talking about improvements, how hard would it be to add a volume slider? I know audio stuff in software can be more complicated than it seems.

And thanks for all the improvements you've already made!

Adding a volume slider would be easy, but it would only allow for reducing the volume, not increasing it. The volume is already set to 1, which is the maximum allowed by the device's current volume setting. As far as I’m aware, making it louder can't be achieved via JavaScript for the `Audio()` function, and rightfully so, because it could lead to some undesirable scenarios.

What purpose do you need a volume slider for? I would prefer to keep the design as simple as possible. The volume can be controlled via the device's keys or buttons, which are usually easily accessible.

I was watching a stream while playing, and the music was far louder than the stream.

But yeah, keeping things simple is fair, and I should probably not try to listen to two things at once.
