SlowbieOne
It doesn't look like Cable modem or DSL will be available in my area anytime soon:( I'll lose my mind if I have to wait forever to play JK2 online. I'll be able to play my friends on a network, but I can only go so far with that... What I would like to know is if any of you Satellite users out there play Quake3 based games online. If so, how is it compared to Cable or DSL. From what I have been told, it's a mixed bag. However, even if it's not as good as DSL or Cable, I will probably get it if JK2 is at least "playable". Should I stick it out and wait for Cable or DSL, or is Satellite sufficient? If so, any good recommendations for a good Satellite modem company? Thanks, any help is appreciated. digl
I think it all depends on the ISP you are talking about a WLL connection or satellite? Im not sure but I think satellite may have higher pings
Vagabond
I had a friend who looked into Satellite, and the people at the Sat. company told him if he was using it for gaming that he would be disappointed. While it is fairly fast, there is also a very noticeable delay (read lag) involved before the data starts to transfer. Like a second or two. At least that's what this particular Satellite company had to say.
Agen
Well from experience, sat. is great for surfing but is nothing more than a good 56k for games. If u can get ISDN i'd get that but u gotta be prepared for high charges...
OnlyOneCanoli
Agreed... satellite ISP's are infamous for their poor pings in games. Surfing speeds are decent I hear, but the pings you get are comparable to those you'd get on dial-up. Sorry, man. I was in the same position as you a few months ago, hopefully your luck will change soon.
SlowbieOne
Thanks for the input guys. I figured as much They seriously have cable modem everywhere else in my town, except my street. I've been on the waiting list for AT&T cable modem for a year now. A few months ago I talked to them and they told me they had it, then I talked to a different guy later that week to set up an appointment and they didn't have it available. I think something's fishy... Once it gets down to crunch time you can bet I'll be paying a visit to the AT&T office.
matt--
go to the cable co website. Most times they'll have a site that will check to see if your eligible.

I was in that position too I had waited for cable for ages, I called to the ISP suuport number a hundred times, they always said something different when they finally started installing near where I live, they installed untill the building next to mine, and I had to wait even more time But I finally got cable!!!! The Seeker
If you want a great deal on DSL, qwest.net had a deal a while back where if you were listed as a business in the white pages, you get a business deal on DSL for $20 bucks a month. The only down side is that after two hours of being conected, it disconnects for five minutes before you can reconnect. Great deal though. And the modem was free. OnlyOneCanoli
No, no, no. Don't get Qwest. I have a friend (internet friend), Jade Skyhiker who posts here once in a blue moon. It's horrible. You can't play a lot of LEC games (JK, GBG, etc.). At least she can't... I'd highly suggest getting several opinions on Qwest before signing up with them. I was in a similar situation you are in. Cable was on my street, but not my house. I had to call the cable company (Adelphia) about a million times before they got out here and set me up. And then they didn't bury the cable that day; it was promptly destroyed by the Lawnmower of Doom on the next day. But nevertheless, they buried it, and I love it. StormHammer
For those in the UK, like me, who are still waiting for ADSL and cable to arrive in your area, there may be a little ray of hope... I just read an article in Computer Shopper magazine, and here's a little snip... Source: Computer Shopper, Feb 2002 Rooftop Radio to rival ADSL A new radio network promises fast broadband connections to rival existing cable and ADSL installations. The aerial system, which will be tested in Cardiff [Wales] in the New Year, will bring broadband to users who cannot use [read it's not available ] cable.... ...Mesh radio...will initially allow users to surf the internet and achieve download speeds of 4 mbits/s, enabling other broadband services such as video on demand. The technology has the potential [for]...speeds up to 25 mbits/s... ...licenses for operating commercial systems in [the 28-40Ghz] frequency band are currently being offered for auction. The bidding process doesn't conclude until October 2002. That's about the crux of it. The first thing to note is...why conduct such a trial in Cardiff...unless you are not really planning to introduce ADSL into most of Wales, and probably a lot of other regions with similar topographical factors? That is what really comes to my mind, so the probability of me getting hooked up to ADSL at the moment still equals a big fat zero. On the other hand, if this new system could be proven feasible, and if there are no real issues around initial lag, this could be a viable alternative. Of course, there is no indicator at this time of how much such a system would cost...though I suspect it would probably be more than ADSL. There is also no indication of timescale for rollout if proven effective...so I guess I'll still have to play the waiting game - or simply move house. thrEEpaGe
hmm........strange.......but, if it is anything at all like fixed wireless, prices will be comparable (maybe less, im not sure) to adsl....it has a decent radius (bigger than dsl's but speeds still diminish over distances).....but its much better than adsl! if you can get that and dsl, choose that =)
ed_silvergun
StormHammer and anyone else who's having problems getting broadband... I totally sympathise with you. I'm in Kent (south-east England) which is almost completely covered by cable and ADSL services. Except... within a radius of about 50 yards of my house. If you look on a broadband coverage map of Kent, you can see a sea of colour all across the county, and this little island of white just round where my house is. There's no reason... I'm in the suburbs of a reasonably sized towm, in a fairly urban area... I'm not in a valley, or halfway up a mountain, and there's far smaller places near me which are broadband-enabled. As such, I'm stuck on a paltry 56k modem, with a crap BT phoneline, and get an average connection speed of about 24-26.4k. Surfing is just about possible, but playing games online is a nightmare... so much so that I had to give up playing C-S online a while back because my pings were so poor. Imagine what JK II is going to be like!
NeJJa
In my area, DSL is going to be available (according to BellSouth) about a month after JK2 is released (according to Raven ). That will be a baaaaad month yep yep, im talking about having the shakes bad.

Imagine what JK II is going to be like! I feel your pain, ed. I have to say my connection is a bit better than that for surfing, but I do suffer from escalating ping in a lot of games. I'm going to try JKII online, but I'm not holding out much hope.
