linux?

It seems to be an endless cycle, unfortunately: Games won't be ported to Linux since it isn't popular enough. But Linux won't become popular 'cause you can't play games with it.

Personally, if I didn't play games, I'd use linux. I'm pretty tired of this Microsoft Windows :swear: .

Yeppers, Loki tanked and there whent a huge part of the future of linux gaming. If linux has a future as a gaming client then it is in running WINE, transgaming, or if companies choosing to port it themselves.

Yep, I kinda think of LEC as being in the grip of M$ and I don't see them being zealout about releasing the binaries that you would been to get your win JK2 cd to work with linux. Nor would I ever expect to see an official LEC linux version of JK2.

What I do expect (and hope) to see would be a dedicated server for linux. I myself am thinking about using some spare bandwith and running a WD JK2 server. I'd definately use linux for that.

Ok Windows could be better. But it is extremely hard to create an operating system with the funcionality that Windows has. It has to work on millions of different computers with different hardware configurations. Linux is totally inept when it comes to compatibilty.

Though linux seems to be the preferred operating system to run game servers on.

Anyone love Medal of Honor? Well i do, but theres no linux server version of it. Some game server companies (WIREPLAY an Australian game server supplier) won't even consider creating a server on a windows 2000 operating system. I'd hate to see the same thing happen when Jk2 comes out.

Yea........Windows is much more versatile than Linux.......if windows was just meant to run on one type of computer with exactly the same hardware confirguration each time then there would be no bugs and the software would be better.........but it has to run on thousands of combinations of hardware :(

The thing is that it's too expensive and the ROI (return on investment) is too low for companies to train all their employees in linux and then spend the extra dev time to write games for linux as well. Of course, when you're using a openGL engine such as the Q3 engine, it's not that hard but using directx for windows would require complete reprogramming into OpenGL for it to work with linux.

Linux isnt as versatile as Windows? I think you are totaly wrong! Linux runs on everything which has a CPU. PC, Mac, IBM-Server, RISC-Systems, Playstation, Handhelds/PDAs and so on. Are you sure, Linux isnt working in you washing-machine? ;)

Linux-Nativ-Games are running smooth! Quake 3 is a bit faster than on Windows if you use NVidia-Hardware.

The Porting of an Quake3-based game isnt hard! One man of id-software did this in only a few days with Return to Castle Wolfenstein in his spare-time!!

The Linux-market is growing and growing and... There ARE very popular games out there for example: Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, RtC-Wolfenstein, Civ Call to Power, Sim City 3000 and so on. The next (?) upcoming highlight is "Neverwinter Nights" which is actually in development for Windows AND Linux!

You see, it is possible, the market is there (and will be growing much faster, with more popular games) and the Linux-Community will be very pleased to play Jedi Knight 2!!

So please LEC, do the port!

PS: Please excuse my english! ;)
