ThirdGenRX7
I was watching ESB the other night and Obi Wan says like 5 times that he was instructed by Yoda. However, according to Episode one it was Qui Gon who instructed him? What's up w/ that?
Master-Josue
That's easy! GEORGE LUCAS changed his mind and included Qui-Gon-Jin as well as JANGO FETT and possibly Mace Windu into the New Trilogy. He is the creator of Star Wars and he can do the changes he thinks he need for HIS films story. There are several DISCREPANCIES between the Original TRilogy and the new films but hey no body is perfect And any way mostly all of them can be validated with some silly excuse. For example maybe OBi-Wan had taken teachings from Yoda before Qui-gon. Remember in Ep2 yoda teaching a class to little kids? Master-Josue
Emon
Actually, no. Obi-Wan had both Qui-Gon and Yoda as his master. Yoda instructs EVERYONE, he's kind of an overseer. Qui-Gon is the one who actually goes into detail teaching his students. BTW, wrong forum.

OnlyOneCanoli
Hehe, don't worry about it. The right forum is Yoda's Swamp, which is our off topic/anything goes forum. Valley of the Jedi is for JKII discussion only.

acdcfanbill
plus it was easier to say yoda, then luke figgures out yoda later on... if he had said qui gon, then he woulda had to go into this huge story about how he died, and obi had to kill maul, and the double sabres, and that would have just ruined it when george wanted to make eps1... so he instead took the simple route, and said yoda... see, perfectly simple... Jedi_Monk
Yes, Yoda oversees the instruction of every young Jedi until they were 13, at which point they become Padawan to a Knight to get experience in the field. Yoda did instruct Obi-Wan, and besides, Qui-Gon was dead so Obi-Wan couldn't much tell Luke to go to him. You can see signs of what happened in Return of the Jedi when Obi-Wan is telling Luke the truth (finally). "I took it upon myself to train him [Anakin] as a Jedi. I thought that I could teach him as well as Yoda... I was wrong..." So, we know from TPM that Anakin was too old to start from scratch with Yoda, and that Yoda wouldn't accept him. The only way Anakin would receive training would be if he went straight to Padawan. Obi-Wan took Anakin as his Padawan according to Qui-Gon's last request, but against Yoda's wishes. Thus, Anakin never received the fundamental training that Yoda gives--and therefore, Obi-Wan had to teach him all those things that Yoda taught the other Jedi trainees. So Obi-Wan thought he could train him as well as Yoda, and was wrong. It all fits together.
techsurfer
As I understand it Qui-Gon just did on-field training as Obi-Wan grew up and was ready for some real action. Yoda teaches all the new padawan's the way's of the force - the basics etc whereas Qui-Gon got Obi-Wan to refine his use and enforce the Jedi code! The whole training process is slightly elusive since when Anakin was a boy in TPM Obi-Wan said he would take Anakin on as his padawan but Yoda has a class of kids about the same age as Jake Lloyd's Anakin, so I don't exactly get how students are assigned and trained . Maybe even George Lucas hasn't sorted it out!
techsurfer
Just had another thoughy Yoda said that Dooku was his Padawan but Dooku's only 80 (I assume) and Yoda has been teaching Jedi for 800 years so how come he took Dooku on as his padawan since he must have still been head of the council back then when Dooku was first recognised as 'gifted'! Any ideas?
acdcfanbill
yea, cause yoda told dooku that he though obi was gifted, or that he thought highly of him so then i guess jedi can take padawans even while members of the coucil, and not necessarly out and about doin jedi stuff... Jedi_Monk
A Jedi does not become a Padawan until they're apprenticed to a Jedi Knight or Master. The way I understand it, Jedi rank goes like so: Youngling, Padawan, Jedi Knight, Jedi Master... The Bear Clan (the kids Yoda was teaching) were about Anakin's age, but they had been training probably since they could form a coherant thought, whereas Anakin hadn't had any training before that at all. And there's nothing stopping a Jedi Council member can take on a Padawan.
txa1265
There was a lot about this in the 'Jedi Apprentice' book #1 (read it to my son). It states that a learner needs to be chosen as a Padawan by the time he is 13 or he does not have a chance to become a Jedi Knight. His force use will be put to other purposes - like Librarian, or assisting in non-dangerous farm duties. Obi-Wan, though strong in the Force, was impulsive and reckless, and had a bit of temper he had to work hard to control. Qui-Gon chose him soom before he turned 13 - Yoda oversaw all of the younger pre-Padawan training. Mike
