not really the best... i know a guy who has an OC3 connection in college.

That's about 500 mbps down, 500 mbps up pretty much.

There really isn't anything faster. :p

I go cable now. It is worth evey penny I pay for it. I forgot what life was like before cable. I used to be able to shower and eat breakfast during the time it took to dial up.......then I would get bumped off.....those days are long gone, and not missed at all.

Preach it Brother!!!

Ok looks like people don't have a first clue about anything concerning connections except a little minority...

DSL = Stable Cable, yes it runs through your telephone but the ISP makes sure that it's a separate connection (another modem completely), which means it won't interfeir with your normal connection (ie, 56k runs OFF your telephone, so if you don't have a dual line, you won't be able to use the telephone) and that being, you won't have any trouble with your connection dropping or some **** like that, which goes on regulary with the cable...

Cable = Not Stable, one minute it can be off the caps, and higher than what the tel. company said (thats great, never seen it last more than one night, and then dropping for 3 days just to "BALANCE OUT"), and the next minute (or 3 months) it can lose the upload COMPLETELY due to technical glitches or if not, again the caps can be off, and it will be lower than what tele company said...and you can't do **** about it, because thats how it goes...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

on a personal note

I've got cable...can't wait to switch on a t1...10mb down and up...not this pessy **** of 1mb download (and it's considered an upgrade  )[real about 80kbps=should be about 150kbps] and upload of 256 [real about 20kbps=should be about 40kbps].

Dunno about you. But I like my cable.

I have had cable connectivity since the beginning of January of this year and it has only been down twice. caps? I think not. I regularly get in the range of 1mbps (100 kb/sec) to 2 mbps (200 kb/sec) or higher down and 48 - 60 kb/sec up.

Just for the recored my service is Road Runner. Never been more happier with my connection.

the problem with cable is : you share bandwidth with your neighbors

(your connection speed can vary, according to the whims of other people)

the advantage to DSL is : your bandwidth is dedicated

therefore , for gaming in particular , DSL is "better"

Yep, that pretty much sums it up

Close, but...

DSL travels through a different section of the phone line. 56k is dial-up, DSL is not.

A problem with CABLE: cable servers don't have the bandwith that DSL servers have. Plus some networking HUBS have been having problems with certain types of cable routers.

Metaphor: DSL is like an Aircraft carrier while CABLE is like a destroyer. Some cable servers run faster, but if too many users are abord, there is mass LAG! DSL has a much higher bandwith and doesn't suffer from these problems.

Whichever is cheaper.

Well, pretty close considering that I don't have cable of DSL...

Still living on dial up. :(

Time to further clear up the DSL/cable myths...

DSL runs over your standard copper phone line at a higher frequency than voice traffic. The problem with running the data at a higher frequency is you run into more issues due to signal attenuation & crosstalk with other lines in the same and adjacent line binders. 2 things will affect DSL speed/quality:

1) The quality of your local phone lines from your phone jack to your LEC's DSLAM. If you have your phone cable run over the street & it regularly gets run over by tractors or you have a birds nest growing inside your local pedestal then yeah youll get crappy internet.

2) The speed limitations imposed by your LEC's DSLAM &/or ISP's routers. DSL can xfer at 8mbit/s if your local loop is of the right length & quality. To get it that well you'll need to live right across the street from your CO or something. :) Since the ISP's sell tiered speed services unless they want to lose money they'll chop your bandwidth at the router or have the LEC do it at the DSLAM.

As for cable I can't be too specific (I used to work for a CLEC, but had cable internet service at the time), but I know that cable bandwidth is shared in your local neighbourhood. At my old apt complex all my neighbours used cable, so therefore at peak times our service REALLY sucked. At least with DSL your local loop is a dedicated loop. :)

It's unfair to say ones better than the other. It all depends on your neighbourhood, your distance from the CO, your ISP, your LEC, lots of stuff. Whats best is to ask around. Talk to your neighbours, read the forums at dslreports.com, read USENET & junk. Whew. Rant off. :D

  • 3 weeks later...

I know this thread is old but I am wondering something.

Do you need to have Cable tv for cable access? Like do you have get the channels and stuff or can you just get a cable modem and pay for that and the service? I run a 56k and I know that Dsl isn't up here yet but do you get Cable as long as you have Cable tv or do you have to wait for them to install something before it work's?

Also how much does it usually cost?

I know this is a dumb question but I want to know cause I am tired of using a 56k! :(

My cable has no firewall since I installed it myself,

Has the best ping in alot of servers, even on laggy ones I can still play decently cause I've got the most below average ping.

My friends get pissed off when we play CS on an unfortuneately laggy server and they've all got ISDn and laggy DSL while I'm getting the lower of the pings on the server :) .

In a literal world you dont need to order cable TV to get cable internet. In todays world of big deals and marketing and whatnot depending on your cable providor you may have to order cable tv to get the internet service. It's best to call up your cable providor and ask.
