QueZTone Posted August 19, 2002 Posted August 19, 2002 okay im in the middle of a monkey island marathon in which im replaying all games in chronological order... well...im 3/4th through the marathon and here's my recent feelings towards MI1,2 and 3.. Secret of Monkey Island Fun: classic Humor: perfect Story: original Art style: wonderful Ending: Satisfying Conclusion: It still feels great. LeChuck's Revenge Fun: classic Humor: perfect Story: amazing (lot of islands, very good!) Art style: best yet Ending: Philosphying Conclusion: Best mi-game yet with SMI closely behind. Places like Woodtick are just unforgetable. Curse of Monkey Island Fun: okayish Humor: quite good Voice Acting: perfect Story: good, though too many plot holes Art style: not right for mi, but nice nontheless Ending: Really bad Conclusion: I liked the cutscenes a lot. What's up with that dinghy dog? That's way overdone. Carnival of the Damned in CMI? Blegh stupid. Escape of Monkey Island - [no comments yet, still have to re-play it, starting now] what the point of this thread is? I have no idea. But if you recently replayed any of the games, feel free to speak up about your feelings towards the games here
Remi Posted August 19, 2002 Posted August 19, 2002 I have mixed feelings about the visual style of CMI. Background wise I think it's without a doubt the better looking game of the four - it's similar to MI2, yet has it's own individual style. Characters... I don't mind the fact that they're cartoony, but some of them look kinda wrong, especially Guybrush, Elaine and LeChuck. I wish they had stuck to something a bit more similar to what they did in MI2. Then again, that's just my personal opinion.
Hellbeard Posted August 19, 2002 Posted August 19, 2002 What ever, MI1 will always still be my favorite! My favorite MI games in this order! MI1 MI2 MI3 MI4 Originally posted by RemiO Characters... Junior™ Posted August 19, 2002 Posted August 19, 2002 I guess my order will be this one: CMI LCR SOMI EMI But I love all of them so it might change soon...
QueZTone Posted August 20, 2002 Author Posted August 20, 2002 I agree with you Remi. Guybrush isn't some cartoony looking figure.. at least in EMI he looks human again also the outfit of Guybrush in CMI sucked big time.. anyway im in the middle of EMI and i think i like it more than CMI after all, despite of the major plotholes it has a more fun and diverse story and some other pros over CMI mi2 and mi1 gfx rocked them all!
QueZTone Posted August 20, 2002 Author Posted August 20, 2002 There. I finished re-playing EMI and therefore completed the MI marathon. Hmm so finally my comments to EMI.. Curse of Monkey Island Fun: yeah Humor: 'okay' Voice Acting: perfect Story: waaaaaaay too many plot holes (unforgivable) Art style: nice change, too much smurf town though Ending: Really good for the game it is Conclusion: I liked the cutscenes a lot. Though the H.T. plotholes are unforgivable, as is the Jojo Sr. thing. Jambalaya sucks, tourists suck, the giant robot sucks, monkey kombat sucks, hmm.. but overall i think its a better game than CMI
Remi Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 Overall I did like EMI more than CMI, which may or may not be because I don't care about the plot holes (it's Monkey Island, not Shakespeare), but anyway, yes MI2 0wnz all.
Benny Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 My feelings towards EMI have been voiced on many occasions - I dont like it at all. I am however, extremely fond of MI 1,2 and 3 with MI2 of course being the best. To sum up my feelings towards EMI (rather than having my usual EMI rant post) I dislike it for many of the reasons that I disliked LOTR when I first saw it at the cinema - it doesnt live up to the original(s), contorts and distorts the pure original vision and adds some new daft bits. Ok perhaps that wasnt the best analogy after all
QueZTone Posted August 20, 2002 Author Posted August 20, 2002 agreed. btw that Church of LeChuck and the whole lava thing on Monkey Island left me with a dirty aftertaste though...Monkey Island should be a true paradise! Rivers, trees, bays, beaches and an INACTIVE volcano I didn't really like the particular 'LeChuck Church and Lava puzzle' and that Viewpoint puzzle was just insane. Oh well. we all agree on the emi cutscenes being beautiful i hope? One of the best scenes are the moment Guybrush says "Oh yeah? Well you fight like a cow!" to LeChuck who just walked out of the Mansion. And that other cutscene where first LeChuck 'Bwahahahahaha's' and then Ozzie does it too, and then Guybrush too, that was uber-funny imo.
Remi Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 I'd also like to add that that I feel EMI was treated kinda unfairly by some. I mean, say what you want about it being a bad Monkey Island game or whatever, but it was at the very least a very good adventure game, and a funny one at that. I think a lot of people have just decided not to see anything positive in it at all, which is kinda sad. It's a fun game to play whichever way you look at it.
QueZTone Posted August 20, 2002 Author Posted August 20, 2002 yeah if you sqeeuze your eyes and look past the plotholes, EMI is really a humorous adventure game Again, i loved the cutscenes and the story had mine side stories etc.

I thought Guybrush looked great, Elaine looked great and even LeChuck looked great. EMI sucked serious ass.
Hi-Jinx Posted August 21, 2002 Posted August 21, 2002 I can understand why someone would dislike EMI the first time around, it took me 2 times to get the hang of it because I couldn't get past the mysts of tyme the 1st time around. ^^; IMO, I thought EMI was brilliant. Sure, the controls leave your thumbs begging for a rest and massage, but they'll probably make the controls a little easier the next time they make an MI sequal. I love the extra little goodies you get in the game, like the FMV cutscene playbacks. I even liked the Church of LeChuck. Even though he didn't get much mention during the 1st disc. It sure as heck made up for it in on the 2nd. As for plotholes, if you take the time to piece all the jigsaw together, it actually makes sense in parts. I'm pro-EMI, it's just a shame people still continue to be biast towards it. ;(
Governor Phatt Posted August 21, 2002 Posted August 21, 2002 To be honest, i thought EMI was ok, it kinda worked as a MI game, i don't think it was as bad as people have made it.... although it did try to spend too much time with Cameo's, and the humour just wasn't right. CMI, i like much better and i think its a lot longer than EMI. I was really shocked at how quickly i arrived at Monkey island, especially in comparison to CMI, where i prolly spent something like 2 weeks trying to solve that bloody Blondebeard/bubblegum/gold tooth puzzle. The only things that annoyed me about CMI was the ending (from the rollercoaster of death onwards) I do agree that EMI's cutscenes were brilliant, and the end was a bit more satisfying. I don't hate EMI, even as a MI game, i just prefer CMI.... Or MI2, Which is the best
Hi-Jinx Posted August 21, 2002 Posted August 21, 2002 Some good points there, Phatt. But do you really think CMI was longer? The longest puzzle in that for me was getting stuck in the quicksand. (Stop laughing at me) I agree with you about the ending, after LeChuck going on with himself like a blithering ijit, the rollercoaster of death was a bit dissapointing. I hope we get more FMV cutscenes in the next game. I thought they were honestly wicked. Also, is it just me or does LeChuck sound more ambiguous and arrogant in EMI while in CMI he sounded more angry and forceful. *Wonders if she'll ever get to see an FMV shower scene of LeChuck* ........ Stop looking at me like that!! *Crys*
Governor Phatt Posted August 21, 2002 Posted August 21, 2002 Well when i say it was longer i mean it took me me longer to finish it. I completed EMI in about two or three days, while CMI it took me ages... I thought LeChuck in CMI Was a bit cartoony and silly. He wasn't nearly as evil as he was in the first two... but he was still kinda Lechuck. In EMI they did the same to him as they did to Guybrush, and just made him plain stupid. I wanna see Uber-Evil Lechuck again ALA MI2... And I think Lechuck in the shower would be gross *hahaha* (although if it was Elaine from EMI...) *ahem*
Remi Posted August 21, 2002 Posted August 21, 2002 I doubt you'll be seeing a lot of pre-rendered cut-scenes in the next Monkey Island game(s). The trend now seems to be making everything as interactive as possible, something I know big names/teams like Tim Schafer, Team Silent (Silent Hill designers) and (I believe) Sean Clark have mentioned. With the quality of ingame graphics catching up with pre-rendered scenes it kinda makes sense really - the EMI cut-scenes would be even cooler if they were interactive.

Junior™ Posted August 22, 2002 Posted August 22, 2002 Hmmm, actually I needed quite the same time for each of the games...okay, I cannot count in SOMI and LCR since I was 6/7 and my brother helped me.
Governor Phatt Posted August 23, 2002 Posted August 23, 2002 Its crazy cos my mum plays them too, and when she finds a puzzle hard, its one that i found really easy.... and vice versa. People just have different ways of thinking about puzzles. Which is also why people have varied opinions on EMI's length, its nothing to do with how good the game is....
