There are plenty of holidays you don't get off... It's amazing how Christian holidays are the only ones that are observed in America:rolleyes:

Well, we are

One nation under God

That might have something to do with it. *shrugs*

The only reason I get this day off is because it's Saturday. But there are plenty of holidays in the US that have nothing to do with Christianity. Like vetrans day, memorial day, martin luther king jr day, presidents day, etc that give us another excuse for an extra day off every month.

Yea... but whatever happened to separation of church and state? And what about equal protection of the law? Why should Christians get federal holidays, but not Jews or Muslims (Granted, they're normally allowed to take them off, but it's not an official observance) Jews and Muslims still get Christmas off, even though they're not Christian

I know it'd be a pain in the ass to manage observances for all the religions and whatnot.. but it's still quirky the way it is

But lets think about it most holidays are stupid, Columbus Day, yeah celebrate the beginning of the oppresion of the Native Americans, the Vikings were the first to discover America not Columbus. Thanksgiving celebrates the puritans coming to America not for religious freedom but for a strict puritan society and again the oppresion of the Native Americans, the Puritans did everything they could to get rid of the native americans. Come on Thanksgiving was started in I think the 1920's. And the list goes on and on.

The reason that so many christian holiday are observed as national holidays and not other religions is because alot of the people coming to the thirteen colonies in America were christians religions who wanted their own haven with their own rules. Those of other religions were not the majority. So now when there is seperation of church and state their are already christian holidays set up as national holidays. The reason they are kept is because the majority of Americans observe them and wouldn't be working any way. It would be nice to have official holidays of other religions, but it seems that most newer holidays are political and not religious.

Actually FYI, this is a quote from the History Channel site...

Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving Day, national holiday in the United States commemorating the harvest reaped by the Plymouth Colony in 1621, after a winter of great starvation and privation. In that year Gov. William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving, and the feast was shared by all the colonists and the neighboring Native Americans. Although similar observances were held locally, they were sporadic and at no set time. After the American Revolution the first national Thanksgiving Day, proclaimed by George Washington, was Nov. 26, 1789. Abraham Lincoln, urged by Sarah J. Hale, revived the custom in 1863, appointing as the date the last Thursday of November. In 1939, 1940, and 1941 Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed Thanksgiving the third Thursday in November. When a contradiction arose between Roosevelt's proclamation and some of those of state governors, Congress passed a joint resolution in 1941 decreeing that Thanksgiving should fall on the fourth Thursday of November. The day is observed by church services and family reunions; the customary turkey dinner is a reminder of the four wild turkeys served at the Pilgrims' first thanksgiving feast.

As to answer about Seperation between church and state, It was like that for a reason. It was not seperating God from the Government, It was seperating Government from God. That way, the government can have no say in what religion you are.

As for the equal protection under the law, I don't know why you threw that in, we are talking about holidays here. ;)

As for Christians getting federal holidays, we are not the only ones who get them. There is a Veterans day, Martin Luther King Jr. day, and all that stuff that the very wise Old_Ben said.

;)
