The future of computer games?

What do you reckon the future of video games will be?

I have an idea for a game,

How about gran turismo on a huge scale? you know, you can drive anywhere in the virtual world with every road on earth open to be used for racing your souped up ferraris and aston martins. you will be able to hook up with your buddies and race the winding roads of the pyrenees or steam around paris at 120mph, you would be able to race your buddies then go and park up in an underground car park and chat. A game like that would keep me absorbed for sooooo long. I'd never go to work again.

are there any games or gametypes that you think would be fantastic when the technology is ready for it?

post your game ideas and who knows it may happen.

Hmmm...funny you should mention this. There's an interesting article here that discusses what is next for the game engine.

I have to agree with a lot of what the article says. The graphic envelope is already being pushed...we're now seeing better quality within the game engine than many of the pre-rendered cut scenes we were watching five years ago. So I'd expect that trend to continue, with ever-more-realistic lighting and realistic textures to bring game worlds to life.

As you sort of outlined above...the ability of engines to render ever larger and more complex worlds will also become a reality. There are already some games on the market with huge playing areas and more freeform terrain...like Operation Flashpoint, Project IGI (which uses a flight sim engine in order to increase the terrain size)...and next year we'll get STALKER: Oblivion Lost, which will have a huge 20km playing field to run around in.

Actually, STALKER will have some of the elements you speak of...complete freedom to go where you want, when you want. AFAIK there is still a story, and some areas will be initially locked until you get the right equipment (such as environment suits) to be able to enter them...but essentially you should be a free agent within the gaming world. So I would hope to see that kind of trend continue, and a move away from the linearity of game design. Sometimes, you won't be able to get away from linearity...particularly if you are talking about the Max Payne type scenario, which is more of an interactive movie. DOOM III also seems to be going down the heavily-scripted linear story route, and there will still be room for that.

I just prefer being able to wander around, explore, and do pretty much what I want to - as long as my objectives remain clear, and the game reminds you of these, and how to go about them, so you don't simply get lost.

AI is another area that should improve radically over the next few years, and personally I believe they should now start contemplating AI standards, including a scripting language or series of algortihms, that can be applied in a similar way to the real-time physics engines that have recently been incorporated in games. There seems to be a lot of 'reinventing the wheel' going on, with developers working in isolation to develop AI for their games...when so much of that knowledge could be shared, amalgamated, and developed to produce a universal feature-set.

Taking that a step further, once such standards are established, I see no reason why hardware could not be phased in to cope with complex AI and physics calculations. Much of this process is currently undertaken by the CPU...which in real terms means that you need ever faster CPUs to cope with the demands. This leaves many gamers out in the cold, because they are unable to continually upgrade. It would make more sense to me if someone actually developed a separate card that you could plug into your PC, in a similar way to a sound or graphics card.

It may not be as far-fetched as it sounds...I remember a long time ago when the first sound cards were being developed...and people were saying 'Why on earth do we need another piece of hardware to cope with sound?' and 'Why do we need MIDI music?' And look where we are today.

Also, AI hardware could be utilised in mainstream work, such as simulations and other business processes.

The crux of my point is that virutal worlds should seem more real in the near future...with bustling city streets full of virtual people...instead of the almost barren virtual-scapes of current and older games. I mean, if you remember the original Jedi Knight...it had a few human pedestrians dotted around...but it was supposed to be a busy city, teeming with alien life. In the future, that vision should be realised, and gaming worlds will be the better for it.

And now I've talked enough. *rings LOUD BUZZER to wake everyone up* ;)

More importantly...where do you get it?

It's not listed at Amazon...and they're usually quite good at listing titles.

A link would be appreciated. :)

Or a basic synopsis. :D

As far as FPS games I think the next step is fully realistic environmental consequences of batlle. For instance if you use too much explosive power inside a room it will eventually collaps on you. Rockets put holes in the ground and bullets shred walls and doors. Dont throw that grenade in here it will destroy that collumn supporting the ceiling and well all die! Eventually well be fighting outside cause the whole building will be leveled. :D "Rocket whores" will be finally be obsolete when they pull this off. You hop around firing rockets, if the blast radius doesnt kill you first, the now unstable power generator or the caving in walls will.:joy:

My friends, the future of computer gaming..no the future of star wars lies in STAR WARS GALAXIES

Considering the fact that thousands of NPCS flood the streets of every city, and the fact that thousands of human users are running around doing stuff....

Well..that's a big overwhelming isnt it :p
