Darklighter
Now this might sound like a very strange question (thinking about how you think...confusing >_< lol), but I had this particular discussion in my General Studies class this week. We were debating about how people think, whether they use images, language, a bit of both. We also played this game whereby the teacher would read out a list of objects, and afterwards write down as many as you could remember. This asked how you remember things in your mind. It might be a bit of an odd topic, but do you guys have any opinions on it? How do you think?

This isn't a flame merely a correction. Very good thread Darklighter. I like to think with words. I rarely use images in my mind and am not very good at the memorizing objects game. I use images basically if I am thinking of a place. But I mostly like to use words. And when I deal with the problems I faced in the day while lying in bed at night I see words in my mind as I am thinking them and sometimes use images to replay what happened in the day. It is very hard to explain how one thinks as I believe it is unique for everyone and everyone thinks their own special way.
mercatfat
It depends. For the most part, I'm a picture person. I have a very photographic memory and tend to remember the face before a name. Personal History, on the other hand, I tend to associate with smell and sound. I like to get a CD before doing something important because I'll always remember it by that music. Darklighter
I sensed the sarcasm from a mile away:)lol I usually think with images, like when I need to remember a route to take somewhere, I always picture it in my head. Though I do use language as well, like when I need to justify a point. Also I remember things by sticking them in the back of my mind, then when I hear them, I recall them. I don't use image associations.
Dark Warrior
I wish I had your skill Darky, I am the most forgetful person you will ever meet. I will try to store something in the back of my mind but it never comes back to the front. I only use images to recall things from the day at night but other then that I'm lost. Like if I am out buying groceries, I can memorize the list. But if I am trying to memroize a map I easily get confused. It's very strange and quite hard to explain. Darklighter
Heh, it's funny the things you can remember and can't remember. I'm training to be an actor, and can memorise whole scripts in a matter of weeks or even days if need be. But come to remembering to give someone a message that someone phoned for them 5 minutes ago, and I'm hopeless lol
Lime-Light
Really, I use both. Im an artistic person, and very imaginative (Im constantly imagining a car wreck or a plane crash or a dinosour or aliens trashing the highway while I drive, or imagine a person morphng into an alien if they're boring to talk to) and I think of some wierd images some times. But on the other hand, I'm an author of sorts, and I think in terms of words a lot. A third way to think is in terms of relationships and parallels, like in math (mathematicians dont think in numbers, they think in patterns and similarities). Luc Solar
I forget names. I can barely remember my own. I never forget numbers. Never. I'm very analytical and systematic in my thinking. I think all the time about a number of things. If someone wants to ask me something, they'll probably have to do it twice and then I'll go: "Huh? Did you say something?". I'm always 'preoccupied'. At nights I have to wait a minimun of 2 hours before I can fall asleep because my mind won't shut up. I wish it had an ON/OFF-button! Only if I'm really, really drunk can I fall asleep like normal people (lay down, close eyes --> fall asleep). But also while I sleep, I think. I solve many problems this way --> If something needs to be solved I take it to my sleep and when I wake up, the solution is right there. Doesn't work every time, though... JediNyt
Im more of a visual thinker myself. Thats just how my brain works. I have Tourette Syndrome so that makes things all the harder but I survive. Im too tired to go into much detail.
SettingShadow
How do I think?.... I think with images very often, like when I make up something in my mind, I allways use images to see everything. Im hopeless at remembering things, I go think of something I have to say to this person, I go into the room and then mumbles some and when I get to the point... its gone. When Im in bed and is trying to sleep my brain is going on like mad, I lay there at least 1 hour thinking up things and stuff, the night must be my brains most creative moment, lol. Anyway, I dont really know how I think when Im trying to remember a number or something, it just popes up in my mind. I often see someone on TV or somewhere and I think I´ve seen him before, it then popes up a foggy image of someone im my head, its this strange cause all I know is that its an image and I gotta be very concentrated to after 10 minutes see the picture, or sometimes it just remains a foggy image. I then have to remember the name... wich is just a pain for me and most times I dont even remember it... Is this what this thread was about? Darklighter
Yep:)It's just about how you thinkl in general. Very interesting to see what people have come up with. Something else that I found intriguing was how people picture the months of the year and days of the week in their minds. For instance, when I picture a week, I see it almost a circle, where the days keep going in a continuous cycle around each other, not like a calendar at all. How bout you guys? ShockV1.89
I dont really use images or words. I just... do. I dunno, it's like if I know something, I dont have to fight to remember it. I just know it, as if I'd just learned it. Of course, remembering it isnt always so easy. I talk to myself in my head sometimes, so I suppose that could be thinking in words...
