SlowbieOne
I have played many games from all genres in my life. I'd say at least 1,000. The games I haven't played, I at least know a bit about it. I try to keep up with all the games and info. There have been many great stories told in many great games, but if you had to choose 1 particular story that stands out above all, which would it be? Please, state your reasons why you choose that story. My choice is without a doubt XenoGears for Playstation. For those that don't know XenoGears is an RPG made by SquareSoft. I've never had such a feeling of fulfillment when playing a game. For the most part, I hate games where the main character you play as is a mute and doesn't say a word the whole game. Not only does the main character in XenoGears speak, but I'd say it's some of the biggest character development ever in a game. You really get to know the character intimately. Actually that goes for ALL the people in the game, they are all very charismatic and likeable. I wouldn't want to ruin any of the suprises for people that haven't played XenoGears, but the game coincides with and touches on the topic of the true origins of man and God something that is VERY RARELY done in games. It also touches on all kinds of topics related to real life, and even though the game takes place on a fantasy planet don't be fooled....it is meant to be Earth. To me, this is most rewarding thing to get out of a game. There are a billion other reasons why I think XenoGears story is ingenious, but i don't want to type for hours and hours on it, plus people that haven't played it wouldn't want me to spoil it. It gets deeper and deeper as you get into it.Let's just say it must've taken the game's writer, Masato Kato, years to write this complex story. As a lot of you may know, XenoSaga is coming out for PS2 next month. From what I've heard from Japanese reviews, XenoGears fans shan't be disappointed. For those that don't know, XenoSaga is actually the first of 6 episode in the series to be made, XenoGears being number 5, don't ask why they made that one first. The point is, there's a lot to look forward to here.... , at least for me. So in conclusion, if you are an RPG fan or not, if you're a fan of great stories in general, if you wanna play a game that will change your life and allow you to learn more about it at the same time, don't pass this game up. True some people can't stand RPG games for whatever reasons, but if you make one exception in your life, make XenoGears it. BTW, no I don't work for Square and no I'm not plugging XenoSaga. I'm just being honest.
nova_wolf
Well, your probably sick of me stating this fact, but it is important to note FFVII, that, and I REALLY need the points . All FF fans know the moments that make it the best game ever! Aeris... Sephiroth... Ruby and Emerald... If you wish to know of what i speak - go get FFVII - very worth the effort and hours. The game pulls you in to it, especially at the point of the loss of a dear friend. The subtle change in music in the preceeding battle adds to the fury and emotion felt by you as you take it personally and fight as if a fourth member of the team... And Sephiroth - not usualy enemy... He is someone you wish to save - stop, but save, as he has been warped by events - but then he goes to far, killing a close friend and burning a location of great meaning... FFVII - always and forever.
Kylilin
I agree FF VII takes the cake when it comes to video game storylines. So the real battle is for second place in my mind, and that would go to Metal Gear Solid.
CaptainRAVE
I think one of the most emotional story was Max Payne where his Baby Daughter and wife get killed. I cant think of an overall winner though
Katarn07
The Dark Forces/ Jedi Knight series is the FPS with the best story, IMO. X-Wing Alliance had good story for a flight sim, but the end was like... not there. But there are plenty of RPGs out there that outdo everything else. Baldurs Gate II: Shadows of Amn is my favorite. Can't wait for KotOR, though. That'll be great!

Lost Welshman
The Best Story for any game has to be the Monkey Island Series not many people (compared to jedi knight) know about it but it is a great series of games. It starts out really randomly, a guy with a ridiculose (sp?) name (Guybrush Threepwood) washes up on an island called Melee Island, and he decides to become a pirate. Then the story gets more complex. By the time i finished the second game I didnt think about another game, then they released another and it was even better, this time with cool cartoonish graphics. Then the fourth game came out (IN 3D) and that was really good too, although i didnt like the ending. The next game which they are making will be even better. For The best game with no sequals has to be the greatest Lucasgame (storywise) ever, Im talking about Grim Fandango About post below, Ive seen a Picture of Full THrottle 2 (Lucasarts) and the graphics are alot better than the (cartoon) 3d graphics in MI4, so im betting the Sam and Max 2 will have the luvable violent rabbit that we know and love in full 3D!!!! And yes they are making a MI5 game, I read it in an interview somewhere YES!!!!!!
Katarn07
They're making a 5th one?! Can't wait for Sam and Max 2. Hope its graphics are like MI4. That game was cool. My favorite thing about MI4 is: Rated T for TEEN for Use of Alchol and Tobacco, Comic Mishief.

Katarn07
I have Star Trek Generations and Armada II, and the best ST game I own, Bridge Commander. That has a good story to. Pre-Nemesis, post Inserrection, and you get to command two of the coolest classes: Galaxy and Soveriegn! as you face off Romulans, Vulcans, and a mysterious Foe. lukeskywalker1
the legend of zelda: ocarina of time! ive heard it was the best video game ever! mostly i play star wars games. Katarn07 said "X-Wing Alliance had good story for a flight sim, but the end was like... not there." i agree with u, first ur just a young pilote, then all of a sudden ur lando and blowing up the deathstar. that was pretty cool though. Bilbo Skywalker
im torn between FF 7 or Silent Hill 1 / 2. those games have serious, well thought out, deep, complex story lines with brilliant characterization, amazing plot twists, and genuine emotion. also worth a mention is Eiko, one of the most over-looked games ever... as above, but the story is fairly linear, doesnt have the twists of the other two i mentioned, but it is truly amazing, characters are deep, and the locations are beautiful. FF 7 i think for the championship.

The series was just a shootem' up game (which in itself at the time, being the first SW one, was very good) but it has evolved into much, much more. adillon
FULL THROTTLE: i just loved the whole idea of a taking on the persona of a biker gang leader. many tv shows and movies depict biker gangs as negative elements in the world, but to 'be' ben AND be the protagonist in the story was very successful, IMHO. plus i loved how the tusken raiders made a cameo appearance as one of the 'enemy' biker gangs in the game. leave it to lucasarts ... hmm, that gives me an idea. I forgot about Bridge Commander. Not only is the story awsome, but so is the game itself. The graphics are the best seen in a game of this type, especially of any Star Trek Game. And the power at your finger tips is incredible. However the story is very good considering all the twists and turns, its all very clever. I've probably forgotten most of the games I've played over the years though
Katarn07
The characters (except your #! who IMO is a very annoying person!) are great. I like the Bajoran girl at the helm, and the Bolian (??? Blue skinned guy) as the engineer. Data is classic Data and Picard helps you out once in the Enterprise, herself. Very well done indeed.

THATS WHAT THE TUSKAN RAIDERS LOOKED LIKE!!! ive been wondering where I had seen them before, from Full Throttle. By the Way Full Throttle 2 is due out this year in full georgous 3D. And Ben and his gang are all in it. I hope theres more destruction derby and bike fights.
