RpTheHotrod
The true meaning? On a dark desert highway Cool wind in my hair Warm smell of colitas Rising up through the air Up ahead in the distance I saw a shimmering light My head grew heavy, and my sight grew dim I had to stop for the night There she stood in the doorway I heard the mission bell And I was thinking to myself This could be Heaven or this could be Hell Then she lit up a candle And she showed me the way There were voices down the corridor I thought I heard them say Welcome to the Hotel California Such a lovely place Such a lovely place (background) Such a lovely face Plenty of room at the Hotel California Any time of year Any time of year (background) You can find it here You can find it here Her mind is Tiffany twisted She's got the Mercedes bends She's got a lot of pretty, pretty boys That she calls friends How they dance in the courtyard Sweet summer sweat Some dance to remember Some dance to forget So I called up the Captain Please bring me my wine He said We haven't had that spirit here since 1969 And still those voices are calling from far away Wake you up in the middle of the night Just to hear them say Welcome to the Hotel California Such a lovely Place Such a lovely Place (background) Such a lovely face They're livin' it up at the Hotel California What a nice surprise What a nice surprise (background) Bring your alibies Mirrors on the ceiling Pink champagne on ice And she said We are all just prisoners here Of our own device And in the master's chambers They gathered for the feast They stab it with their steely knives But they just can't kill the beast Last thing I remember I was running for the door I had to find the passage back to the place I was before Relax said the nightman We are programed to recieve You can check out any time you like But you can never leave Was looking around and found this: One of the top songs of the 70's was "Hotel California" by the Eagles. Most people have no idea the song refers to the Church of Satan, which happens to be located in a converted HOTEL on CALIFORNIA street. Some of the lyrics: "And in the master's chambers, They are gathered for the feast, They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast." Inside the album, looking down on the festivities, is none other than Anton Lavey, the founder of the Church of Satan and author of the Satanic Bible. The Eagles manager, Larry Salter, admitted in the Waco Tribune-Herald, (Feb. 28, 1982) that the Eagles were involved with the Church of Satan. Not surprisingly, one of the Eagles's songs is titled "Have A Good Day in Hell."{ and of corse... album title Hell frezze Over}. The song itself tells of him passing out on the road and dying. The warm smell of colitas is a drink, and he passes out drunk...seeing a "light" off in the distance. His "stay" at the hotel is actually hell...and once he finds this out, it's too late for him to escape. Well...that sorta ruined it for me :/

Rebel_Spy
This is only my humble opinion: I think that song is about drug addictions or some kind of addiction.... if you read closely: "You can check out any time you like But you can never leave " It's like an addiction, once you get started is very difficult to get out, don't you think? And some others parts of the lyrics are related to this theory.
obi
'You can check out any time you like, but you just can't ever leave." Hmm..it's a good thing that unsaved sinners can check out of hell when they want to. /sarcasm Like Rebel Spy said, I am pretty sure it's about some sort of addiction, and not the firey furnace. digl
there are some songs with amazing lyrics, stairway to heaven is similar in some ways to hotel california, it has thousands of interpretations, and of course a lot of people like the satanic ones... RpTheHotrod
You can check out anytime (die), but you can't leave hell. I'm just saying, this stuff came from the manager of the Eagles.
StormHammer
Well, you learn something new every day. Definitely creepy...and now I'll be thinking about that every time I hear that song. Sometimes I just seriously wonder...

Ah yes, from the manager... the one who wrote the songs. Even if they were affiliated with the Church of Satan, there's much less reference to that then there is to some type of drug addiction (be it alcohol or narcotics). And aside from all of that, the Eagles did a lot of drugs in the 60s and 70s, so i'm sure that influenced the song as well.
Darth Groovy
I too was infromed of this through a youth group session I learned in the earyly 90's that "Hotel California" was indeed about a trip to Hell. It was questionable in content, but remains one of my favorite Eagle's songs to date. My favorite is actually, "One of these Nights".
Skate Boy
The song "A horse with no name" by America is about drugs...I still like it. This song too.
