Ernil
I would like to know if any other's out there have an opinion on the changes MI4 made to Melee Island. When I first heard that they were re-visiting Melee, I was extremely happy. After re-visiting though, my hopes were let down. There were many different things in different places, the old characters were a bit different, and many of my favorite places were gone. So, my question is, did you enjoy the changes made to Melee Island? And, an afterthought, which visit to Melee did you enjoy more? Which gave the better adventures? Any thoughts would be welcome. Farewell, Ernil
Remi
I didn't so much that they changed it round a bit, it was more how they changed it. Melee Town was a fairly big town in MI1, in EMI there's only a few buildings. Plus they cut off Smirk's part of the island. :~ Not a big deal, but all still kinda strange. Hårfagre
I wonder how they managed to change the cliffside behind and infront of the mansion.
Thrik
The Melee Island in EMI completely sucked. It was completely different in both layout and look. I mean, how on earth did they make the mansion suddenly right next to the town when previously it was a significant distance away? The ground also looked.. weird.. and it looked like a few buildings as Remi said. In MI1 the buildings looked dense and it was clearly intended to be a very busy town. The SCUMM Bar also looked completely different.
Remi
The Scumm Bar looked different, but at least it looked good. Same with Meathook's place. I guess part of the look of EMI's problems was that the exterior often looked kinda meh, while the interiors looked quite decent.
C Shutt
Voicing Otis as a gay Puerto Rican was an interesting choice.
scabb
I was disappointed at not being greeted by the familiar theme when I entered the Scumm Bar, although the new piece was quite good. I was also looking forward to meeting the Fettuccini brothers again. Oh, and the voice acting was spot on for all the characters on Melee.
Benny
I thought Otis' voice was crap and yes I was really disappointed at not having the original scumm bar theme too. As Remi said Melee seemed much smaller in EMI, non-piratey and with very little atmosphere unlike in MI1.
Governor Phatt
i agree with Remi too, and the way everything were placed was crap. The Scumm bar is meant to be part of a big ol wooden dock type thing that leads into melee town And i was actually lookin forward to seein the map selling guy too. And i hated Otis and Carla, Carla didnt sound jamaican... thats how i imagined her, what being in the carribbean and all lol Although Meathook was ok.... Tahnee
Well, you've got to remember that the Mêlée Guybrush and Elaine came back to in EMI was a ghost town. As various characters tell you/hint at repeatedly, Ozzie Mandrill's been through there buying up property and driving pirates out. So maybe it was supposed to look like that...? And I liked Carla's voice in EMI. Sure, she didn't sound Jamaican or anything, but she had the "bitter" edge in her voice that fit well with the character, considering the whole trapped-on-Monkey-Island snafu. Dynmonkolectric
Keep in mind, I've only played the EMI demo (and haven't been all-too impressed by the thing) but was quite disappointed with their Melee island. Their heart was in the right place, but Melee Island didn't have the same atmosphere. It was just terrible.
scabb
I think one of the most prominent reasons that EMI disappointed was the fact that they chose to revisit a bunch of Islands. If you want to do this, you sure as hell have to do it right to satisfy the fans, and the ice is incredibly thin. CMI managed to avoid annoying people by sticking to original locations only. Amongst other things.
Ryback
Ah, but you see, this is why they had to revisit at least one of the islands from the last games. In SMI, Elaine is the Governor of Melee. In MI2, she's apparently moved on to be the Governor of Booty, the Governorship of Melee being an open question, with the implication that she's now the Governor of two islands. In CMI, Elaine is revealed to be the Governor of three islands, Booty, Melee and Plunder, via the Tri-Island Area thingy. So, you're making a fourth MI game. What do you do about Elaine, given that she has to be the Governor of something (her character's not very well defined otherwise). You could come up with yet another new island for her to be the Governor of, but that'd be silly, and it'd make Elaine seem less a lovable figure than a evil power-mad hellion implacably bent on assimilating the Caribbean one island at a time. By the time we get to MI7 or so you'd be expecting her to invade Poland. This means we have to return to one of the islands. Just for sanity's sake. Note also that EMI has solved this problem! Thus leaving no barriers for a new game with completely new locations - unless the designers simply have to include Monkey Island again...

I think ull find when guybrush and Elaine are in Elaines bedroom in MI2 elaine says "Thats why i quit my job and left no forwarding address" so when did she be reapointed governor of the island? C Shutt
Yes. Escape from Monkey Island expanded on this, by using "The Tri-Island Area" as a name for the entire Carribbean, and repeating it in every second sentence. EMI sucked so goddamn much. It's like the United States of America... it just keeps on expanding. Edit: Uh, I'm a Goon now? When did this happen? Oh well, Ying tong iddle I po, I guess. Demon Chuckie
Why in every other post does it need to come down to people complaining about how much EMI sucked. Wev'e done it before and my personal opinion is that it wasn't too bad (but let's be fair, it was the worst). I don't have any problem with the Mele island in either game, and if theyn brought back every character from the original game then it really would suck. Gabez
Personally I prefered EMI over CMI and maybe even *gasp* SOMI. Hell they're all good games.
n3crius
MI1 still holds massive appeal for me in terms of atmosphere during the initial location of Melee Island. The structure of the island is well thought out, and imo realistic. The 'town' on the island is still a magical place. What is it about the dock, the sea and the moon? The place where you see your ships mast break! And then, there is the Melee Island in the last offering. Basically all the points mentioned I agree with (the scummbar location, the town centre, the distance to the mansion etc). It all dissapointed me thouroughly and wasn't at all what I had hoped for. Infact, while I'm drinking my whisky I'll sat this as well. The last game (MI4) was actually a great big piece of poo! That's correct! Sure I'll go with it, I'm a MI fan.. but c'mon you know it! The story wasn't that good. The islands were crap, and the end??? The fight / mortal kombat ****??? C'mon you know it! 3D? What a great idea! No. It wasn't needed. It did NOTHNG for me. If I want 3D I'll play a FPS or a DECENTLY MADE 3D ADVENTURE like NWN or something. CMON YOU KNOW IT!!! sigh.
Governor Phatt
To be honest i didnt mind the 3D, although id have preferred the graphics and stuff to be a little more well done. And i was never that bothered about Monkey Kombat, it was basically just a more complex version of the swordfighting. But i am still upset about the island, id have preffered it if they had just kept it practically the same as it appeared in SoMI with the same camera angles and stuff, except obviously in 3D and with a few more angles and stuff to make it nice and cinematic. (but i dont see the need to point out how bad EMI was in almost every topic, cos to be honest it wasnt THAT bad)

Cutthroat_Nick
What happened to the bay inside of Melee Island-its hardly recognisable! And STANS, or the Melee Boat place thingy is not in the bay, it is where Smirk's used to be, but I thought Ozzie Mandrill bought up that place?!?!? And the forest path and Carla's place, even though Ozzie bought the place, you could still probably get there!?!?!? And what is with the Govs. Mansion North on the Island!?!?!?!?! It is west on a cliff face near Melee town!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And, some may remember that in the South Region of the Island there was a strange path leading nowhere. Even though it served no purpose, WHERE IS IT!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! And in the Govs Mansion, there is a ""COAT CLOSET"" That was a totally different room in SMI where the idol of Many hands was!?!?!? AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH

Cutthroat_Nick
YES!? There is a path in SMI um, The path which the troll toll bridge is on, branches down somewhere to the south, but there is nothing down there.
