Moosferatu
I was wondering what the best free e-mail provider is? You see, something just happened to my AOL account (I don't want it but my dad likes AOL), and I figured I should try to set up something else. I could use some advice. Thanks! PS: amishler, kingz, jake, or anyone else that has my e-mail address, please don't try to e-mail me right now. Instead send me a PM. Thanks. Homoludens
I like Yahoo.
Moosferatu
Yeah, it does look the best so far. I have looked at Hotmail, Yahoo, and Excite. Yahoo appears to have most storage space at 4megs. Do you have anything to say in Excite's defence, Kingz?
DustCropper
Hotmail is nice but I get lots of spam. I've heard it isn't as big a problem on Yahoo.
Moosferatu
Well, for some reason after telling me that my mail did not exist, it is working again. I would still like to have some suggestions for other providers, because I don't like AOL.
amishler
I have both Hotmail and Yahoo accounts. I use the Hotmail more just because I've had it longer and more people know about it, but I prefer Yahoo overall. Yahoo has a bigger free inbox (4 MB as opposed to Hotmail's 1 MB). I think at this point you're probably going to get spam no matter what, so that's not a huge factor. Hotmail does have a pretty good filtering system that sends any messages from people not in your contact list or on a safe list to the junk folder, though it looks like Yahoo has something similar too. In Hotmail, you can access your other e-mail accounts for free, and it looks like you have to pay $20/year for that in Yahoo. [EDIT]: I misread this. You can access other accounts in Yahoo mail for free. You have to pay to forward your Yahoo mail to other accounts. The big thing for me that puts Yahoo on top of Hotmail, in addition to the 4 MB storage, is that when you get an e-mail with a link in it and click on it, it opens up in a new window without frames. Hotmail has its own frames for windows you open from a message, and it often ruins links that require cookies. To summarize: I still use Hotmail, but mostly from force of habit. I would recommend Yahoo easily over Hotmail. And I don't know anything about Excite, so I'll let someone else opine on it.
Moosferatu
I like spam, that isn't a factor. I just love opening up my mail box and deleting mail. I understand why Tim gets such a kick out of it.
fov
i have accounts with yahoo and excite. i signed up for yahoo about 4 years ago (actually, was forced over there when they bought geocities) and didn't use the account at all until a few months ago... when i went over there, it was full of spam. i was amazed since i hadn't even known the account existed! at excite, on the other hand, i have never received one piece of spam. there's never even anything in my "bulk" folder. and i have been using that address for over 3 years. now, that could be because of the difference in the addresses, though. the prefix at my yahoo address is fov -- which apparently isn't hard for spammers to figure out (do they just try random combinations of letters or somthing?). my excite address is my first name underscore last name, which would probably be impossible for some auto spammer thingie to figure out unless someone knew me by name and wanted to spam me. Hehe, well it's just annoying when I go on a vacation, come back and realize that my email has been shut down for the past two weeks all because my storage space is full due to a few hundred spam emails. It drives me nuts!
amishler
And just think, with Yahoo, you can get 4 times as much spam to delete! Good times, indeed.

Kingzjester
I had a Yahoo account some five years ago and then there was this long period of outage when I couldn't access it and it went on/off constantly, the service was downright horrible, so I changed to Excite. Since, I tried to change from Excite to something else (I was being bored by the yorick9 - I don't know why I inserted that nine there), but I realized that that something else sucked. Yahoo, of course recovered after I left and I don't remember ever having any problems with Excite. Similar features to the two. Excite is smaller, yes, but 3mbs don't get full that easily. mercatfat
Evilemail.com gives you 5 megs, no spam, and a lame Hot Topic-esque @ address. I used it during my depressive retard period. You too can be like merc!
Moosferatu
Thanks for the suggestion, merc, but I think I will pass on the creepy e-mail provider. I think I will go with Yahoo. Now to come up with a whitty address...

ChaosFish
Cwazy.co.uk Is very good, 10 MB of space, a POP3 server, non commercial, but you have to have your SMTP server (you probably got one from your ISP).
Mattsius
Yahoo sends my mails directly to Outlook, so I haven't got a problem with space. Works like a charm!
pleto4_ryan
I used and still use yahoo....i am just perfect...i am using it for over 6 years(?) without deleting any e-mail except of the ads...and i am still at the 70% full...(6 MB) Also the spam all go to the bunk mail...i have to see a spam mail in my inbox for years... Yahoo has a feature lumps all bulk mail and deletes them automatically after 30 days. There's also the option that lets you report spam whenever it shows up in your main folder - may not help dramatically, but at least it encourages you to contribute to keeping spam under control. The problem is that some of my "Good" letters turn up into the bulk mail...and as many times as i send the "this is NOT spam" the e-mails continue to go in there
Homoludens
Oh of course it's not 100% effective, but as long as you report every spam you get it does at least help Yahoo to combat them as best they can. I also never open any email that doesn't come from anyone I know (i.e., anyone in my address book), no matter how tempting - no exceptions. Period. Only morons open unfamiliar email, and that is one huge contributing factor to the ongoing deluge of spam. So I at least do my little thing to help out.
