Jalok is male, and I'm not open to gay relationships. I like the being paid idea though. Maybe Jalok's former lover paid Rolan to steal the artifact? (The artifact should be a red vibroblade. )

Basically, I'm thinking that Rolan stole some valuable artifact from the Compeer. The Compeer either wants it back or Rolan dead.
