Precisely. Arguing the point with Apple is likely to be fruitless. Unfortunately. They just don’t want to touch anything that might even slightly infringe on copyright. The way they see it: Does this app allow you download games from the internet and play them on a system they weren’t designed for? Yep. For all intents and purposes this is the definition of an emulator to most people, and the functionality to the end user is ultimately the same: I can play game X on system Y. If Apple DO say no, ScummVM’s best bet might to be a version that includes only the games that can be legally distributed, without any way to add more. Just shut off that functionality? (Emulators on iOS have done the same, and then tried to sneak in this “add a game”functionality later, but they’ve always been caught by Apple.) Either way, best of luck to ScummVM! I’d certainly love ScummVM on the App Store! (Beats trying to compile it manually — which I’ve done before and contributed to the documentation as well.) I really hope I’m wrong about all this. As Thrik said, the issue isn’t that ScummVM is an emulator (which it isn’t), the issue is that Apple doesn’t allow emulators because of their functionality. And it’s likely Apple will view ScummVM ij the same light… even though the clue is in the name that it isn’t actually an emulator. They’re just deathly allergic to anything even tangential to emulation Of course, I hope I’m wrong 🤞🤞

So ScummVM is finally coming to iOS/iPad OS apparently: https://www.scummvm.org/news/20230907/ But as far as I can tell, Apple hasn't changed any of its guidelines around not allowing emulators on the App Store, and when questioned about it, Sev seemed a little surprised that it might be an issue. Time will tell!

I haven't watched it, but I've always wondered what he thought about the "Hal Barwood on Monkey 2" thing. (Although, actually, I'm pretty sure I asked him years ago - now that I think about it - and he said he thought it was because he had a tendency to give aphorisms about things. Why they made them so negative, I don't know!)

Oh wow. It's been so long since I played with Behind the Magic. I always loved that thing... (although I bet every detail is totally wrong now 😅). I always thought it was interesting that Gary Kurtz was royally snubbed in the database. The guy was involved with all the best Lucas directed films.

If you haven't played it, the Case of the Golden Idol is supremely enjoyable and has similar inductive reasoning puzzles.

I knew this, but reading about it in more detail is really quite interesting. I've always thought that Last Crusade's interface was one of the major barriers to the game's general enjoyment (that and the random dialogue puzzles). The idea that it could be made to behave like Monkey Island EGA's vastly superior interface is intriguing.

I did indeed see both those sculptures (Dawn/Dusk) at the Medici chapel! I enjoyed them, but I know what you mean. (Freaking David was AMAZING.)

Hello all, I'm currently travelling around Europe after losing my job and I was just in Paris. I went the Louvre (amazing) and while I was there it suddenly struck me that I might be able to find the original statue from Maniac Mansion/Last Crusade. I've always been convinced that it was an 8-bit representation of a real statue... but after Googling for information on it while I was in there, it doesn't appear to have been the case. Can anyone set me right? Is it based on a real statue, or was it a Lucas Games invention? (Last Crusade features two Manets and a (paint by numbers) Mona Lisa, so it seemed plausible that the statue seen in MM/LC was a real one...) Greetings and many thanks from Florence!

Same. I recently played The Return of the Obra Dinn and The Case of the Golden Idol. Both feature similar puzzle-solving gameplay (but very different interfaces). Probably both enjoyable for puzzle/story fans. Also I finally got around to playing Unpacking -- the game that beat Psychonauts 2 for best story. I have to say I was impressed and I can see why it won, although it's EXTREMELY short: 3 hours total gameplay.
