I agree with this, but why does everyone keep forgetting the other areas that Ron and company could take risks/do something different? Namely, the story and the story telling. I personally think Ron is about to blow shit up! He’s had decades to think about it. His mistake. Someone should probably correct him. Ron wasn’t involved in the VGA versions. He’s said several times that he didn’t like the VGA close ups. He also told me (yeah, I totally met the legend once at a fan meet n greet) that he started MI2 immediately after he completed 1… without waiting for permission from the higher ups. So it’s possible the VGA sprites just got back ported from MI2 the same way the interface did for the CD VGA version. Either way, the VGA version isn’t Ron canon.

This statement both works for and against what I said, which means it's perfect.

Echo chambers produce people who wander around thinking their opinion matches everyone else's. When they do meet someone who thinks differently, they look at them as if they're part of some long lost tribe, convinced they form part of a tiny (misinformed) minority. "Doesn't this person realise how outlandish their beliefs are?" When they join forums, they make bold statements and can't back them up... because they've never been challenged before. Instead they fall back on their mistaken belief that they represent the vast majority of people, and so don't need to defend themselves. They never properly engage with what's in front of them. Or question their own beliefs. It's essentially a sort of self-brainwashing now that I think about it. (Of course it's human nature to want to feel part of something larger. Something that makes sense. Instead of a chaotic mess. So I get why you'd want to lie to yourself this way.) Nobody leaves Mojo thinking they're part of some right-minded majority. There's too many disagreements, debates and discussions to be convinced . They're just done civilly (although fools don't fare well).

Au contraire. You likely watched Tenet with likely lower expectations than them due to their dislike of it.

Every time I've walked out of a cinema with my jaw on the floor. (And it's happened maybe three times in my life.) I went into a see a film I knew nothing about. Zero, zip, nada. And every time I've left been disappointed, it's because my expectations were too high going in. I remember when Jurassic Park came out. I was a HUGE Spielberg fan. There was no doubt I was going to LOVE this film. It was MADE for me! I devoured every morsel that the TV at the time could give me. Every behind the scene snippet Every interview. Every trailer. I've never felt so disappointed. I want back, again and again, trying to watch the film everyone else was seeing... but every time I saw a film that didn't meet my super-hyped expectations. (It was only decades later, during lockdown, that I finally enjoyed it.) Spoilers spoil. I don't give a frig what a study allegedly shows. Give me ignorance, or give me death.

I still think she has much better chemistry with Guybrush based on the videos I watched recently.

I didn't know that, but then I Googled and found this amazing Live Tweet of Tim playing MI2 (which I'd totally missed)... https://scummbar.com/games/index.php?game=2&sub=info&todo=21 What a swanky website. I can't believe I didn't know about it! You could what?! I was joking about not knowing about The Scumm Bar... I really didn't know about this. Damn, I suffered for nothing.

It's an evolution of the engine he built for Thimbleweed Park (he wrote a blog explaining all the things he wished he'd done differently). He then made the free mini-game Delores to test out this new evolution (and made the engine open source for others to play with). I would guess that Delores is where you want to look if you're interested in how the interface is going to work.

It's interesting: The more I see in action, the more I'm getting totally comfortable with the graphic style. I actually didn't even notice it when I watched that clip... I just wanted to see what was going to happen. I hope the rest of the fandom are coming around to it like I am. Anyways... loved the video. Want to play it. NOW... But OH GOD (here's come the fanboi), I don't like the text wobble! I hated it in Thimbleweed Park (and I hated how longer lines scrolled off the edge of the screen, too). Of course, I'll cope. I'll cope.

The point I was making is that comedy was rare. Very rare. Of course there were outliers beforehand, but not everyone agreed that the smutty humour of LSL was actually... funny. The Secret of Monkey Island was mainstream and consistently funny. Maniac Mansion and Zak had funny elements and a sense of humour... but nobody goes around quoting them the way they do with MI. I don't know if you've gotten around to the clips of magazine articles that back this up? It was literally a subject of conversation at the time: "Comedy in video games... can it work?" Gen X vs Gen Y I'm still Gen X in my heart, but I appreciate Gen Y's attempts at making things better... most of the time, anyway.

You can criticise whatever you want, but what happened with ReMI was about outright abuse. And it was towards a tiny team of people whose game wasn't even out yet. Call it "tone police" if you want, but IMO abuse isn't acceptable anywhere at any time. (And yes, of course I've failed at this in my life, but it's doesn't mean I think my behaviour has been acceptable when I've failed.) So I don't see it as a double standard when compared to Escape. Right now everyone's just tired of hearing complaints about the new art style because it's a shallow and subjective observation that doesn't lead to interesting discussion. And also because there's an unfortunate connection to some horrible human beings. So, yes it is kind of frowned upon... because only we're all sick of it, and we don't want to open the flood gates to those horrible human beings thinking we're on the same team. I also agree with Jake that come back here in six months after the game has been released, and we've all time to digest it, and you'll see lots of balanced discussion about the game's perceived merits and flaws. In fact, probably for the next 20 years! I also think it's great that some people have got so much love for Escape. It deserves it! And I'm glad that complaints about it here tend to be considered and thoughtful, just like the discussions about ReMI will be once it's released.

I predict that we’ll see Monkey Island. Or somewhere new. Or something else.

Very good point. I think that's why I dislike the first SE so much. They played everything for laughs. I like the fact that Ron has focussed on making a solid pirate adventure again. I can't wait...

Speaking of Curse, I discovered for the first time yesterday that Pálido Domingo says different things to Guybrush, depending the date of your computer when you play. After all this time that game still surprises and delights with its density of little touches
-
Nobody wants to see that thing again, so why would they try and build a conceit to bring it back?
-
Yeah, if they just pretended there's no giant monkey robots around, that'll be fine by me. Trying to explain away EMI's oddities would probably be more effort than it's worth.

The Nostradamus principle: If you guess enough random things, eventually one of them might look right
-
I agree. Even if you guess correctly, it's not worth any bragging rights because it's just a guess. It's not like anyone could cleverly deduce anything at this stage. It's just randomly throwing story elements at a wall until they stick (which, incidentally, is part of the writer's process). And later, once we have more information, if you do cleverly deduce something then you're only spoiling a plot twist for yourself. (I agree this can be satisfying, but given that Ron making a new Monkey Island is so incredibly rare -- and unlikely to happen again -- I'd personally put planned surprises over satisfaction at outwitting him and Dave.) Anyway, that's just how I see it. I don't expect anyone change their views.
