Zoom Rabbit
I have an idea for a new way to annoy people on bulletin boards. Years ago I read a couple of books by Greg Bear called Eon and Eternity that dealt with (among other things) a human colony that had developed several hundred years in a 'null space' civilization. Highly advanced technically, one thing about the future people in these books that caught my attention was what the author called 'picting.' The humans wore computer-linked holographic projectors around their necks (called 'pictors') that projected 3-D images and symbols in the air beside their heads as they spoke. By using both images and words at the same time, the characters had taken language into a whole new arena. For example, one could say 'disaster' and at the same time pict an elephant running off a cliff...or, say 'disaster' and pict a jealous wife catching her husband in bed with another woman. Choosing a different pict changes the meaning of 'disaster' somewhat. Of course, it doesn't escape me that we internet denizens do a rudimentary form of picting already. It evolved naturally in internet communication, when we found that the missing element of body language and facial expression could be smilied back in to a limited degree. However. URL-linking and quick-loading jpegs make it possible for us to take this a bit further. If what I'm about to invent is indeed an original idea, I would like to label it picting in honor of the sci-fi writer (Greg Bear) who inspired it. Picting 1. Write your post as normal. This will ensure that what you have to say is at least there in words for those who don't click links. Do not post it yet, but minimize the window. 2. Launch a second web browser. Go to image search at Google, which is the mother source of all picts and search for relevant images you wish to pict. When you choose one, click on 'view image alone' and save that page on your favorite tab. Retitle it to something short that describes the image so you can find it easily later. 3. Copy the URL of your image. Now, go to your post and paste it into a link behind the word you wish to supplement with the image. If you aren't sure how to do a shielded link, just hit the quote button on this post to see how the coding is done. 4. Bear in mind that calling up images takes very little time once they're stored on the favorites tab of your web browser. As you build up a bigger vocabulary of picts, searching at Google is something you do infrequently. What could be simpler? So, Ray, do you think this idea will catch on with the rest of Lucasforums? I wanna know what you think of my invention...

leXX
Although it is a great idea, it's annoying to have to click on loads of pic links. I can't see it catching on myself. Sorry. =(
Sivy
nice idea Zoom, lots of interesting pics to look at
Darth Groovy
If that's the case, I would probably be the biggest addict. People know me as being picture happy. I am a firm believer that a picture is worth a thousand words. Even though I am often long winded, I still never pass up an opportunity to throw a pic here and there! That is extremely awsome! RoyTordesLegend
I'm a big fan of Bruce. Got beered up and bought a copy of what I thought was Maniac Cop from the garage for a fiver, only to find it had a tiny number 2 printed on it - Maniac Cop 2 - starring Bruce Cambell - except he gets killed off at a news stand after five minutes......sigh..... Wasslera
Sounds like fun , but a lot of work
Zoom Rabbit
True, it is a lot of work. Every time you click on a pict, though, you have a chance to save it on your favorites tab and add it to your own. It should take no time at all to build up a decent vocabulary this way... I discovered today when I tried to do this on my crappy Imac that it only works with a high-speed computer. Lexx is right--it takes too long to download picts otherwise. What was I thinking? Looks like I'll just have to come up with another forum game to amuse myself.
Redwing
Interesting concept Zoomie, but perhaps a little flawed in its arena
Zoom Rabbit
I predict that within a year, picting will be a fad here at Lucasforums, if not bulletin boards everywhere... The way computer technology is evolving, everyone will have high-speed satellite or DSL links by then anyway. Zoom Rabbit = ahead of his time.
