StormHammer
Well...maybe I'm a more liberal parent than some...because I certainly wouldn't try to foist my own ideals on my kids. Sure, I want them to have a good life, do well in school, act responsibly, be polite, and all the rest of it. However, I wouldn't try to restrict their freedom of movement when they reach their teens. Yes, I too am concerned about mad paedophiles on the rampage, and of course I would worry about something happening to my kids. It's a sad reflection of modern times. However, I remember when I was a child, of about 5 or 6, and I'd go out for hours on end, riding my bike, playing with kids the same age, etc. We didn't have a care in the world, and child abduction certainly didn't seem as prevalent then as it is today. Basically, I can remember those as good times, and I want my own kids to have some of those experiences. When it comes to education...I want my kids to do well, obviously. That's only natural. However, I can also recognise that every individual has their own strengths and weaknesses. If my kids don't do well in certain subjects...well, that's to be expected, and I certainly won't hold it against them. If they can read and write, and add two numbers correctly by the time they leave school, then they at least have 'opportunity' to excel in some other field, whatever that may be. It's unreasonable, in my view, to expect anyone to get top grades in every subject. Perhaps I hold that view because I used to be a trainer in the workplace...and even delivered some adult education courses (in basic computer literacy). I encountered a lot of people of varying ability, across a whole range of different ages. And I knew that some of those people would never find stable employment, because they either didn't have the aptitude or even ability to function in a work place. Trying to 'protect' your kids from 'the wider world' is pretty stupid, IMHO. They're going to learn about it one way or another...and I'd rather help them through understanding things about the world, than try to blinker them, and pretend X doesn't happen, or Y doesn't exist. As for money...yes, I'd like them to be responsible with whatever money they are given, and put some aside for the future - but at the same time I'm not going to deny them the pleasure of spending at least some of it on things they need/want. As long as it's not illegal, that is. I generally try to be fair, and always listen to my kids' point of view. If you don't do that...you risk alienating them, and then wonder where it all went wrong... As for religion, I won't teach them that. They will learn about some religion in school...and then they are free to take whichever path they choose. You can't force a belief system on someone, unless you brainwash them. And I'm not into brainwashing. I want my kids to be free thinkers, and make their own choices regarding their spiritual needs. I've never really understood 'control freak' parents, to be honest. I actually dislike parents who force their kids into activities the kids themselves don't like, or may not have taken up given the choice. It's usually a reflection on the fact that the parents themselves wanted to do that particular activity, and didn't for whatever reason. So they try to live it through their kids instead, and that's just sickeningly sad. Like those who push their kids into tennis or some other sport, and try to make them 'excel' in it. FFS...give them the right to choose their own path and do something they actually 'enjoy'. Rant over. If you wonder why your parents do certain things, and won't allow you to do certain things...take a step back and think about the reasons. If you don't know the reasons...ask. If you don't get a fair response, then deal with it, and realise that there will be a point in your life when you can leave home, and leave it all behind if you have to. Actually, usually I just watch only for a little bit, but I'm there the whole time. My parents got over making me actually watch it like after the 80th time. Man, if I was the Dj, that would be sweet! Eminem, Cypershill, Darkest Hour (rap and hardcore rock) all the way! It rocks, usually the stuff I hear at shows is like 50's jazz or like oldies rock lol

Samuel Dravis
The only real gripe I have about my parents is about their stance on PC games (I don't own a console, and they suck, IMO). My dad is the one that I have to *talk* to about games, and he has this strange, strong dislike of games with guns (first person especially). They apparently believe that playing such games will make me more likely to kill, or make me indifferent to such acts. This is not true. In fact, over the past few years, I have come to dislike real guns/violence more so than previously (our family owns several .22's). I don't like that they think of me this way. To quote Kurgan: I'm a mature gamer who can tell the difference between real life violence (which I abhor) and fantasy game violence (which is no big deal) Another thing is that they will not let me bring home any game without previous permission for that specific one. Let me point out that none of the games I have ever asked to be allowed to buy (or even without asking) have been rejected for excessive violence or gore. Generally the only games I think are worth buying are rated T, and all I'm asking for is to be allowed to buy ones rated that (or less) without asking permission EVERY SINGLE TIME, FOR EVERY SINGLE GAME. However, they apparently still distrust me on this matter for whatever reason - and they won't negotiate or at least tell me why they won't let me pick my own games. At least they let me buy candy... Guest Jed
So you're in hell, supposedly. I know I bitch about my life sometimes, yes, but in the end things are for the better. Also, when life gets you down, keep in mind there's always someone with a worse situation. Nothing I hate seeing more is people with a better situation than a lot of other people bitching because they're not happy with some relatively minor aspect of their life compared to some other's problems. BTW, use your edit post button, MasterSidious - double and triple posts are not accepted here.

SkinWalker
Teenagers in Congo and Sierra Leone in East Africa complain because they get kidnapped an forced into fighting a bloody civil war. Often they are forced to kill family members as well as commit attrocities against humanity. Teenagers in Afghanistan endure having to walk to school (often barefoot) following a path carefully deliniated through mine fields. Straying from the path could mean loosing a leg or a life. Teenagers in Chechnya are troubled by the fact that they have no schools. In fact, they often have no homes or running water or adequate food. Winter is comming. Teenagers in Indonesia aren't bothered with school. They don't have time. School interferes with jobs at sweatshops and other factories as well as manual labor in a variet of other industries. To families in this part of the world, a child is a source of income for the family once they reach the pre-teen and teenage years. Teenagers in India are bonded by relatives to work for diamond cutters and polishers to repay debts that are never satisfied. Their only way out is to have children and use them to pass on the debt. Teenage girls in Burma are sold into slavery by their impoverished families and raped several times a day for the remainder of their childhoods or until dead. Teenagers in the United States complain that: 1. CAN NOT GO ANYWHERE BY MYSELF 2. can not buy anything 3. have to go to horse shows about 30 - 40 weeks in a year 4. Have to get REALLY good grades (4.0) to not get screamed at I know what hardships I'd like to choose if it came to that. Yeah, I'm not making this stuff up! This is my life! I know the world's scary but, I'll get over it! Seriously, am I over reactting or is this abunch of stupid **************************! I'm not impressed or sorry for you. You owe everything to those that provide for you. You are lucky to have even the basic necessities of water, food, clothing and shelter. Quit whining. TheJackal
SkinWalker, no offense to you. But I know a lot of people who often do this. Site the problems foreing country face every day. I sympathise with them too. But I find that more than often, the poeple who use this an someone who is having problem (for example) dealing with his parents are more than often hypocrites. Now, PLEASE dont take this as an attack or insult to you. I'm not calling you hypocrite. (sp?) I'm just saying I'm getting tired of people who say this and dont do squat about it. They don't start clubs in high school to collect money for these children. they don't even read the news, they rather buy cellphones or video games. Anyways. this is just a little rant. I'm just happy Canada is finally taking a stronger stance for these people who suffer so much. Soon, Canada will be the first country in the world who will distrube AIDs drugs to Africa. I don't know why governments are so afraid of the private drug industries with thier patents. I mean, can't they set aside thier greed and just help others for once. anyways. this is an other rant, I've been up for over 15 hours now. I need sleep. I'm meeting a client in 9 hours tomorow for a design contract. If anybody is insult please PM me. I will apologize for anything because nothing wrong was ment. SkinWalker
Come on TheJackal! I'm a little more thick-skinned than that! No.. you raised a good point. Still, I find it hard to complain about life when I know that I have it very good in comparisson with others. I think that this is a failing of our society that we don't acknowledge others in the world that are in peril. I don't think starting clubs and raising money should be the first step to helping those in the world who need it... if the awareness was encouraged and the causes / effects discussed, the young people in our societies would take action. Young people are good at that and "old people" of my generation don't give them enough credit.

Samuel Dravis
Skinwalker, The Jackal - If you want to see an interesting example of going too far with trying to help out other people less fortunate than yourself, check out the book 'Faith of the Fallen' by Terry Goodkind. Nicci is an excellent example of this. The book's story is also very good, btw.
Datheus
I don't buy into that whole "stop whining" some people are talking about. Ok, sure it could be worse, but it can *always* be worse. It can be worse than it already is in these countries where children are forced into war, etc etc. So since it could be worse for even those children, maybe they should stop whining as well. Now, I'm not one to be apathetic, but if MasterSidious has been lucky enough to be born in a good country, he shouldn't have to spend his life feeling guilty about himself. It's the same way with human survival. When humans learned to cook and harvest, we were able to stop worrying about the hunt and we were able to worry about social issues... Besides, as long as he's not constantly whining, it's good to get those negative feelings out. If not, that's when you start seeing people on the front page of the paper. Anyway, all I can really say Sidious is that you *are* just 16. So it's not like this is a permanent thing, just 2 more years

Have I got some info for you baby. Ok, so in the U.S. (I know this forsure) we can cure aids. Well, yes you can with hydrogen paroxide treatment in the main blood streams. You want to know why this is not being used or is out publicly (this just makes the world look so evil but it is true because my dad talks to these ppl) is because of these reasons: 1. It doesn't make you ANY money to do this for ppl. You can buy hydrogen paroxide and figure out to do this with a freakin book and not have to pay squat and be cured, i.e. there's no money in it so doctors don't use it. 2. Most patients are gay (ya ya I know but most of them are) and they can't/don't want to get cured because it takes 6 weeks to do the treatment and they say (why wait around when you can get fixed later or I don't care if I day because my life is better anyway ect. The moral, well U.S. has something that works as do the ppl that you're talking about in Canada but they don't us eit because od these reasons. How perfect is Canada now, huh? Oh, and BTW were you calling me a hypocrite or something? If so, and get a life.
