Joetheeskimo
Hello everyone. I've posted in a lot of threads saying somthing along the lines of "my computer is a piece of crap." Well, apparently that's going to change. My mom has agreed to buy the parts needed to upgrade my computer, but I'm not sure what parts I need to get. I've already picked a hard drive. What else do I need? Oh, and don't forget, I'm only building a new tower. I'm not getting a new printer, monitor, sound system, or anything. Thanks for your help. BCanr2d2
Well, first things first, work out what CPU you are getting. Decide on an Athlon XP or Pentium 4, and then chose most likely an Asus mobo to go with it. As for RAM, if you have XP, get at least 512 MB. In most cases it is easier and cheaper to buy a new system, without the speakers, monitor etc rather than piece by piece...
Sivy
go for an athlon XP, 2600+ or above, as they are much cheaper than P4s. be sure to get a good heat sink/ fan as athlons get very hot. if you prefer penitums then i wouldn't go lower than 2.5ghz. get yourself a gig of DDR RAM memory. 512 will do, but another 512 makes alot of difference. motherboard - asus, gigabyte, doesn't really matter as long as you make sure it supports your new cpu (including fsb speed) and memory. go to the manufactures website to double check. i would advise against one with on-board video. graphics card - nvidia geforce fx

Joetheeskimo
Thanks Siv. News Update: My mom said that she has to clear it with my dad. And, lets just say my dad doesn't like spending money. I'll hope for the best. Thanks again everyone.
Samuel Dravis
Before you go buying a lot of ram, make sure your OS can actually use it.
Joetheeskimo
What do you mean, "use" it?
Samuel Dravis
I think that Win2K and XP can use an infinite amount, but older ones can't. I can't remember the exact amounts...

Lindsey
If you can, get an FIC beand motherboard. Very easy to set up. Work flawless. Athlon processors are good as they are cheap.
