Sabretooth
Hmmm... Okay. What do you guys think of linux? (Anybody here uses linux?)
Treacherous Mercenary
Aside from not being able to play games with linux without an emulator and such, it'll suck. Otherwise, it's a good OS and it takes a bit to adapt to to say the least. It's more stable by far, it's free, and you get alot of apps with linux especially office, power point, etc automatically. Linux is more for business/servers imo though and it's not exactly as user friendly as Windows is, but you can have more options. Basicly, do a bit of research on it before considering linux. And suggestion: Don't get Red Hat 9 as the support for it is gone. Another suggestion, if you get XP, you can download and burn linux and create a dual boot if you chose to do so. Try these for starters: http://www20.tomshardware.com/howto/20040329/index.html http://www20.tomshardware.com/howto/20040412/index.html
Sivy
windows XP is far superior to windows ME. I had ME for awhile then I upgraded to XP. it was like the docile, almost euphoric feeling you get after the pain from being kicked in the nads finally goes. Jedi_Vogel
Anything is better than ME... even hamsters running on generators to keep your comp running is better than ME... I was advised on my old desktop to either downgrade to 98SE or upgrade to XP. If you're advised to downgrade your OS, you know there's problems... Wanderer
I bought recently a new harddisk so that I can run windows 98 on it...to play old good games again like Wizards&Warriors! Gues what....there are more games running under win98, it loads faster and it's more secure in the net. Though Win XP now is standard I prefer still Windows 98:p
Sabretooth
Can Linux and Windows go hand-in hand? I mean Linux on one partition and say, Win98 on another?
StormHammer
I have a dual-boot system now. I have 2 hard disks, and like you, I had the OS (win98SE) installed on one, and used the other for data. I just installed WinXP to the one with data, and it automatically detected the previous installation of Windows - and now it gives me the option to load either on startup. I use WinXP most of the time, but for some games (which have a few problems with WinXP), I just run Win98SE as usual. It saved a lot of headaches trying to reconfigure games to run under WinXP, or having to use DOS emulators. As for Linux and Windows - they can of course co-exist on the same computer, but I've heard people say before that it's better not to partition one hard-drive to have Linux and Windows side-by-side (although it's possible), just in case something goes wrong. Personally, I'd install Linux on one hard drive (which if I'm not mistaken will reformat the drive for Linux use), and Windows on a second hard drive. But that's just me. Good luck, whatever you decide.
BCanr2d2
For those with a new enough PC, get some decent sized USB drives, and use them as your alternate drives for another OS. Even a decent size thumbsize drive is perfect to install something like linux onto, and have the USB device be the first one on the boot list (let the bios do the work) I am pretty sure they would have to be fairly new mobo's to support that
