Well, a movie by any other name is still a rose.

The name is appropriate because in this episode, the Sith have there revenge on the Jedi by gaining control of the galaxy and eliminating the Jedi order. In TPM , Darth Maul says to Darth Sidious "At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi, at last we will have our revenge." It took them about 13 years from their self-revelation to the Jedi to their revenge, but it did happen. The revenge of the Sith is a perfect title.

When the Phantom Menace name came out, I really did think that it was an absolutely shocking name.

For me, I felt that TPM was appropriate in the sense that it was setting up EP2 and 3 since there was really a phantom menace (being both Maul and Palpatine)

Attack of the Clones seemed a bit crap as well. I've since got used to them though.

This is also justified since the Lucas seems to go with what is happening near the end of the film for his titles, and for the 3rd Act, it was when the Clone Army was attacking Geonosis

RotS (i'm officially the first person to use that acronym) is the perfect title - the complete antithesis of Return of the Jedi. Indeed, from reading the spoiler forum we can see a lot of similiarities between RotS and RotJ - it's just that the 2 are going in different tangets (luke resists, anakin does not etc).

Actually, the minute after the AP (associated press) released the info, I said oh great, now we have a lucasfilm that RotS(implying both the new title and the fact that a great # of people have been somewhat disappointed with Lucas and how EP1 & EP2 were done)

Also, Return of the Jedi was originally going to be called Revenge of the Jedi, so it makes sense that he would apply it to the Sith instead.

I believe lucas decided on Return over Revenge since the Jedi are supposed to be portraying the good guys of the galaxy and when you think of Revenge, you think of nasty tactics and an agenda played out to exact pain onto another. The Jedi weren't like that.

I am well happy.

I's a predictable but good choice.

Honestly, the people who complain tend to be the oddballs who think hopeless fan names like Birth of the Empire or Fall of the Republic (LOL!) are good choices. Nothing anybody else has come up with is better then Revenge of the Sith particularly as it mirrors the final OT installment. That's probably why 90% of people are happy with it, because it works.

I think it's cool and like Nairb Notneb said:

and I agree

Also:

"Return of the Jedi" was originally to be titled "Revenge of the Jedi." Some advance promotional material even featured that title, but Lucas changed it later in production.

"This time, George tells us he's going to keep 'Revenge' in the title," Sansweet said.

That said on the CNN web site

and i've always been under the impression that the jedi who 'returns' in RotJ is anakin, since the entire HEXOLOGY (is that even a word?) is about the little slave boy who conquered the galaxy only to have his son redeem him.

I think they meant the Jedi's return to power from nothing.

I got the impression a past star wars insider member asked that question about why they changed the original name of Revenge of the Jedi to Return of the Jedi and the person who answers the Q and A at the end of each Star Wars Insider issue said it was something about Star Wars Episode VI being released close to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and both subtitles sounded similar or the same so he changed it at the last minute. That way people weren't confused.

Wrath of Khan and Revenge of the Jedi don't sound similar. Their definition is similar but you'd need to as stupid as a human to confuse by so little.

Oh...

On-topic, the title is fine, sounds good, predictable(but at this point who doesn't know what happens at the end of the movie?), and most people like it.

Besides, Star Wars never had good titles.

It's not a case of good or bad titles, it's the fact that Lucas has always chosen oldskool type titles, and besides, they aren't THE title, they're chapter titles.

STAR WARS

The Phantom Menace

Attack of the Clones

Revenge of the Sith

A New Hope

The Empire Strikes Back

Return of the Jedi

It doesn't matter what these titles are because over time we get used to them and treat them just as we would the OT trilogy titles. Besides, we all know when every one of you go into the theatre to watch RotS you won't give a flying **** about the title and will all come out saying I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT SO MUCH! GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME. You know you will, but for some of you, to save face you'll come back here and say "eh it was aright"

I still hate Attack of the Clones, and I suppose Revenge of the Sith will grow on me...but my title befits the overall mood of the movie...

...y'know, given that the last 2 drove alot of people insane...

...and I place the blame souly on Jar-Jar Binks.

sure, if you're looking at the word 'jedi' in the plural sense, then luke's fulfillment of this part of his fate has spurred the return of the jedi as a group. and not saying that you're wrong, but these stories have always been about anakin skywalker (he's been in all 6 flicks so far), and since he left the jedi order in EP3, he returns as a jedi in EP6 ... we even see him in the jedi garb sitting next to yoda and obi-wan on endor.

but hey, we're all entitled to our opinions. only the big GL knows exactly what the significance of each title is.

Lynk Former is right, these movie titles are chapter titles and if you have ever read a book with titles in it you will see that the chapter titles often reflect a part of that chapter, maybe not the entire chapter (movie in this case) but it focuses on an important event, or series of events that happens in the chapter that that coincides with the entire story. Also, keep in mind that this tale is being told to us in a very unusual manner, especially episodes 2 and 3. When it came to these movies George Lucas will "finish where he begins".
