Hero

Heh, say it in China about a year ago, when it was first released there. Wonderful movie, love the use of different colors. Just wondering, was the movie that you saw in Mandarin (with subtitles) or did they dub it into English? I hate dubbed movies, they lose the spark and feel of the original.

Btw, I have no idea how Tarintino is connected with this film. I'm betting it's most likely some sort of marketing deal where the film gets more publicity (from Tarintino's fame) while Tarintino gets a little extra "reward" for associating his name with this film. ;)

Funny thing was I saw an ad for it in a Vietnamese/Chinese shop down in Georgia... I think they already had it on video/dvd.

:D

<--- Vietnamese, in case any of you didn't know and were wondering what the hell I was doing in a Vietnamese shop :)

I'm seeing it this Friday, cause this weekend was full of partaying!:xp:

Nope. (good thing too as that film sucked IMHO. )

Hero came out two years ago at least in honk kong and is a fairly arty Martial Arts film starring jet li (actually does merit some references to CTHD this time as it is arty, though i wish a few people would realise CTHD isn't the only film like that).

Very stylish cinematography and an interesting plot... though not really an action film (again, like CTHD).

It got a dvd release ages ago, and i thought it was pretty good (7.5 out of ten) when i saw it. I think it would look more spectacular on the big screen.

Originally Miramax was going to edit the film to make it more suitable for Western audiences, but Tarantino objected, so Miramax agreed but only if his name was put on the poster (making them more money). That's what I read/heard anyway.

The decision by Miramax to open the Chinese-language martial-arts saga Hero in more than 2000 theaters over the weekend paid off in spades -- or in swords, as the case may be -- as the film collected more than $18 million at the box office, nearly twice what most analysts had expected. Although the Jet Li-starrer opened to exceptional reviews, many analysts expressed doubt that it would attract a mass audience, and they also pointed out that aficionados of martial arts movies had likely obtained DVD copies of the film, which was released in Asia more than two years ago.
(from imdb.)

It is the number one film in the US this week.

I hope this success in the US promts them to give it a decent theatrical release in the UK too... it only appeared in about 3 cinemas when it came out.

People who like this sort of thing and want to check out similar stuff (which has been around for years before the matrix and CTHD came along in the US) might want to check out:

Iron Monkey - fun, slighty low budget action film with amazing end fight.

New Dragon Gate Inn - more violent version of CTHD set in an inn in a desert.

Once Upon a Time in China Trilogy - jet li historical epics with lots of wirework battles.

Wing Chun(?) - JL and Michelle Yeoh in an early story about the creators of the martial art.

Versus - (haven't seen this) modern martial arts fights.

Heroic Trio - 3 martial arts babes in michelle yeoh.

Butterfly & sword - inchomprehensible plot, highly violent, michelle yeoh, but a great alternative to CTHDs bamboo fight with it's own version ending up with everyone impaled on the broken bamboo stems. ;-)

UK distributors Hong Kong Legends (HKL) usually do much better dvds than the US versions, which are often bad transfers, terribly cut "for the us tastes".

(also check out: Drive, Hardboiled, the killer, better tomorrow, volcano high, black sheep affair, police story 1-3, rumble in the bronx, who am i?, the legend, etc...)
