You get the idea.

2 + 0 = 2

-> 20 - 2 = 18

2 + 1 = 3

3 + 0 = 3

No matter what number you pick, your answer will be a multiple of nine.

9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81

If you look at the little chart, on the page, you may notice that each time, the symbols for the numbers are changed. But!The multiples of 9 always have the same symbol. This way, no matter which combination you chose, you'll always end up with the same symbol.

Just to to prove it mathmatically that it has to be a multiple of nine...

n = your final number

D1 = 1st digit of your chosen number

D2 = 2nd digit of your chosen number

n = (10•D1 + D2) - (D1 + D2)

This is the actual forumla given to us. You multiply the first digit by 10 to place it in the tens place, then add the second digit. This is the number you chose. Then, you subtract the sum of the two digits.

n = (10•D1 + D2) - D1 - D2

Just showing this step so you can see the distrubtion of the subtraction in the second parentheses.

n = 10•D1 + D2 - 1D1

Associative property of addition lets me subtract the D sub2 from the D sub2. This, of course, cancels them out. The one is there so you can see the next step.

n = D1 • (10 - 1)

Factor out the D sub1 using the distributive property of multiplication.

n = 9•D1

So, your final number is the first digit times 9. The first digits go from 1 through 9, so you end up listing the first 9 multiples of 9. Of course, this only applies to two digits. Three digits would be every third multiple of 3 starting from 99. (I think. I'm just kicking that around in my head.)

Simple mathematics. It's just an old parlor trick, for those of you who didn't already know.

And.. for those of you would didn't see it work. Learn to add. :/

Yes, I'm bored, and I have no idea why I just wasted 10 minutes on such a simple problem.

that means you did it wrong 'cause you suck at math :p

Yeah, I probably wouldn't have cared as much to figure it out, just read the posts.

I have to say it did get me just a bit when it did it 3 times in a row :p

Sam, Bongo, SD, you all suck at math, doesnt that make you feel better :xp:

*looks at everyone who said it didn't wrok*

Jeez, I didn't know there were so many people that coudn't do simple addition. It's sorta sad really. Isn't that the kind of thing you learn in first grade? Oh, wait, dumb me. After all these years, you've forgotten. Firszt grade was a while ago, so I understand.
