Ikhnaton
the appeal of Linkin Park and other such bands (of which there seem to be an unendless supply) is completely beyond me. You could find more talent in just one of the former members of Genesis (peter gabriel, mike rutherford, phil collins, steve hackett, tony banks) than in all those bands combined. K_Kinnison
most of the teenagers today have no clue what musical talent is. It used to be people hardly ever saw you and only listen to the bands. Now with the MTV pop singles driven market, so called "music lovers" are more concerned with images and and use lyrics as an excuse when there is no other talents found My music tastes are varied and ecclectic. tho I am always going back to Queen, pink floyd, and Dave Matthew's Band

Keyan Farlander
Right now I'm listening to Billy Joel's River of Dreams album. I haven't listened to it in a while and I'd forgotten how good it is. It's too bad it was the last album of original (popular) material he released (back in 1993). Kylilin
Why is rap so looked down upon? Seriously. Yes, rap nowadays sucks, but so does pretty much all music these days. If you go into what is referred to as the "Golden Age" of rap music, you have guys like the Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, Eric B. and Rakim, KRS-ONE, Run DMC, EPMD, and a whole slew of others who invented a new type of music, a new type of poetry even. They took old music, remixed it, sampled it, and scratched it until it became something else, something it had never intended to become, that takes creativity. Writing a rhyme takes just as much skill and talent as it does to write a song, maybe even more so. It is a music that was born on the streets of the Bronx, yes, recently rap music has become tangled with popular culture, which means its been dumbed down for the masses, but rap at its purest form is music, whether you like it or not. Ikhnaton
There's nothing musical about putting words to a beat. Rap has done more harm to society than any other kind of music. It has perpetuated the objectification of women, glorification of violence in general and towards women, glorification of drugs, and most of it is just downright lewd and crude. Most of the language used in rap isn't stuff that I would say around the guys, let alone anywhere else. the fashions of the rappers and the "hoes" in the videos have turned an entire generation into thugs and skanks. Nobody seems to know how to dress anymore, or act anymore. If you listen to messages of violence, sex and drugs enough, you're going to live your life that way, and it is clearly evident in modern society. Keyan Farlander
I don't dispute that rap is music. Any organized sound is music. But it lacks nearly all aspects that music can have except for rhythm. There is nothing to admire or appreciate in its composition or execution. It's basically writing words that rhyme and saying them. I do not agree that that takes nearly as much skill as crafting melodies and harmonies. When I was 10 I wrote excellent poetry, but I could not compose a fugue for four voices that was even close to good. It takes years of study to compose music like that. And the extra effort pays immense rewards to the listener. Even writing and performing a relatively simple rock song is far more complex than rap in general. I really don't even understand how you can rise above the competition to become a rap star. It seems to me that all humans can pretty much do it as well as the next guy. Yes, I actually can rap as well as anyone who has ever done it. But I cannot write songs like John Lennon or sing like Freddie Mercury. I'm entertained by things that impress me, not things I can do myself with ease.
