About the shiny boots, I wish I could help you out there, but most of my textures that end up with the shine effects are sheer luck, or far more likely, an accident. I could attempt to tell you what I know, but it would come out as babble, although there are good photoshop tutorials out there for this stuff if I find one I'll let you know.
