toenail1 Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 Who's seen the HHGTTG movie yet? Did you like it? I heard it was fantasticular. I haven't seen it yet, and I can't think of when I'll have a chance to see it. Maybe if it's still out in theaters by the beginning of summer...

The sequences animated within the actual guide were quite hilarious: ". . .as controversial as his previous books: God's Mistakes, More of God's Mistakes, and Who is this God Person Anyway?"

Joshi Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 I Guess I'm gonna be the only thorn here then. Yeah, it was good, and for the most part stuck to the book (especially in the humour part although it wavered a bit towards the end) but... Reveal hidden contents ...first of all, the whole sub plot of zaphod losing a head to john malchovich and spending most of the rest of the movie stupider than usual wasn't great. It is true that the screenplay was written by DNA before he died, and I can respect that, but it seems that after Disney got their hands on it, they seemed to have tinkered a bit. It was all a bit too final at the end, not really as open ended as it should have been and much too much of a happy ending for a story that could quite easily have been a decent monty python sketch. The rebuilding of the world to take over just as it was destoryed was a little to convenient for it to be a true DNA experiance, as apposed to the annoyance of having to rebuild the world and start all over again. That said, the humour was funny, although as an avid fan of the series (the books) it was all a little wasted on a person like me when the jokes are exactly the same. marvin was of course brilliant and the new scene was at least fresh and funny to the avid fan but like I said before, the outcome wasn't great (Zaphod never actually got his head back in the end, they just went straight to the restaurant at the end of the universe). All in all, a decent movie for anyone who hasn't read the books. For those who have, it's still a nice movie, but was spoiled by the overly happy ending (Arthur ends up with Trillian?!). All in all, I'd suggest it to anyone, but for myself, i won't be watching it again any time soon.

Gabez Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 I loved it. Great film, great entertainment... everyone should see it, even if they haven't read the books. I heard the critics were a little divided on this, but I don't tend to follow critics anyway (I'm not a sheep like Remi is ;D) I heard Disney confirmed two sequels, but don't quote me on that...
edlib Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 I liked it, and would see it again, but I have a few small complaints, mostly the same as Joshi... I.E.: the love story and dumbing-down Zaphod. I honestly tried to watch it with a totally open mind, and not as someone who has read each of the books about 500 times, watched the BBC TV series dozens of times, and who has memorized practically every line of the radio scripts. All in all, it really could have been a LOT worse... and that's something I really feared. The books are still the greatest part of the H2G2 multiverse, however.

That is true, but the radio series was at first a nice success and people didn't really know there was going to be a sequel then (as far as I know). I suppose I'm biased because I've read the books and think the book ending is better, but it could have worked as the book had it. But I guess that's Hollywood for you (or as close to Hollywood as Disney can get).

Reveal hidden contents The restaurant is at no specific 'end' of the universe, it's infact on a planet, but it just happens to be in a time warp at the end of the universe, or basically, the last moments of the universe. In other words, you go there to witness the last moments on the universe before it all blows up and becomes nothing, and then it sort of rewinds back a few hours and you get to see it again. Zaphod et al go their by travelling forwards in time a few billion years and when you leave you go back to your own time.
