Aash Li
2001 as the best scifi movie ever? YOu have to be joking. I went and saw that in the theaters (I think, it was so long ago), and I remembered falling asleep, it was boring. The most interesting part of the movie was Hal, and even it was boring. Space Fantasy, Scifi, thats just splitting heirs. Hmm... then if the movies were that good, why does everyone I ever hear talk about the movie or write about it say that the movies sucked? Rots being the only one I hear little negative feedback on. The midichlorians, jar jar, the awful dialogues, the cheesy choreography, the bad lightsaber duals, the pedo-ishness of the whole padme and anakin thing... the plot holes of the Jar-jar Menace... Note: I dont have sources... heh.

I went and saw that in the theaters (I think, it was so long ago), and I remembered falling asleep, it was boring. The most interesting part of the movie was Hal, and even it was boring. Cinematically speaking, it is one of the greatest Sci-Fi movies ever made. Space Fantasy, Scifi, thats just splitting heirs. Not really, since Star Wars fits more along the lines of Fantasy rather than Sci-Fi. It's just because it's in space and they have robots that people say it's Sci-Fi. Therefore Space Fantasy would be a more accurate depiction of the genre Star Wars fits in. Hmm... then if the movies were that good, why does everyone I ever hear talk about the movie or write about it say that the movies sucked? Rots being the only one I hear little negative feedback on. Only people I've ever heard talk about that stuff are the rabid fanboys. Cheesy choreography, bad lightsaber duels?
ET Warrior
Cheesy choreography? That one scene where obi-wan and anakin started singing and dancing...Hayden totally looked the fool, while Ewan showed his ass up. Arguing over which is better is silly, as it's all a matter of personal taste, I'm still not even sure where I stand on the issue. At the moment, the gritty realism of Serenity totally has me, but we'll see how that stands up to the test of time. All I can say is that I really think anyone and everyone should see the movie at least once, just so they can formulate a proper opinion. It's good enough that I REALLY don't think you'll feel that you wasted your money, even if you're not that big of a fan.

Oh right, the dance number during "I'm going to be a father". God that was horrid.
Aash Li
Choreography refers to more than just dancing and signing you goofs. Dueling and sword fighting in movies requires choreography as well.
ET Warrior
Yeah, but the all of the duels were wicked bad-ass. But the 'I'm going to be a father' scene...well...I agree with you there..if it weren't for Ewan I couldn't have even watched it.
Prime
Hmm... then if the movies were that good, why does everyone I ever hear talk about the movie or write about it say that the movies sucked?Don't know. I find that most people are "meh" about Menace, favorable about Clones and loved Sith. the cheesy choreography, the bad lightsaber dualsI'm not sure why you think the duels were worse in the PT. I mean, does the Vader/Kenobi duel in SW even have choreography? And I still say the Jinn/Kenobi/Maul is the best duel in the saga... the pedo-ishness of the whole padme and anakin thing... As opposed to the incest-ishness of the whole Luke and Leia thing? Arguing over which is better is silly, as it's all a matter of personal taste And most people like various films for different reasons. What I enjoy about Star Wars is different than what I enjoy about 2001, and those things I would likely not want to see in the other.
Kryllith
Best thing I can say is go see the movie. I'd normally recommend buying/renting/borrowing the series first, but given the response I've heard from people that haven't seen the series, it doesn't appear necessary to enjoy to movie. To that end, if you do see the movie and enjoy it, watch the series then go see the movie again... Kryllith

RedHawke
I guess this is one of the times that not watching commercial television hurts you... this thread is the only place I have heard about a movie called Serenity.

REDJOHNNYMIKE
@Redhawke, have you seen the original show? @IS, Prime, ET, just look at my avitar and snap back to chick lovin reality, :Warning: vomiting is a possible side effect:D @Prime, come to think of it there was a show that wasn't very mainstream popular back in the day... what was it called?... STAR TREK and seeing as how Firefly is better than trek as well.......... About the whole VS deal, I do like the NT, but Gl's gift is giving that epic first impression to every scene, which also covers up much of the movies' immaturity in character, dialog, etc. Firefly does have some of the best visual effects out there, but they just can't match huge projects like lucas can undertake, they still turn out a fine product, but where they give the real competition is in the characters and story. Quick quiz: which lead character is the all round best, Anakin Mal ? So here's my idea, Use Gl's resources and atmo' development talents to spice up firefly, and have Whedon make SW's characters believable in the third sequel trilogy, released in a shiny box set with Firefly the second series. Boom everbody wins:D

We will have to wait and see.

I went and saw that in the theaters (I think, it was so long ago), and I remembered falling asleep, it was boring. The most interesting part of the movie was Hal, and even it was boring.... hehe....You saw it in theaters.... I assume it was a re-release, as it first hit the screens in 1968 Either that, or you're an older than I thought ! But scenes like "The Dawn of Man" the obelisk, etc, thats trippy **** w regards to Serenity(nb. I havent seen Firefly)... the Reavers seem utterly devoid of the ability to reason or think straight... how the heck can they organise themselves and maintain and pilot spacecraft etc.... Can they actually talk, did they talk in the series or do they just growl and groan, resident evil style... mtfbwya
REDJOHNNYMIKE
@Prime, even if it flops because people are to lazy to go see it, there's always games, comic books, and hardcore fans to keep it alive until it gets resurrected:D "But scenes like "The Dawn of Man" the obelisk, etc, thats trippy ****" The first time I saw that, I was overwhelmed... by how pathetic it was, it was just dumb. About the reavers, if you watch the end of the movie, You'll know why...
Aash Li
Well like I said, it was a long time ago, so I might have saw it in theaters, and I might not... it could also have been a cheap movie day where the owner shows some old movie for 50 cents or something like that... but Im pretty sure I did see it in the theaters (Im sorta old, but not *that* old). Well Ewan is cute, I can see why youd go gay for him. The only men that ever looked sexworthy were Brad and Antonio in their Vampire getup in Interview With The Vampire mtfbwya
Aash Li
blech. I have yet to see why Brad Pitt is supposedly sexy. Antonio I can see being sexy, because he is. The reavers in teh series, Im not sure, Im rewatching the series, (on episode 3). So Ill tell you later. But I think they are more like neaderthals with xyy chromosones (super aggressive), but still smart... got to remember, they arent building those ships, just flying them. And that the ships containment units on the engines are often gone, so that just tells you that they arent repairing their ships... they probly just fly them till they die from radiation or explode and die... heh
