Good GBA/ DS RPGs?

Anyone? I got Final Fantasy I & II and Tactics Ogre for Xmas last year. Wasn't too thrilled with either. I had really high hopes for Tactics Ogre because I like tactical RPGs. I just recently traded those in for Pokemon FireRed and am enjoying that, but all Pokemon games are basically the same thing so I'll end that series there. Anything with a good story? Anything with great diversity of customizability like Pokemon? Are there any good tactical RPGs out there that you have enjoyed?

Hey man, I think I know of just the exact thing you're after...

Fire Emblem and

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones are by far and away two of the best games I've ever played, both Tactical RPGs on GBA. They belong to arguably the premier Tactical RPG series around.

The Fire Emblem series is a really old Nintendo one that streches back to NES days, but these two GBA titles are the first released in the West. The storylines are deep and well written, the characters colourful. The gameplay is similar to the Advance Wars series, but each unit is a character with unique and developing stats and skills, and if you lose someone, they're gone!

As you can tell, I highly recommend them, they really are exceptionally good titles.

Yeah, I'm on Gamespot looking at all the reviews and reading the pros/ cons and that one looks good. The graphics aren't as flashy as Tactics Ogre and that's probably why I didn't ask for that. I'll definately look into those. I have a list of RPGs I might need to look into. If you guys have anything to say about them or add to the list, please do:

- Fire Emblem Series (Ever play Gladius for the consoles? How does it compare because I love that game)

- Golden Sun Series (I know it's like FF, but it had a better story. I've played a bit of the original and would love to try it for myself)

- Riviera: The Promised Land (never played it but the review says it makes up for its 'formulaic' gameplay with diversity and great story/ characters)

- Mario Bros Superstar Saga

I'll quote a few of my reviews:

for the GBA, I highly recommend the Golden Sun series in terms of 'traditional', and Sword of Mana, Shining Soul II and Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance in terms of Action.

Also, one of the best games this year is Fire Emblem Sacred Stones

A solid game is Riviera

For the DS, the only real RPG so far is Lunar Dragon Song which I don't recommend, and then there is the survival adventure Lost in Blue which is definitely better, but still flawed.

I'm playing XMen Legends II for the PSP right now, and it is pretty solid (well, too much loading and tons of 'lag').

I got to play on a GameBoy Micro today, man those things are so tiny and cool XD I say if you're gonna get or have a tonne of GBA games, get a Micro. You can put it on a keychain and have access to good gaming XD

I'm even thinking about getting one even though I already have a DS lol.

I was inspired to look into the micro, didn't realise it was released already over there.

I loved the idea, but it doesn't actually seem to be as small as i expected, not much smaller than a DS. I was expecting it to be tiny, as there was talk of putting it on keychains etc..

It's not too small, but it definately is a lot smaller than every other portable Nintendo has released and the Micro is small enough to put on a keychain and even has a lil 'thingy' that allows you to do so. And even though the screen has a smaller than previous GBA versions, it isn't too small so you can still make out text and details present in games very clearly.

In Japan the Micro was very popular, half of the units that were sold were the limited edition Famicom version but the other half that were sold were standard units so I guess collectors and people who actually wanted the device for what it was got a good deal.

Ironically the Micro isn't a gamers machine, it's more of a "Look at the cool lil gadget I have" kinda machine. XD I'm ashamed to say it but if it wasn't for the fact that I can't afford one at the moment (due to me buying a tonne of other stuff) I'd so get one just to have on a keychain even though I already have a DS. And yes I do realise how useless it really is when you already have a system capable of playing GBA games.

Oh and I really liked the way the buttons felt on the Micro, a lot better than previous GBAs and definately a lot better than the DS buttons. I hope once Nintendo releases the upgrade to the DS they go with the Micro type buttons.

EDIT: XD Forgot what I came here to talk about originally but remembered lol.

I heard Lost in Blue is pretty boring and repetative actually... x.x I was kinda interested in it too but from what I hear it's not all that great... bleah

That picture makes it look a lot smaller than another one i saw comparing it to the DS (actually that picture makes the DS look pretty huge compared to the other two).

BUt still, its bigger than my cellphone and about the same size as my camera, any i'm not sure either of those is small enough to go on a keychain...

Can't believe the DS has NO rpgs yet...

It is hard work - my post up above has links, but they don't show up underlined ...

It is not really an RPG, there is no combat, it is survival, and the way time scales in the game means you will have your life dominated by acts related to survival rather than exploring the island, which would have been more fun (IMO). But if you love games like Harvest Moon you might like it.

@ toms: XD the one I played was on a keychain lol. According to the official site the micro is "2 inches tall, 4 inches wide, 0.8 inches deep and weighs 2.8 ounces"...

@ txa: Yeah I've already looked into it a lot.

I really feel like playing some Pokemon games right now, bleah. If I had some extra cash I'd go out and buy Ruby, Sapphire, FireRead, LeafGreen or Emerald right now... maybe Pokemon XD on the GCN as well... I also wonder what Pokemon Ranger is gonna be like on the DS, I hope it's really good.
