toms
I've always been a bit of a Soul Calibur fan myself, but as SC3 seems to be a PS2 exclusive (?) and doesn't seem that great anyway I'm thinking of shifting to the rival DOA franchise... Can anyone who has tried them recommend whether I should get DOA3 or DOA Ultimate? DOA3 seems to be the sequel to DOA2 but not have much new except improved graphics, Wheras DOAU seems to be DOA2 with improved graphics... so i'm confused as to which has the best gameplay and graphics... Or is there another game i should check out on xbox or gcn?
topshot
DOAU has tons more unlockables and more modes than DOA 3. Gameplay-/Graphics-wise, I'd say they're both on par.
lukeskywalker1
I don't know toms... im thinking the PS2 is worth buying for SC3.... check out the introduction movie to see what I mean... the game is really evolving. Its keeping a lot of the SC2 stuff, with a lot of enhancements (sort of like JKA from JK2...) but the difference is SC2 was a truly amazing fighting game... one of the best, if not the best. I mean, you can create your own character... and... it has interactive cutscenes and stuff. http://gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=1558 (check the intro, if you don't mind spoiling it...) Kurgan
I haven't played the latest, but graphics wise, Soul Calibur has always been better. DOA is cartoony in comparison (basing its visual appeal more on cartoon gals in skimpy outfits). Gameplay wise, it's a matter of personal taste (at least according to previous installments). The gameplay of DOA seems very simple and boring at first (sort of like virtua fighter) but has a lot more complex stuff you can learn to make it more interesting. Soul Calibur feels a little more conventional, but that's fine, because I am more into the weapons combat anyway (DOA is more with your fists). Now let a true nerd answer more in depth. toms
The review I read of SC3 said the opening movie sucked, that they had made the fighting system more "floaty" with less "gravity" and that most of the tacked on extra modes were kind of pointless. I've read about 6 reviews for it so far and all have sounded kind of underwhealmed. Obviously its still great cos SC2 is, but it doesn't sound much of an improvement, except for the "create a fighter" thing which looks cool. But the screenshots look pants... compared to the Gamecube version of SC2 at least... so it would be a major graphical step backwards, and if it doesn't really add much to the gameplay of SC2 I don't think its worth getting a PS2 for. (Though I may crack and get one for shadow of the colossus anyway ) The more interactive environments in DOA appeal to me... thats one of the advances I was hoping they'd add to SC3 (at least until i found out it was PS2 exlusive). I thought DOAU seemed the best bet, as it was newer and had more features, but I wnted to make sure that the fact it was based on DOA2 not DOA3 didn't mean it was less refined combat-wise. Darth Groovy
Get Street Fighter II for 19.99, and use the rest of your savings to buy an extra large crispy pepperoni pizza. Seriously, as far as fighter games.....Street Fighter II is teh best ever...
Mike Windu
Ninjas are great at slapping in DOA3. If you have SC2, I don't think it'd be worth it to get SC3.

El Sitherino
DOA is boring, go ahead and get SC3. Soul Caliber's combat system has, and will always be, better.
lukeskywalker1
The reason they didn't do much to SC3's fighting system is because SC2s was great. Its so complex its not funny. As for the intro- judge it for yourself.... I was... amazed... I posted the link above... really, its really good. *looks back at gametrailers.... whoa... HD version! Must get* The new modes sound cool, but possibly rushed. I like the graphics, and remember these are good for a PS2. The GCN would naturally have better graphics. TiE23
Man, I wish I didn't sell my copy of SC2, cause I would so totally be playing it playing Talim and kicking some ass.
swphreak
Dead or Alive all the way. DOA3 is what I have now, and DOAU is just DOA3 with some new stuff and XBox Live. Go down to wherever it is you rent games and try them out.
