Armistice Day

I was gonna start a thread like this actually.

@IS: I think he means respect and remembrance in this forum.

This goes out to veterans of the past, the present, and the future:

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow

Between the crosses row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

I havent heard it called Armistace Day since I was little. Its been called Vetrans Day here in the US for years (or atleast its been called that here in Michigan).

My grandpa served in WW2, in Africa on some battleship as a medic aide... Ive always been rather proud of him.

War is bad. I agree on that.

My two great grand fathers also fought in the World Wars. Both of them fought in World War I at the Solunian Front, in the name of Serbia.

After the first World War, one of my grand fathers (from my father's side) retired because he was old. The other one (from my mother's side) fought in World War II. He sided with the Communists as a commander of one of the armies (I'm so proud of him for that).

They didn't have pretty memories to share. And I agree, War is BAD.

Here in Canada its called Remembrance Day. Its illegal to forget about it ;). My grandpa also served in WW2, I don't know where but I do know he was in the radar unit. I always heard my grandpa was crazy (I don't know if the war did that to him, his dad was also crazy), but I've never met him.

Youre proud that your great grandpa sided with the communists?

Why wouldn't he be, if it weren't for them the Nazi's would be rulers of the earth.

@IS: it's still appropriate, no matter the setting.

I just think a better way to "thank them" would be to outside enjoying the day with them and such, rather than posting a thread to avoid feeling guilty.

^^Well its raining outside, I don't like rain. Its wet.

British Columbia, Canada's rainy hell hole.

Well, it's good to remember all of these events so that they never happen again.

Anyway, I hope some Canadian network doesn't show propaganda...we have some "documentaries" about Canada's involvement in WWI and WWII...to sum them up, Germans are evil, Canada have l337 soldiers, Canada > all. Unbiased and full of real facts...

^I thought CBC always shows those documentaries. And BTW we do have l337 soldiers.

No, we had just normal soldiers. Some of those documentaries claim that germans ran in fear when they heard "Canadian soldiers are coming".

We over glorify what little army we have. Remember back during the war in Afghanistan when four Canadian soldiers were bombed by US planes? They were called heroes and everything. Jesus, I mean, it's sad that they died but they got bombed by their own allies! It's a teamkill for Christ's sake! That doesn't make you a hero!
