From planet to planet...

Ok people. I watched the 47 minute movie again, and I think I've basically figured out how hyperspace travel will work. I know bits and pieces of this have been mentioned before, but I'm just compiling it into one easily accessible post.

The hyperspace lanes that you've heard so much about are not the only ways between planets. The function of the hyperspace lanes seems to be that they will allow you to jump to planets relatively far away (kinda like in Clue where you can go from the Kitchen to the Study). The main way you will travel will basically be this: planets have large circles around them. Anything inside this circle you can jump to (depends on what planet you've got selected, but I every planet allows you to jump to at least one other, so there are none where you absolutely need hyperspace lanes). The circles are relatively small, and generally seem to contain only a few planets. Each jump you will have to make will take time (I think it's basically instant reversion, but once you revert you must then give the order to go to another planet, then another, etc... I don't know if Petroglyph will allow you to "queue" planets). This is good b/c it means you can't jump all the way across the galaxy in a second. It should also make for some good battles, as you might need to go from planet A to planet C, but you have to go through planet B, which is controlled by the enemy. The lanes are basically shortcuts, that's all they are, the circles are the main way of travel.

Well, hyperspace routes is obviously the fast way to move around, as far as you control both ends of the router. The slow way, is jumping from planet to planet; this might be accepted when things are a bit "tight" and you cannot risk more losses, yet, when you have the upper hand, i think the best way to pass across the galaxy is by opening the way through those triangled star destroyers ;)

Such is the star wars galaxy.

If you notice from this image the galaxy uses several distinct trade routes as the major pathways through the galaxy. Also like Han said, you can't just jump into hyperspace you could crash into a sun, smash into an asteroid, or get sucked into a black hole. Thus to get to planets across the galaxy you sometimes need to make several calculated jumps to get around obstacles, as shown throughout the expanded universe.

I'm glad to see that Petro is including this though, it semi bothered me about rebellion that you could jump all over the place. Thankfully there was enough of a time difference to almost make up for it so I was never really disturbed by it.

With rebellion though, only a complete fool would send a fleet from one side of the galaxy to another because the chance of travelling all that way, to be caught out when you arrive, could be a pain when your fleet gets destroyed!

The Galactic Map does interest the hell out of me. I intend to have a superb guide online, once we get the information about it

Good Idea because I am as well curious about how they would do the galactic map travel. What if you would have to capture one of the outerplanets that would be a long way to go and easily be caught likely, what would be the nessesary way they would get you from one end to the other like from coruscant to dagobah(a way without any planets blocking your way).

You have it right with the circles and hyperlanes but the lanes are also used to connect richer planets(the ones you want to capture) so having easy attack routes will make it harder to defend but easier to attack. also note that there is one of these routes between Naboo and Tatooine wich are practicly huging each other so I dont know why they even bothered.
